Frilly Floral

Loft Floral Tiered Dress & Ann Taylor Gretel Suede Slides

I rarely buy anything online without a discount — even if that means putting a beloved piece on the back burner until a promotional code lands in my inbox. And, while I’m usually on top of checking for discounts, sometimes those emails do go overlooked.  (It’s easy to miss the good stuff when we’re all getting hundreds of emails a day!) Fortunately, there’s a company called Wikibuy that’s making the process of saving money on your purchases even easier. Wikibuy offers a three-prong approach to saving individuals money. There’s a Chrome extension that finds lower prices from other sellers while you shop on Amazon and will also check to see where else the product is being sold and shows the price (including tax, shipping and minus any coupons that apply) for each of those locations. You can also search the site for products, which will show you all the places the item is being sold and what your cost would be on that site. Lastly, the extension will also test coupon codes automatically at checkout and will find online rebates from participating retailers.

When Wikibuy reached out to me a couple of weeks ago asking if I’d like to collaborate, I jumped at the chance to try their site. I challenged myself to find a discount for the LOFT dress I had been crushing on for a few weeks. Not only did Wikibuy alert me when the dress had a $25 discount, it also found a code for free shipping off of a $50 order. (Much better than LOFT’s standard $125 minimum for free shipping, which just means I buy extra sizes and “ride-along items” to return later.) It’s definitely worth giving it a shot if you’re an avid online shopper like myself! And if you’re in the market for an easy, summer-to-fall dress that you can wear on weekends and to the office: this is it. It’s such a fun little dress to wear!

Weekend Reading

Weekend-Reading

Between white supremacists marching in Charlottesville where Heather Heyer tragically lost her life, Trump’s complete and utter incompetency, and an horrific terrorist attack in Barcelona, this has been a pretty shitty week. Sometimes I feel superficial by glossing over current events on the blog. There are a lot of beautiful things in the world that I’d much rather talk about. However, that’s getting more and more difficult. Here’s to a weekend of love, acceptance, and healing.

Weekend Reading:

  • The solar eclipse is this Monday! Here are tips on photographing it with your phone.
  • Jenny shared great tips for first-time home buyers.
  • Exploring the differences in work demands for people without children. I work in very flexible workplace and am allowed to leave early for personal reasons if need be. However, it’s a lot easier for someone with children to fall back on kids as an excuse without it being questioned by anyone.
  • We’re going to Milwaukee today to pick up our new nightstands. (We saved around $60 on shipping to have them sent to the store for pick up and I was able to use an in-store discount when we ordered them.) I love the mid-century design, but I’d like to give them more personality by switching out the drawer pulls. I’m going to go with either this or this.
  • Cathy shares her tips on growing your Instagram following. (I actually started using Planoly for Curated Couple and I love it!)
  • This pleated ombre skirt is so fun! Wear it with a camel-colored sweater and neutral heels to let the skirt really stand out.
  • Cookie Monster is coming out with a cookbook and it sounds pretty adorable!
  • I’ve been following interior design Instagram accounts for inspiration in our house. Here are 25 to follow. Then, check out these five for actually purchasing home finds.
  • Prada and Miu Miu’s fuzzy hats are all kinds of amazing and fashion editors agree.
  • Why catalogs still survive in the digital age.

Five Under $50:

  • I ordered a few things from Target to try on this week. It’s all going back except for this unexpected win: a glen plaid bomber jacket.
  • An oversize pair of Lucite earrings make a major statement.
  • A dark floral cami with flirty ruffles.
  • A classic bag in faux leather.
  • The mixed prints on this romper are gorgeous! It’s 60% off for a limited time with code SUMMER60.

Earlier This Week:

  • The Kate Spade dress I’ll be wearing every week this fall.
  • I’m crazy about the blue heels in this week’s “The Coveted.” They also come in navy velvet, which are just as gorgeous.
  • I went down memory road with my sartorial purchases to figure out what pieces eventually landed in the donation pile. Hopefully this approach helps me save money in the future.
  • My new sandals! They took zero time to break in! (Snag ’em here. I want the black ones next.)

Use Your Past Purchases to Stop Making Shopping Mistakes

August 17, 2017 by jessica 5 Comments

red carpet dresses

As I was reorganizing my closet the other day, I was struck by how many pieces I own that I don’t actually wear. Some I still like and will reach for occasionally, some are things I never wore again after their debuts, and others don’t fit and are taking up space until I lose those next ten pounds. If I’m being honest, my closet is a space that isn’t making me joyful and that’s because of the amount of stuff I have to sift through every morning. That got me thinking about the last two years of purchases. As you know, I keep a Pinterest board to record the majority of my sartorial additions each year (see the 2015, 2016, and 2017 boards). This allowed me the opportunity to walk down my shopping memory lane to see what things I still wore, what became wardrobe staples, and which pieces were a waste of money. Hopefully evaluating my own shopping mistakes will inspire you to make sure your money is well spent on pieces you’ll truly love and want to wear.

For this exercise, I only looked at 2015 and 2016 purchases. I’m mostly interested to see what sticks around in the long run. I put together a collage of nine items from the last two years that I don’t wear anymore or have already gotten rid of. Here’s where we’re at:

How to Learn from Your Shopping Mistakes (And Wins!)

This isn’t exhaustive, but it’s close. It’s interesting to see these unworn pieces together — especially because I was really excited about each of them at one point — and perhaps a little disheartening to realize how much money was wasted! But that’s the point of this. I want to figure out what characteristics eventually lead to the donation pile so that I can cut down on wasteful spending:

  • Impulse purchases.
  • Inexpensive pieces from fast-fashion retailers.
  • Questionable quality.
  • Shorts. (I love how shorts look on other people and I used to wear them all the time when I was slimmer, but they just don’t work for me now.)
  • Didn’t fit well in the first place.
  • FOMO on pieces that looked cute on other bloggers, but didn’t work for me.
  • They don’t really seem to fit with my style.

I then picked nine of my most often worn items purchased in 2015 and 2016:

How to Learn from Your Shopping Mistakes (And Wins!)

These are some of pieces that are in heavy rotation in my wardrobe. That dark floral dress (worn above) is something I grab just about every week and always makes me feel cute even on bad days. I yearn for fall just to wear that Tory Burch windowpane coat. The pink dress makes me feel bubbly whenever I slip it on. The little black dress is perfect for work events because it has pockets. And the Rebecca Minkoff white quilted bag is the perfect size for daily use. (It’s actually on its last legs because of how much I use it!) I can point to individual reasons about why these are all amazing for my lifestyle, but what do they have in common and how will that help future purchases?

  • I prefer a-line styles that are forgiving across my hips.
  • Classic cuts work best for me.
  • I love dresses more than separates.
  • I’m always going to wear flats more often than heels.
  • These are all purchases that I put thought into before pulling the trigger.
  • I’m more likely to fall in love with a designer piece and keep it in rotation, but I’ll embrace an affordable find if the quality is there.
  • Everything was flattering right away.
  • I actually wear prints quite often. It’s not well represented with these nine, but good prints are always a win with me.

I think it’s important to go through some sort of sartorial evaluation to help guide your future purchases. I have such a crush on this Gucci bag and actually pulling the trigger on something that expensive is a little scary! However, knowing how much use I already get out of my white quilted purse means that upgrading to a nice one is a smart decision.

What kind of shopping mistakes have you made? How have they informed future purchases?

It also inadvertently became the weekend I made Dave eat a cheeseburger every day, between @redhotranchchicago, @eatmottst, and @smallcheval. There are worst ways to spend a weekend.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.
