The Weekend Guide 08.05.16

KNOW
The Zika virus has officially hit Florida and now the state must brace for the impact on its tourism industry.

PEEK
I loved going to the fabric store with my mom when I was young, and spent most of the time pouring over the vast array of possibilities in the McCall pattern book. (It was one of my motivations to learn how to sew!) Here’s a peek into the the company.

LEARN
Manu Atelier’s bags are quickly rising to It bag status. Learn more about the Turkish designer here and then shop the bags here. I’m crazy about this blue suede fringe number that’s sold out. Fingers crossed that it gets restocked!

LUST
How amazing are these?! However, I have no place to wear them — and no closet space for something so impractical! This tempting fur bag would get a lot more use.

DECORATE
Making your home look expensive doesn’t have to break the bank.

SIP
Booze and Greek yogurt? I’m in breakfast cocktail heaven!

EARLIER THIS WEEK
Got sporty with Stan Smith sneakers and a jersey dress.
Coveted the best late-summer pieces.
Enjoyed the sweetest subscription box yet.
Bought this dress. It looks so good with these.

A monthly chocolate delivery? Yes, please!

Chococurb Nano Review, Plus Coupon Code

If there’s one way to a girl’s heart, it’s through the sweetest subscription box yet: Chococurb. As you may suspect, Chococurb is a monthly chocolate delivery featuring a selection of gourmet chocolates from around the world. You can choose from a full-size box with five to seven treats for $35 per month, a mini box with three selections for $20, or the nano box with sample-size pieces for just $10. As with most subscription boxes, you’ll save money by signing up for multiple months at once.

I was delighted to get my chocolate fix with Chococurb’s nano box in July. The box arrived inside a small Styrofoam cooler with an ice pack to protect the chocolate from the summer heat. (Sidebar: I’m not terribly keen on Styrofoam for environmental reasons, but Madison does have a recycling program for the product and, if we’re being honest, chocolate is a hard product to mail without an insulation.) Nestled inside were four small samples of different brands of chocolate and one full bar. Selections change each month and while this box was comprised of all milk chocolate pieces, they varied in flavors and places of origin. There was a chocolate-covered cake batter candy from Seattle, one infused with coffee from the Bay Area, and yet another with ginger from Belgium (an especially fun surprise given that I had purchased Dolfin chocolate when I was in Brussels a couple of years ago). My favorite was a decadent bar of milk chocolate with a hint of vanilla from Madagascar.

I’ve been a hard one to impress when it comes to subscription boxes, but I’m totally on board with Chococurb. It’s a great way to try different high-quality chocolate brands at a relatively low investment of $10 per month. Heck, you would probably spend that much on two venti drinks from Starbucks in a month, and I promise that chocolate is more satisfying! And if you’re craving more, visit their blog for all things chocolate.

Save 10% off orders through Sept. 4, 2016 with code BEDKNOBS.

After wearing a pair of sneakers with a dress for the first time in over a year, my love of comfortable footwear has been rekindled. While  I’ve only worn them with short hemlines so far, I’m crazy about the look above. White sneakers from the Michael Kors shoes collection give a jumpsuit an unexpected edge that’s destined for street style stardom, especially when you add the texture of the Kayu tote bag.

There’s more to love:

Feeling Sporty

Bailey Blue Shifty Shift Dress

We had planned to go to Milwaukee on Saturday to visit West Elm and try out a Casper mattress before ordering one in the coming weeks. (We’re finally upgrading from our old, uncomfortable queen to a king-size bed!) On a whim, we checked Priceline right before we left and found a room at the historic Pfister hotel for a fraction of the price. We couldn’t pass it up and decided to spend the night in the city, giving us plenty of time to explore antique stores, go to German Fest, and take a boat tour of the city’s rivers and Lake Michigan.

I’ve gotten pretty good at packing for a last-minute excursion, but this dress from Bailey Blue has made it so much easier. It’s an incredibly soft jersey material that feels like a well-loved vintage t-shirt. It was the perfect thing to wear to beat the summer heat while staying comfortable, especially when paired with my new Stan Smith sneakers. (Street style stardom, here I come!) If you haven’t yet heard of Bailey Blue, it’s definitely worth checking out for its selection of breezy summer dresses and rompers at reasonable prices. They also have a selection of plus-size styles. Everything is in junior’s sizing, so be sure to size up.

Michelle Obama’s dress at the Democratic National Convention may have been understated, but her choice to feature American designer Christian Siriano may have hinted at a political statement.

Combining cucumbers and peaches doesn’t seem like a winning flavor profile, but this summer salad actually sounds amazing.

JetBlue just announced flights from Florida to Cuba for just $99 each way, making travel to the country more enticing than ever. Your trip still has to fall under one of the 12 approved categories for obtaining a visa. I wonder if blogging falls under “journalistic activity.” Worth a shot?

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
