In the Bag: Europe Edition

March 21, 2016 by jessica 22 Comments

Inside My Bag: Packing for Europe

I’m not feeling particularly prepared for our upcoming trip to Denmark and Belgium. I still have daily itineraries to complete and a packing list to compile, but I do have one thing ready: the contents of my everyday purse while we’re abroad. While I try to pare down to just the essentials, it doesn’t always work out. We rarely stop back at the hotel during the day and I’d hate to find myself without a creature comfort like hand cream or Band-Aids for blisters. Fortunately, the Tory Burch bag I purchased earlier this year (worn here) is spacious enough for just about everything (excluding the case for my sunglasses).

  • iPhone (not pictured)
  • Camera (not pictured)
  • Passport and cover (love this one)
  • Journal and pen for jotting down observations, recording what we did each day, and storing reciepts
  • A deck of cards or a set of dice for playing Farkle
  • Card case for my credit cards (similar)
  • Coin purse (mine is an old one from Coach similar to this)
  • Sunglasses
  • Herban Essentials towelettes for cleaning my hands or sanitizing surfaces on the plane
  • Band-Aids
  • Hand cream
  • Lipstick (a long-wear lipstick and one that’s easier to apply on the go)
  • Mirror (mine is by Lauren Merkin and her shop has since closed; here’s a budget-friendly option)
  • Brush and hair ties (not pictured)
  • Tissues (not pictured)
  • Inhaler (not pictured)
  • Reusable shopping bag for the grocery store (not pictured, but I purchased this cute Kate Spade one)
  • Container with allergy pills and pain medication (These containers are also great for packing tiny items like earrings or bringing just a dab of a special face cream or exfoliator that you don’t use every day. There’s a larger version that’s perfect for packing dry snacks for the plane. I bring almonds to avoid any hangry outbursts.)

JezebelLondon-1

Jezebel London has reimagined classic diamond jewelry for edgy, everyday wear. Each piece of the urban collection is designed by the team in London with versatility in mind. Not only can every piece be worn seamlessly from day to night, many of the pieces are thoughtfully created to give the wearer a chance to express her personality when she gets dressed in the morning. There are dangling earring backs to jazz up a pair of studs and rings that can be worn as a midi or on your little finger. The pieces are produced in Istanbul with 14k rose gold and diamonds of various colors. Read on to learn more about the women behind the brand, Yasmin and Tumay, below!

When I received a sale alert yesterday from Lele Sadoughi, I couldn’t help but to purchase the Maraca pendant I’ve had my eye on for a year! Madewell Gingham Dress, Redux

March 16, 2016 by jessica 5 Comments

Madewell Gingham Dress

This dress is definitely growing on me. I wore it for the second time last weekend (here’s the first round) for a rainy Sunday of visiting open houses (including the prettiest home from the late 1800s that we would have considered if it wasn’t so far away from Madison). The weather was terrible and only one photo made the cut, but sometimes that’s all you need!

Dress: Madewell “Courier” Buffalo Check Shirtdress (also here and here)
Jacket: Target
Purse: Rebecca Minkoff “Mini Affair” (the blue one is half price)
Shoes: Louise et Cie (similar)
Sunglasses: Karen Walker “Number One”
Rings: Monica Vinader, c/o Julie Vos
Lips: Stila “Betsey”
Nails: YSL “Day Bloomer”

It also inadvertently became the weekend I made Dave eat a cheeseburger every day, between @redhotranchchicago, @eatmottst, and @smallcheval. There are worst ways to spend a weekend.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.
