Caped

October 19, 2015 by jessica 34 Comments

Caped-2

My shopping M.O. usually comes down to “if Blair wore it, I probably won’t look good in it,” but I couldn’t resist at least trying DKNY’s “Blythe” hooded cape that made a reappearance this season after quickly selling out last winter. As you may recall, I struck out with J.Crew’s cape in September. I hated the color in person and I couldn’t really justify outerwear that restricted my ability to drive. This cape, on the other hand, is perfect. It’s kind of a stadium blanket-coat hybrid that’s amazingly cozy with a thick wool-blend fabric. Openings on each side allow for ample movement, while snaps give the illusion of sleeves. I wore it out for the day on Sunday (more house hunting!) and was actually a little too warm when the temperature reached the mid-50s, which is reassuring since I plan to get as much use out of it as possible until the first snowfall. Prices on the cape vary wildly. 6pm.com has the black version available for $90, while Nordstrom has both black and grey available for $158. Zappos and Bloomingdale’s are significantly more expensive at $240 and $354, respectively.

The Weekend Guide

LEARN
In an increasingly digital — and photo heavy — age, there’s immense pressure to always work our best angles. There’s nothing wrong with that, as Garance Doré points out, but there’s also more to life.

DAYDREAM
We’re starting to look at houses, which is as nerve-wracking and intimidating as it is exciting! We actually found a small ’50s home that had been completely renovated. I’m crazy about it, but it doesn’t have a place to eat, aside from a tiny “eat-in kitchen” area that wouldn’t fit four adults. And, it really bothers me. It’s also $50,000 over what I wanted to spend. In the meantime, I’m stashing money away for the big day and daydreaming about home decor. I’m loving this inspiration post.

STEP
The New York Times goes inside the mind of Karl Lagerfeld.

SHAKE
Classic cocktails are long overdue for a comeback. Toss four ingredients into a shaker this weekend and take flight with an aviation.

SAVE
Loeffler Randall’s Friends & Family Sale is in full force (use code SQUADGOALS). I’ve wanted these star-studded sandals for years. Silver is the only color remaining in my size and I had my heart set on gold, so we’ll see if these finally make their way to my closet.

SWOON
This three-year-old will put your Halloween costume to shame. (She should find a Choupette lookalike and go as Karl next year.)

NOTABLE SALES
20% off full-price clothing at Anthropologie.
25% off at Kate Spade’s Friends & Family sale. (A fox hat is a reasonable purchase, right?)
Saks Fifth Avenue is offering 25% off most items and 20% off jewelry.

FIVE UNDER $55

EARLIER THIS WEEK
I’ve worn a windowpane mini dress on repeat. (Seriously, three times this week…)
This post skewed a bit Alice in Wonderland, but I like it.
A necklace that’s as versatile as a LBD.
Couldn’t pass up an opportunity to snap a photo on a cute floor.

The Best Jewelry from the Shopbop Sale

Shopbop’s Friends & Family sale wraps up today with code INTHEFAM25. Don’t miss your chance to save 25% on favorites like Karen Walker sunglasses or the rhinestone beauties above. I couldn’t resist snagging the star ear climbers from the Jem and the Holograms collection at Shopbop. They’re just $22.50 after the discount and an incredibly fun way to pay homage to one of my favorite childhood cartoons.* (Although, I think I’ll skip the movie.) I also picked up this “darling” jewelry tray for my dresser.

*We had to draw self-portraits in preschool and I insisted on giving myself Jem’s signature pink hair. My teacher stifled my creativity and tersely told me that I had brown hair, not pink. I also recall her telling my parents about my irreverent ways when I was picked up that day. I still haven’t forgiven her.

Customize Your Jewelry With Stella & Dot

Many of us have no problem shelling out big bucks on wardrobe staples like the ubiquitous little black dress because it can be worn with different accessories and for countless occasions. Versatility makes it worth the splurge. However, we rarely have that mentality when it comes to jewelry. There’s either subtle everyday pieces or the statement-makers that make infrequent appearances. That doesn’t have to be the case. Stella & Dot’s Versatility Shop boasts nearly 100 items that can be worn multiple ways, making costume jewelry just as versatile as your LBD.

I was recently given the opportunity to review a piece from the collection and chose the Aida Tassel Necklace. The geometric design is inspired by the architecture of Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar and crafted with an antique gold finish. But, as you’ll see below, its versatility is most appealing. Along with the tassel, each “fan” is removable to allow you to change the length of the pendant. I prefer the longest setting with three links and the opulent tassel (obviously), but you could go to the opposite end of the spectrum and pull all of the embellishments off. Without the pendant, the collar necklace adds a sleek hint of gold for a minimalist ensemble.

The Coveted

October 13, 2015 by jessica 12 Comments

CurrentlyCoveting-13October2015

This look is definitely more Alice in Wonderland than I prefer, but I had to put together this week’s “The Coveted” with that whimsical clutch in mind! Here’s what caught my eye this week:

  • A sweater with a removable bejeweled collar. (Wear it with the rest of your sweaters when this one is at the dry cleaner.)
  • Little rhinestone kisses. It’s a subtle touch of glam for the holiday season, a flirty hint at a New Year’s Eve kiss, and a Valentine’s Day must.
  • A rich red pout.
  • An evening bag that’s equal amounts glitzy and goofy. Basically, the perfect conversation piece.
  • This mod mini skirt. At first blush, it looks like the white portion is just a curved design, but if you take a peek at the stock image, you’ll see that it’s actually a heart. On the more affordable side of things, this mini comes in at $54 and still has a bold black and white design.
  • A modern update to the classic Mary Jane pump. While not as elegant, these have a similar design with the asymmetrical strap.
  • This playful pillow. Jonathan Adler’s Friends & Family sale runs through the end of today (save 20% with code FRIENDS2015). It’s the perfect time to stock up on holiday gifts like gold zebra dishes, chic cocktail glasses, and colorful vases.
  • Also! There’s 25% off at Shopbop through Oct. 15 with code INTHEFAM25. It doesn’t apply to Tory Burch or Ferragamo (or a few other brands), which is pretty lame. I need to rein in my spending, but I’m still considering this “creme de la creme” tray.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
