Weekend Links 02.10.18

Happy Saturday! This weekend we have a post-holiday gathering with Dave’s family, I get to pretend I’m Nina García as a judge for this event (and yesterday I realized I actually have to talk to introduce myself to the crowd — ugh, I have the worst anxiety about public speaking of any kind), and I’m going to get to work on more painting. Speaking of which, I’m going to incorporate more home posts into my content over here. I was trying to keep everything house-related on Curated Couple, and I still plan to keep that as a diary of our house updates, but the house is so ingrained into what I do each weekend that it feels weird to completely cut out a large part of my life. So, think of those posts as the “Bedknobs” portion of my blog title! I’ll still keep the emphasis on style, of course, but I’ll pepper in some of the fun home content and things we’re working on.

Weekend Links:

  • McDonald’s is giving away a “Bling Mac” ring worth $12,500.
  • Nine sheet mask reviews.
  • Erin’s design-focused guide to Portland makes me want to book a trip immediately.
  • Dave found this Etsy shop yesterday. To say that I’m obsessed with their light fixtures would be an understatement. I’m going to measure to see if this would fit at the top of our stairs.
  • Since I’m obviously a Gucci fan girl, I enjoyed this old article about how the brand embraced their logo despite the popularity of minimalism and logo-less designs.
  • Add panache to your cocktails with homemade maraschino cherries. It looks so easy and probably tastes a lot better than the bright red, overly candied version at the grocery store.
  • The inspiration behind Tory Burch’s carnation-filled runway.
  • Maayan Zilberman turns making candy into an art form.
  • How to know if your stylish home investment will be considered dated or classic.
  • Wow your sweetheart this Valentine’s Day with a meal of French bistro classics.

Finds Under $50:

  • Sophisticated champagne coupes to elevate your bar.
  • A sweet sundress to tuck away until spring.
  • Earrings that look like ribbons: here, here, and here.
  • Love the springtime stripes of this sweater, but the traditional navy and white version is great, too!
  • A sassy notepad for your desk.
  • Micropleats add interest to this top.
  • Oversize earrings for $14 is a great deal!

Earlier This Week:

  • I made the biggest sartorial splurge of my life. (I’ll do a post next week about what actually fits inside. I had a few people ask about that after I posted the bag on Instagram Stories, so I figured I’d show everyone in case it’s on your wish list, too.)
  • Valentine gift ideas for her (you?) and him.
  • At the end of 2017, I realized that I missed the little round ups I used to post that recounted some of the previous month’s snapshots. So, I’m bringing that back. Some are images that made it to Instagram, others are just fun things on my phone.

Weekend Links 02.02.18

Today marks seven years that Dave and I have been together! We’re heading to Milwaukee this weekend for a little getaway to mark the occasion where we’ll be hunting for vintage furniture, scouring record stores to add to our vinyl collection, wandering around the Third Ward, experiencing the ice bars, and meeting up with friends at Mitten Fest. In other news, we booked a trip to Austin for my 35th birthday at the end of May! If you have any recommendations, let me know!

Weekend Links:

  • Over five years, a waiter collected 8,000 origami sculptures left by customers.
  • What you need to know when buying furniture.
  • Ten anniversaries worth traveling for.
  • How cute is this planter?
  • All of the 2018 Super Bowl ads that have been released thus far.
  • Thoughts on how to save shopping malls.
  • Does data science work when it comes to dating?
  • Try these breathing techniques the next time you’re feeling overwhelmed.
  • The science of swearing.
  • There’s a ceiling fan at the top of our stairs and it’s pretty much the stupidest place for one. We’re likely going to replace it with this beauty.
  • Menswear revenue is expected to outpace the womenswear market.

Finds Under $50:

  • Vintage-inspired glasses to update your home bar.
  • A sweet gingham dress.
  • Pick your favorite shade of Pantone’s Color of the Year for your next manicure.
  • A romantic and flattering wrap dress.
  • A pair of geometric statement earrings.

Earlier This Week:

  • Reflecting on a month of [almost] no shopping.
  • The sunglasses in this week’s “The Coveted” are ridiculous in a really fun way, and they’re only $16.
  • I lost four followers on Bloglovin’ after posting this outfit. Meh. I like the top! 😉
  • I can’t resist a selfie when there’s a sunburst mirror around.
  • This is why I can’t always hate on winter in Wisconsin.

Weekend Reading 12.09.17

We had our first measurable snowfall last night! It’s not much — maybe an inch at most — but it makes everything feel so much more festive. It’s good timing, too, since we’re off to central Wisconsin today for our first Christmas gathering of the season. We weren’t sure if we were going to make it to this family get together, so I put off buying the required $20 women’s gift and $30 men’s gift for the gift exchange until yesterday. Nothing like waiting until the last minute, huh? Those inexpensive gifts are so difficult when you’re not buying for a specific person, which is why I have a gift guide coming next week with low cost gifts for those types of exchanges. Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Weekend Reading:

  • Iris. Apfel. Cocktail. Napkins.
  • How to clean and take care of your glittery garments.
  • I’m in love with the new branding for Chobani.
  • Six tips for throwing an unforgettable holiday party.
  • This feminine top is so pretty.
  • A behind the scenes peek into creating the Museum of Ice Cream.
  • I’m not on board with Pantone’s Color of the Year.
  • We finally had reservations at The Publican in Chicago last weekend, and I can’t stop daydreaming about the barbecue carrots. I know it sounds kind of lame, but it’s amazing. I found the recipe here and I can’t wait to try it myself.
  • You can get a bar cart in time for the holidays for just $90!
  • These DIY wall hooks won’t work in our 1929 house, but they’re really cute if you have a mid-century home!

Five Under $50:

  • A playful bow detail keeps this striped top from being too basic. (Take 30% off today with code HOLIDAYFUN.)
  • Major statement earrings that won’t break the bank. (Use code GIFT25 to take 25% off.)
  • All of these faux fur scarves are just $20 today only! It’s the easiest to elevate your winter look and add some fun to your coat!
  • A set of four notebooks with illustrations by Donald Robertson are a great gift for the fashion lover on your shopping list.
  • This dress is incredibly impractical for winter, but it’s cute enough to buy now for spring!

Earlier This Week:

  • Gifts for the cook. (I can’t recommend those dish towels enough. I own five and have pretty much stopped using the other kitchen towels we have.)
  • My new winter boots are a rare combination of cute and practical.
  • Snapshots from our weekend in Chicago: this year’s Tiffany’s window, the Chicago River, lights at Jayson Home, and a festive nutcracker.

New Orleans | Bedknobs & Baubles

Dave is forever catching me in the act of snapping Instagram photos on my phone! I was looking back at our travel photos from our March trip to New Orleans (the last vacation we’ve been on — I’m itching for something soon!) and laughed at the “behind the scenes” look at this Instagram. We found cheap tickets this fall to NOLA, but it’d be too soon to go back, right? In any case, daydreaming about another adventure is a nice escape from the crazy busy days I’ll have over the next week. Expect me to be just as quiet for another week, but then I’m anxious to start posting again. I have a lot of ideas in the works!

Weekend Reading:

  • It’s Kate Spade Friends & Family time! Take 30% off your purchase with code FRIEND through Sunday, Oct. 15. I usually use this as an opportunity to buy my annual day planner (very old fashioned of me).  I’m also crazy about these boots. They’d be so good with black tights and a short wool dress. These striped loafers are also pretty great, as is this striped peacoat.
  • Processed food gets an unfair bad rap.
  • The Erdem x H&M collaboration looks dreamy!
  • I came across Lauren Williams’ work last week and I just love her bohemian-inspired wall hangings. I’m also all about the velvet lumbar pillow. What a great way to add texture to your bedroom.
  • The holidays are going to sneak up on us this year like they always do! I’ve been doing some early planning by picking cookie recipes (chocolate peppermint crinkle cookies are always a hit), and thinking about decorating our house (love these modern glass trees!).
  • Seven ways to add hygge to your home this fall.
  • How cute are these bow-topped kitten heels? (The black pair is the best.)
  • A museum dedicated to the art of forgery.
  • How Jennifer Fisher packs her jewelry when she travels.
  • Have you seen this awful hack for making peanut butter sandwiches? It has to be a joke, right?
  • I’m not one to wear high heels very often, which you know. But these? I want to wear them with opaque tights and all of my fall/winter dresses! (I keep opening a tab to stare dreamily at them, which means they’ll be on their way to me shortly to at least try in person.)

Five Under $50

  • A sleek shoulder bag. I love the plum option.
  • I can’t get over how much I love the colors and print of this silk scarf.
  • Graphic gold earrings are a statement you can wear with just about everything this season.
  • This smocked halter top is perfect to dress up for the holidays with cigarette pants or wear tucked into bell bottom jeans.
  • I’m not really a sneaker girl, but I’m loving this velvet slip-on pair!

Earlier This Week:

  • Missed out on under $400 tickets to Iceland, since I had to ask permission for PTO. Hoping the low price comes back soon!
  • National Handbag Day is a thing.
  • What we’ve been up to lately. (Spoiler: buying a lot of things for the house.)

Weekend Reading 06.23.17

Nope, not sick of this bag yet!

What a week! On Tuesday, we closed on our house. It was actually kind of anticlimactic to receive the keys after signing off on all of the paperwork. I think I was expecting to feel intensely elated and while I was certainly happy, I was mostly just ready to move on with it and start working! We’ve made some pretty impressive progress for the first week (after we were able to actually get into the house — some of our keys don’t work and there’s a trick to opening the front door). We removed the kitchen cabinets in the upstairs bedroom from when the house was converted into two apartments, pulled out remaining carpet, removed carpet finishing staples in the staircase, primed and painted the wood part on the front of the house (scroll over to see the original), and primed the railing and column on the front porch. We’ve been working for a few hours on the house after work every day and would like to finish those outside projects today so that we can start painting inside before our floors are refinished in two weeks. And I wish I could say that the walls and floors were all we needed to do in this house. There are a lot of projects that I’ll be documenting over on Curated Couple (and the blog once I have time to sit down, pretty it up, and add content). It won’t be the most glamorous Instagram feed, but I really wanted it as a way to document our progress and our mini successes. In more exciting house news, I ordered this jewelry cabinet for my closet. ::heart-eyes:: It arrives on Tuesday and while it’ll sit in its box in the kitchen until the floors are done, I can’t wait to start seeing the place come together.

WEEKEND READING:

  • We’re a long way off from hosting parties at our house, but I just love this flamingo ring toss game! I’d love to spray  paint them gold instead.
  • Why has the statement earring grown in popularity?
  • Take an extra 30% off sale items at Tory Burch with code EXTRA30. Obviously I have no money now, but if I did, I’d spring for these shoulder-dusting earrings.
  • Start planning your Fourth of July menu. I’m all about corn salad.
  • Photography tips for shooting in crowded places.
  • Skittles gave up their rainbow colors for a limited time.
  • It’s not often I fall in love with something from LOFT, but this has captured my fancy (and soon, my money).
  • The story behind the world’s largest watercolor painting.
  • The best U.S. cities for an affordable getaway.
  • Disney has the best paint color for camouflaging unsightly things on their properties.

FIVE UNDER $50:

  • An unexpected bow detail in back makes this striped tank a favorite of the summer.
  • How great are these raffia tassel earrings? They’re a steal at just $10.
  • I love the look of this dress, but Old Navy is always hit or miss for me (and usually a miss). Has anyone tried it?
  • This vintage-inspired bag is too cute.
  • Update your pajama drawer with this charming set.

ICYMI:

  • We bought a house!
  • I finally wore the jumpsuit I bought last November.
  • Rounding up the best woven bags under $100.

It also inadvertently became the weekend I made Dave eat a cheeseburger every day, between @redhotranchchicago, @eatmottst, and @smallcheval. There are worst ways to spend a weekend.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.
