June Highlights

July 8, 2015 by jessica 10 Comments

June2015

Let’s just start by admitting that June wasn’t nearly as fun as May. My broken foot left me a little too gun shy to use crutches at the beginning and even when I was finally feeling more confident, I didn’t want to scoot around too much. It was exhausting! Here’s what I did manage to do:

  • Whine about my broken foot. Here’s what I learned during the experience.
  • Enjoyed beer and frites at my favorite restaurant in Madison.
  • Introduced Bacon to our new rug. Let’s just hope he doesn’t use it as an expensive scratching pad. (Truth be told, I hated this rug online, but fell in love with it in the store. The colors are much prettier in person.)
  • Enjoyed time at the pool, even if I didn’t go in. Instead, I sunned myself and made it through Girl on the Train. It’s similar to Gone Girl with an unreliable narrator, but not as good.
  • Bought a new Tory Burch dress because I can’t resist a good sale or a dress with pockets. It’s still available in different sizes at varying price points at Tory Burch, Bloomingdale’s, and Saks.
  • Received this gorgeous necklace as a birthday gift from Dave.
  • Ordered new sunglasses that I’ve been wearing nonstop.
  • Picked up Sunday donuts at Madison’s best bakery.
  • Finally wore my favorite bathing suit. It’s from LOFT last year, but I’m also loving this flattering striped suit and the batik stripes on this one. This year’s version of my LOFT swimsuit comes in an array of solid colors.

May Highlights

May2015

I haven’t done a monthly recap post in awhile and I miss it. It’s such a nice reminder of the mini moments that made the month more fun–especially when I’m in need of a dose of optimism! This broken foot is starting to wear on my spirits. May is actually my favorite month. The weather hints at warmer temperatures, sundresses are a reality, and it’s an excuse to travel somewhere to celebrate my birthday. Here are just a few of the things that made me happiest last month:

  • Blossoming trees.
  • A gold ceramic tortoise box. I love this thing and it was only $15 at Target. I use it to hide my inhaler on the coffee table.
  • An indulgent brunch in Cincinnati at Krueger’s Tavern. The cocktails were incredible.
  • Trying out Rocksbox for the first time. I’m not usually a fan of subscription boxes, but this jewelry rental service is pretty fun. It’s a nice way to try new styles or designers without the investment. You can try your first box for free with code bedknobsandbaublesxoxo.
  • Pausing for a selfie with Dave. There’s a series of 20 photos, all much more ridiculous than this one. (I’m thinking of getting this one framed. I had a great experience with Instantly Framed last year.)
  • Print mixing out of necessity. I try not to overpack when we go on vacation, so I was left with my Tory Burch tote for daytime to wear with this dress. I was hesitant at first, but I like how it turned out. I used my white Rebecca Minkoff “Mini Affair” bag at night.
  • Plenty of beer stops in Cincinnati. I know many of you aren’t beer drinkers, so I try not to babble about it too much here or Instagram. If you’re interested in what I’m drinking, you can find me on Untappd with username jmhamm.
  • Grocery store flowers tucked into canning jars. I’m an event manager and we had a farm-themed event in May. I bought dozens of assorted blooms and created seven centerpieces for $55. Who needs a florist when you can DIY to save money?
  • Wearing a few of my favorite pieces: a Gerard Yosca necklace, a spring dress purchased last year, and my goes-with-everything tote.

Instant Replay: March 2013

Treated myself to a bouquet of tulips (my favorite flower). Indulged in the prettiest Lilly Pulitzer dress (seen here). Rediscovered an old JewelMint necklace. Spent a sick day curled up with Bacon. Welcomed this Wendy Mink necklace into my wardrobe (c/o). Tried a new brewery town. Sipped a refreshing cocktail on St. Patrick’s Day instead of drinking green beer. Couldn’t believe my luck when I found a coveted coat on eBay (seen here). Wore just a hint of mint.

Visited friends in the Twin Cities and stopped by the Fulton Brewing Company. Splurged on a Lulu Frost necklace. Tried a recipe that makes just two chocolate chip cookies. Wore a chipper nautical scarf from Lilac Bijoux (c/o). Played dress up in that Lilly Pulitzer dress before taking it to the tailor. Layered delicate bracelets with a masculine watch. Went overboard with my favorite lip color (Revlon Lip Butter in “Sweet Tart”). Spent a snowy day admiring jewelry from Julie Vos (c/o). Ate a lot of Easter candy.

Instant Replay: November 2012

Packed our bags. Vacationed in D.C. Acquired vintage ornaments and new candy-colored earrings. Loved this building in Alexandria. Voted. Enjoyed the capital city. Treated myself to flowers. Walked miles in Washington in gold boat shoes. Ate at Pizzeria Paradiso (three times!).

Welcomed new shoes. Admired my mom’s glass pumpkin collection. Bought mittens on Black Friday (my only purchase that day). Paired turquoise with red. Enjoyed an apple ale and the latest Bon Appetit. Watched snow fall at my parents’ house. Wore sparkles … and mint with polka dots. Strung Christmas lights.

Indulged in a magenta bag. Dressed up as a sleepy Holly Golightly. Layered on baubles. Found a brilliant pea coat at Ann Taylor LOFT. Sipped an afternoon beer. Cheered for the Badgers. Baked Halloween cupcakes. Looked forward to Christmas with a new ornament. Adored bouquets from Dave.

Sampled an array of pumpkin microbrews. Lingered over lunch. Added vintage gems to my collection. Admired fall color. Enjoyed fall’s simple pleasures. Relished wearing pink. Relied on the classics. Tucked lipstick into a foxy bag. Donned a new ring courtesy of Gorjana.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
