On the Right Foot: Friendsgiving, Free Things to Do in London, My Favorite Candle is on Sale & More!

November 21, 2022 by jessica Leave a Comment

Weekend snapshots (clockwise from upper left): furniture shopping again for a new bed and I think we’ve narrowed it down to this one in matte teak; sifting through the vintage Christmas decor I inherited when my grandma passed earlier this year; made the season’s first batch of Chex Mix (and forgot the pretzels); gave my plants a shower to rinse the dust off.

Asking everyone to bring pie isn’t the worst idea…

The culture of Friendsgiving.

It’s time to stock up on my favorite holiday candle with 25% off (code RANGER25).

Such a beautiful home tour.

Loving how chic a camel-colored puffer coat looks, especially with the cropped length.

Tips for starting a new tradition.

We had our first snowfall of the year and it was a pretty one.

How to remove salad dressing stains. (And while we’re on the topic of stain removal, this stuff is great for removing red wine.)

18 free things to do in London.

My favorite knit beanie is back in stock in a myriad of colors. It tends to sell out quickly each year.

On the Right Foot: Glitzy Earrings for Under $20, Virtual Interview Mistakes, Winter Care for Houseplants & More!

November 14, 2022 by jessica Leave a Comment

Happy Monday! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! I spent about six hours practicing pottery at the studio, we finally checked out a new sushi place in Madison, and we visited Dave’s sister and met our new niece — she’s a cutie!

How porcelain dolls became a Victorian status symbol.

Key questions to ask yourself before a bathroom remodel.

A roundup of things that caught my eye. I just ordered the dress to try, the plaid clutch is on my Christmas wish list, I’m trying to rationalize the lamp for our office, and those Mary Janes are sweetly sophisticated.

These glitzy earrings are on sale for just $19.50!

How to care for your houseplants over winter.

I’ve never related so much to something.

This tulle-sleeve top is perfect for layering under sleeveless dresses.

Five virtual interview mistakes and how to fix them.

Airbnb is getting more transparent about fees and rolling out more reasonable checkout rules.

A friendly reminder that tomorrow is election day! Click here to make a voting plan and see what’s on your ballot.

I took a pottery class for five weeks over the summer and just started my second class last Friday! I get awfully dirty while throwing on the wheel, so I purchased a “Claypron” at the recommendation of a couple of my classmates. The long apron has a split hem so you can keep your legs covered while working.

Liquor up your holiday guests with a cranberry rum punch.

Thanksgiving will be here before you know it. If you’re hosting this year, freshen up your table with these festive finds.

In love with this beautiful dining room.

Crushing on these croc-embossed loafers in emerald.

The latest handbag brand getting a lot of hype.

USPS has announced its holiday shipping deadlines to get your packages to your loved ones by Christmas.

The importance of practicing gratitude in your relationship.

I just bought this fun, swingy dress! Go down a size as it runs large. (I’m also tempted by this one.)

On the Right Foot: A Gorgeous (And Affordable) Light Fixture, Quality Workmanship, Inside Conde Nast’s Fashion Closet & More!

October 31, 2022 by jessica Leave a Comment

Recent snapshots (clockwise from upper left): Batch Bakehouse made pumpkin bars to look like mummies; finally bought a soap dispenser worthy enough to be in our remodeled bathroom; picked up Oliver’s paw print and, of course, sobbed uncontrollably; went shopping for a new bed, which we hope to select by mid-November.

My favorite holiday candle is back for another year. (If you’re new to the brand, use this code for $20 off your first purchase of $40+.)

We had siding work done on the house last week, which included removing an inoperable door — finally!

Making a case for quality workmanship in a home.

This baking cookbook is on my holiday wish list.

Here are a few mini moments from our recent trip to The Netherlands.

A peek into the fashion closet at Condé Nast.

I just ordered this light fixture to try in our guest room. It’s a great dupe of the West Elm one I had wanted, but for half the price. I can’t wait to see what it looks like in person!

We had an abundance of green tomatoes on our plants that I picked before the first frost and I used them to make this salsa.

Becoming a kinder version of yourself could help boost productivity.

Happy Halloween!

Life Update & This Week’s “On the Right Foot” Link Roundup

October 24, 2022 by jessica Leave a Comment

Hey, friends, so I didn’t anticipate being away from the blog for over a month, but a lot has happened since I last checked in here. The most gut-wrenching was that our cat, Oliver, passed away. Without getting into the details, it was completely unexpected. He went from being himself to being whisked to the emergency vet in a matter of hours. It turns out that he was FIV-positive, which is a lot like HIV in humans where his immune system was weakened and he was unable to fight off an otherwise treatable infection. We were blindsided by the news and are deeply mourning the loss of our furry best friend. I had the image above printed and framed at Framebridge. We did one for our previous cat, Bacon, too and it helped me grieve the loss — and eventually made me smile when I looked at it.

Our loss, unfortunately, overshadowed the post-vacation excitement from our recent trip to Europe. We visited Munich for Oktoberfest (and met up with friends there); then went to Salzburg, Austria; and finished the trip in Amsterdam. I have a lot of photos to share, which I’ll get to when I’m feeling like I’m in a better headspace. Getting back into a routine is helping me cope, so I thought I’d kick things off with a Monday link roundup:

How marigolds became integral to Mexico’s Day of the Dead and India’s Diwali.

I just love this kitchen renovation/relocation.

This is a gorgeous use of tile.

We just finished The Watcher on Netflix, which most already know is inspired by a true story, but there’s another true crime that’s woven into the show.

Malachite earrings.

The holiday season is made for charcuterie boards. Here’s how to assemble a good one.

This is my new favorite sweater. I’ve already purchased it in gray and beige. It’s so soft and fits true to size.

Your posture matters when you take pills.

Tips for shopping final sales.

It’s so nice to be home after a whirlwind week. It’s so nice to be home after a whirlwind week. We flew out to Philadelphia last Friday for a few days of exploring. It was our first time in the City of Brotherly Love and we loved every minute of it from the architecture to the restaurants, and most of all: the welcoming and friendly people. After that, we had one night at home before a flight to Denver to celebrate my cousin’s wedding. We got back to Madison late last night and have spent the day puttering around the house, getting caught up on laundry, grocery shopping, harvesting the season’s first tomatoes from the garden, and admiring just how much the hydrangeas have grown in the course of a week.
I always get a kick out of comparing views of our I always get a kick out of comparing views of our home today to the photos I took during our home inspection. (Swipe to see our main bedroom then!) While I knew the house had potential, it was hard to look past some of the owner’s “design” choices. Though, it looks like the room was destined to have a warm-toned quilt. 😂

P.S. @schoolhouse just released new colors of their popular Stillwater Floral Quilt!

And, for those interested, I’ve linked my bedroom items here: https://liketk.it/5iC8R

It also inadvertently became the weekend I made Dave eat a cheeseburger every day, between @redhotranchchicago, @eatmottst, and @smallcheval. There are worst ways to spend a weekend.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.
