Savings Alert | 20% Julie Vos Discount

October 15, 2014 by jessica 11 Comments

JulieVos-2

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]I[/dropcap]f you’ve been reading my blog for any length of time, you’ll know I’m a huge fan of Julie Vos’ jewelry. (Spot her gems in recent outfit posts here and here.) Her work is basically what you’d expect to find in the jewelry box of a glamorous globetrotter with finely wrought architectural details and a colorful array of semiprecious stones. One of my top picks for the season is the beautiful Acanthus Cuff (above), which was featured in the October 2014 issue of Vogue. I also love every piece in the opulent Baroque collection.

Style File | Rainy Days with Joules

Joules-Rainy-Day-Style

ONE | TWO | THREE | FOUR | FIVE | SIX | SEVEN | EIGHT | NINE | TEN | ELEVEN | TWELVE

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]A[/dropcap]utumn rain always seems to catch me by surprise. Just yesterday I neglected to peek at Weather Underground and scampered off to work in a pair of ballet flats only to find myself dashing through a downpour after work. My car wasn’t far away, but it was still enough time for my shoes to fill with water (and if you think an evening commute is bad, try it with wet, cold feet). That miserable experience offered plenty of motivation to arm myself with an arsenal of rainy day attire that can handle the chilly precipitation, starting with a pair of Joules rain boots.

I already own a pair Joules wellies in turquoise, which I adored last winter, but I’d love to add a more subdued pair to my wardrobe in either olive or black. The glossy finish pairs well with classic, sophisticated items. Try a cropped quilted jacket and a menswear-inspired scarf for a casual look or go glam with a faux fur scarf (it also comes in the prettiest emerald green) and a cozy wool coat. Whatever you do, make sure you stick with a saffiano leather purse. The textured finish repels water and keeps the bag looking pristine.

Style Staple: Rain Boots

I’d hate to utter the F-word, but fall will be here before we know it. (I even received a September magazine in the mail on Tuesday.) A pair of pretty rain boots is the silver lining on those cool, damp days of autumn. I’m loving the preppy versions at Joules, especially the pair with the mustard-colored bow.

In the Know: Gifted Jewelry

March 27, 2013 by jessica Leave a Comment

Of all of the gems in my jewelry box, I don’t pay nearly enough attention to rubies. It’s a shame because July’s birthstone is an interesting one:

  • The world’s largest ruby gemstone is the Burmese ruby at 23.1 carats. You can view it at the Museum of Natural History in D.C.
  • The word “ruby” is from the Latin word for red: “rubens.”
  • In Asian countries, rubies were buried under the foundation of buildings for good fortune.
  • Rubies can be more valuable than colorless diamonds.
  • Rubies are only slightly softer than diamonds, registering a 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness.
  • Rubies can range from orange-red to purplish red. Even though color is a matter of personal preference, the most highly prized rubies are the true red versions.

I was recently introduced to Gifted Jewelry, an online shop with a wide selection of gemstones (including ruby jewelry). I especially love this cocktail-sized ruby ring, but if you’re looking for something more refined this ruby necklace is an elegant option.

Inspire It | Wear It

November 20, 2012 by jessica Leave a Comment

Four things contribute to a satisfying holiday season: gatherings of loved ones, gobs of glittery ornaments, glasses filled with holiday spirits, and, of course, a fabulous frock is a must! The new-to-me site, MissesDressy, has cocktail dresses in every shape and sequin color imaginable (and prom dresses to suggest to the younger ladies this spring).

I’m one click away from ordering those glamorous cocktail picks. They’ll look divine on the bar cart I have yet to acquire.

Shop It: Kate Spade ornament // cocktail picks // Zara Home glass // MissesDressy dress // Bijoux Heart earrings // Gianvito Rossi shoes

Staying at four Graduate Hotel properties last yea Staying at four Graduate Hotel properties last year solidified my love of the brand. Each is located in a college town and the brand does a wonderful job bringing in each city’s personality by way of thoughtful design finishes and kitschy details. In recent years, the brand has done a summer promotion to attract travelers to university towns during a typically quiet time of the year. This year was no different. For 30 hours in May, Graduate sold $30 rooms for the month of July. (Each person was limited to one booking.) We thought about going somewhere outside of the Midwest, but with a trip to Europe scheduled for this fall, we opted to stay closer to home and choose a location that we could drive to. And with that, a trip to Evanston, IL was on the books.

I didn’t know much about Evanston attractions, but I figured we’d find enough things to fill 48 hours. If not, Chicago was only a short train ride away. I’m happy to report that my low expectations were unfounded and I was won over by the city’s charming gardens, quaint neighborhoods, and access to Lake Michigan. It’s not to say that there’s a lot to do in the city. There isn’t, at least in the summer. But it has cute pockets all over that make a stay in the suburbs worthwhile.

Find a list of what we did in Evanston on the blog. (Use the search bar and type in "Evanston" to find it.)

A few moments from the weekend. A few moments from the weekend.
A small moment of peace from the past weekend. I A small moment of peace from the past weekend.

I feel like I’ve been doomscrolling since the news broke of SCOTUS’ decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. My emotions run the gamut from sadness to frustration to unadulterated rage. I’m deeply disgusted by conservatives and evangelicals, but especially by liberals who supported Bernie Sanders and refused to vote for Hillary Clinton at such a crucial moment in our history. Did you know that 12% of Sanders’ primary election supporters voted for Trump in the general election? In Wisconsin alone, 51,000 of them voted for Trump — a state Trump would win by just 22,000 votes.

Your vote matters. It matters in national elections, statewide elections, and local elections. It’s crucial that Democrats organize as strategically as conservatives did and restore reproductive rights.

In the meantime, donate your time, talent, or treasure to help those facing an unwanted pregnancy. @thecut has a great list on their site with organizations to support in states likely to prohibit abortion. I’ve donated to @plannedparenthoodwi.
Reveal day is finally here! It’s been a long pro Reveal day is finally here! It’s been a long process that started back in April 2020 with a kitchen ceiling leak that was attributed to water leaking from our tub faucet and working its way through the floor and into the kitchen. Our bathroom was never anything to look at (before photos on the feed), but the leak really accelerated our plans for a full bathroom renovation when timelines — and budgets — allowed. It feels a bit surreal to have it done and I don’t think I’ll ever stop admiring it whenever I walk past!
