Jamberry1

If there was ever a time for teeny hearts and kisses on my fingers, Valentine’s week is it. And, while I love the idea of nail art, I don’t love the thought of meticulously painting petite designs.

Enter Jamberry Nails.

Jamberry decals are vinyl nail wraps that come in dozens of designs that are a breeze to apply. After prepping my nails with rubbing alcohol and pushing the cuticle back, I selected the wrap that would best fit my nail, heated it up with a hair dryer, and firmly pressed the decal to my nail. (Jamberry recommends using a rubber cuticle pusher to seal the edges, but I just used the flat side of an orange stick.) You’ll need to trim the decal with cuticle scissors and then file straight down to finish them off. I had a hard time neatly trimming the nail decal on my right hand (evidently I’m not that ambidextrous) and found that a nail clipper was much easier. I’m now on day four and just starting to notice the tiniest of chips along the edge, but they’re in much better shape than the rest of my manicure.

Each sheet is $15 and comes with enough decals for three or four full manicures (depending on your nail length). I prefer to use them for accent nails and would love to snag this striped set, which would probably last me through the summer.

Bottom line: It’s a fun way to add a little pizzazz to your manicure without much effort. (You can also see them in yesterday’s post.)

Jamberry Nails provided nail decals free of charge for purposes of this post. This in no way affected my thoughts about the product. Thank you for supporting the brands that support Bedknobs & Baubles!

If there’s any chance you can snag these darling Rifle Paper Co. postcards in time for Valentine’s Day, do it. They’re pretty much the most charming things ever, especially with the bare-chested cupid cooing “Hey Girl!”

Valentine’s Gift Guide for Him

Valentine's-Gift-Guide-for-Him-2015

Last week, I put gifts for the ladies first (naturally), but we don’t want to neglect the gentlemen in our lives! Here are a few ideas that are sure to be a hit on Feb. 14.

  • I actually gave this to Dave on Valentine’s Day a few years ago.  He still uses it everyday. (Bonus points if you’re generous enough to add in a pair of Wayfarers.)
  • A “get out of jail free” pass for men (with a disclaimer that some sins are unforgivable).
  • Help him get organized for an upcoming getaway with a canvas dopp kit from Herschel Supply Company.
  • This Bluetooth speaker doubles as an excuse to play a few slow jams. (You have to make sure it works, right?)
  • Spice things up with a variety of grill seasonings.
  • He’ll appreciate a well-made sweater more than he probably realizes.
  • Sperrys to wear throughout spring and summer.
  • He’ll think of you every time he reaches for his keys with this rugged keyfob by Billy Kirk.
  • Chances are that he has a pair of headphones on his wish list already. I can’t vouch for the quality of this wood-grain pair, but they sure are elegant.

Valentine’s Gift Guide for Her

January 28, 2015 by jessica 6 Comments

Valentine's-Gift-Guide-for-Her-2015V3

We’re just a couple of weeks away from the most wonderful day of the year (pfft…). I’m really not one to celebrate Valentine’s Day with over-the-top declarations of love. I’m perfectly content with small gestures like our annual heart-shaped pizza dinner, a special beer we’ve been saving, and an intense Mario Kart match. Even if you’re like me and crave a low-key day on Feb. 14, it’s still a lovely excuse to buy a little something for the person you love most: yourself. 😉 No significant other required!

  • Rebecca Minkoff has darling heart-shaped pieces available for the holiday. In addition to a quilted crossbody bag (in pink and black), there are conversation heart coin purses.
  • Pucker up! Kelly Wearstler’s lip pieces make me unbelievably giddy. The small and medium catch-all dishes are a luxurious splurge. You could also give yourself a little smooch with this small kiss sculpture, a keychain, or this darling pair of stud earrings.
  • The eyes have it with this flirty boudoir pillow.
  • Take a relaxing soak in the tub with Jo Malone’s red roses bath oil.
  • Tory Burch always nails it with her Valentine gifts. The subtle embossed hearts on this card case make it my favorite of the bunch. (You could also reward yourself for sticking to your fitness resolutions with a Valentine Fitbit band.)
  • Jennifer Zeuner’s dainty jewelry is just so pretty. Even if you’re not a fan of heart-shaped jewelry, there are plenty of other petite designs to choose from.
  • Expecting a flirty phone call? Dress up your iPhone with a romantic case.
  • View the day through rose-colored glasses.
  • Let’s just pretend the arrows on Scalamandre’s classic motif are from Cupid’s bow. This quirky vase is a sophisticated way to display your Valentine bouquet. Would you rather spend the day with a stiff drink? Zebras also adorn this set of double old-fashioned glasses.

Valentine’s Day Gifts for Him

February 7, 2014 by jessica Leave a Comment

Dave and I decided to forgo Valentine’s Day gifts this year, since that cash is better off in a savings account for our trip to Europe. (And, to be honest, I’m really looking forward to our low-key evening of beer, video games, and a heart-shaped pizza.) If you’re still looking for the perfect gift for your sweetie, here are a few ideas that Dave would approve of:

  1. A handsome wool-blend sweater
  2. A versatile everyday watch with a selection of nato straps (I like this all-American version)
  3. Bourbon
  4. A rugged laptop bag that doubles as his day bag on trips (This might be selfish. I hate nothing more than having to carry everything when we’re sightseeing!)
  5. The Complete Beer Course
  6. An apothecary shaving mug (which would look chic on your vanity filled with lipsticks)
  7. Luxe shaving supplies from Mercer + James (I just discovered this great online shop. Take 30% off your purchase through the end of February with the code BAUBLES30.)
  8. City map glasses with one of your favorite destinations
  9. A denim dopp kit
  10. Sphere ice cube molds (I gave a set to Dave for Christmas. Love ‘em.)
  11. A new pair of sunglasses
  12. The best bottle opener on the go
  13. A pair of heart and arrow boxer shorts

Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
