Weekend Reading 04.09.2017

I’m late to the game with this week’s “Weekend Reading!” My parents came to town yesterday, so we spent the better part of Friday and Saturday morning cleaning our apartment. We went out to dinner last night and today we’re celebrating my grandma’s 80th birthday with extended family. In other news, I had my Madison Magazine photoshoot last week. If you saw my Snapchat story (username: bedknobsbaubles), you know I wasn’t exactly thrilled with most of the images that were taken. We shot at the indoor botanical gardens and it was incredibly humid and any bounce my hair had fell within minutes. Despite my initial reservations about the whole thing, the photo that we ultimately chose for publication is pretty and I’m excited for the issue to hit the mail.

The bigger item occupying our minds is, of course, our house hunt. We’re actually looking at a house in a couple of hours that has potential. It’s not in my ideal neighborhood nor my preferred style of house, but there’s something about it that I really like (in the online photos anyway!). Having our house hunt back in full swing has made me obsessive about pinning interior ideas and shopping for home items like this gorgeous chair from Target and a bar cabinet (easier to keep dust-free than a bar cart). Purchasing large-scale items will have to wait until we have a closing date, so I’m adding a few smaller items to our housewares collection instead. I had a few rewards dollars at West Elm that were due to expire on April 15, so I picked up a cocktail mixing pitcher and this darling seashell bowl. I also recently purchased two of these budget-friendly throw pillows for our bed. (Speaking of pillows, how good is this one?!) I’m keeping these purchases to a minimum, of course, since most of our money will be spent on furniture once we find a place! (Plus, let’s not forget the unsexy purchases we’ll have to make! We’ll need a lawn mower, shovels, rakes, etc. Oh, boy! 😉 )

MIX: Dave and I are on our own for Easter this year. We’re going to make a traditional dinner, but I’d love to mix up fun cocktails during the day to make the holiday feel special. These blended tropical drinks sound incredible.

BYE, JENNA: By now, you’ve all heard the news that Jenna Lyons is leaving J.Crew. Here are nine things to remember about her reign at the retailer.

COLOR CRUSH: I’ll admit that one of the things I’m most excited about with a house is the opportunity to choose a bold color for the front door. I’m loving the cantaloupe orange. Of course, it’ll depend entirely on what color the exterior is. We won’t have money to change the house color right away!

SLIDE INTO SPRING: I wish I had a tropical vacation on the books! If we did, however, I’d be scooping up these slides (which I might buy anyway) and this scalloped swimsuit (or this one).

SUGAR-FREE: I had a doctor’s appointment on Friday and he went on and on about the perils of sugar. Yesterday, I came across this post with three sugar-free desserts that won’t have you missing the white stuff.

IN THE PINK: Paul Smith’s  pink building is one of the most Instagrammed spots in L.A., but is it helping the brand drive sales?

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • My favorite dress for spring and summer (and the frock I wore for the Madison Magazine shoot).
  • Coveting a springtime selection of pink, blue, and green.
  • Must-have baubles under $75.

CAUGHT MY EYE:

  • All of the earrings at Anthropologie this season, especially these!
  • A palm-print throw blanket.
  • A polka-dot faux wrap dress.

Weekend Reading 03.31.2017

Whoohoo! We’re mere hours away from April and the promise of spring weather — finally! We have no plans this weekend and I couldn’t be more excited to sit around at home, throw open the windows, and curl up with a book, the cat, and a cocktail. I’m also looking forward to trying a couple of new recipes that I have bookmarked. I made these slow cooker Korean tacos earlier this week and they were pretty disappointing. However, the pork was ah-mazing in makeshift Korean burrito bowls. We sauteed the leftover meat with sesame oil and gochujang, and added salt, pepper, and garlic powder. We put the meat and the slaw (which needed more rice wine vinegar) over rice, drizzled it with Sriracha and Sriracha mayo, and added more green onions. So. Good.

MISS INDEPENDENT: Despite mounting pressure from department stores to create on-trend items that everyone is clamoring to purchase (ahem, off-the-shoulder everything), Tibi designer Amy Smilovic stayed true to her brand’s vision. As a result, her brand is stronger than ever with an even more loyal customer base.

VISIT CUBA: Brittany put together the most helpful Cuba travel guide that I’ve come across yet. In it, she walks you through the logistics of planning your trip, getting there, and many of the things you’ll need to consider before arriving (e.g. expect to enjoy an “unplugged” trip and cash is king — and, well, the only way you’ll be able to pay for things).

STATES OF UNDRESS: I just started watching this documentary series. Host Hailey Gates explore global fashion and its impact on social issues. I’ve only watched the first episode where she traveled to Pakistan and it was fascinating.

CLOTHING  PURGE: Doing a little spring cleaning? Here’s a handy chart to help guide your decision on what to do with that unloved garment.

SIP: Obviously we all need to purchase this gold pineapple for sipping cocktails this summer. It’s the best $15 Target find yet.

8 SURPRISING FACTS: You probably don’t know everything there is to learn about one of Easter’s most beloved candies. (For the record, I’ll take Brach’s jelly beans over Jelly Belly any day.)

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • I picked up a new fragrance from a darling little perfumery in New Orleans called Hové. I went with Clochettes des Bois, which is a light, romantic scent of lily of the valley.
  • I went “Behind the Baubles” with Jenny Bird.
  • Here’s my first outfit post from our trip to NOLA. I’m all about that one-shoulder top for spring and summer!
  • I found myself coveting neutrals this week and completely caved and ordered the clutch. It’ll be here on Monday!

CAUGHT MY EYE:

  • I love the colors in this tropical-print swing dress. The low back might be difficult to pull off with a regular bra, so show off a lace bralette instead. The coconut white would be pretty as would the teal option.
  • The raffia earrings I ordered earlier this week. I love how big they are!
  • A sweet gingham top.

Weekend Reading 03.04.17

I can’t believe it’s already March! We have a few weeks of travel ahead of us and I couldn’t be more excited to finally take a break. We’ll be in Chicago next weekend to see Hamilton. Can’t. Wait. And the following weekend, we’re heading to New Orleans. I’m taking advantage of a lazy weekend at home to clean and pre-pack for our getaways. (I’m such a planner.) After that, we won’t have any trips on the calendar until after we purchase a home, since we’ll need to keep our weekends free for house tours. Madison’s real estate market is insane. Houses go up for sale and oftentimes there’s already an that day. There’s no time to even sleep on a potential purchase. It’s stressful, but I’m hopeful that we’ll finally find something this year!

BABY FOOT: I’m so curious to try Baby Foot. It’s a chemical peel for your feet that’s both disgusting and intriguing. From what I’ve read, the skin on your feet will slough off like a snake’s skin to reveal baby-soft skin underneath. Has anyone tried it? I might do it after New Orleans since I’ll be back home and likely in tights for another week. It sounds like you don’t want to show your feet to anyone during the shedding process. Haha.

CHEERS: I’m craving warm weather, but since that’s not in the cards for awhile I’m happy to settle for a warm-weather drink. This pink grapefruit margarita with chili salt sounds amazing.

OOH LA LA: With the help of Chanel, Paris is planning to open its first permanent fashion museum in 2019. It sounds like I’ll be holding off on a dreamy trip to the City of Lights until then.

SALE ALERT: It’s the last day to take advantage of Shopbop’s tiered sale. I’m crazy about these silver Ferragamo flats, this woven circle bag, and this ridiculously fun phone case.

PINKIES UP: I’m all about the pinkie ring, especially in the form of this sculptural silver piece.

COOK: Homemade pizza is one of my favorite meals. I’m eager to try this blackberry, ricotta, and basil version.

DECODE: It looks like Queen Elizabeth II sends secret messages to her team with her handbag. Use this as inspiration to covertly tell your significant other you need to be whisked away when you’re caught in an awful conversation.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • Spilling the beans on my budget status this quarter.
  • Daydreaming about spring pastels, especially that dress. Swoon!
  • Giving the bell-sleeve trend a whirl!
  • Finally recapping my three-night trip in Nashville with a few must-dos.
  • Daydreaming about spring blossoms in Antwerp last year. (Which is another travel post I really need to publish!)

ON MY WISH LIST:

  • A yellow lace swing dress topped with a bow. I actually just ordered it yesterday!
  • A one-shoulder swimsuit with a fun ruffle detail.
  • Statement tassel earrings for less than $50.
  • Woven totes from this Etsy shop. They’re less expensive than popular designer versions and sound like they’re impeccably made. I ordered this one to use during the day in New Orleans. I’m also crushing on this one. I’ll post a review this month.
  • The cutest work-appropriate shirt dress. I’m already over budget this quarter, but I’m really tempted to order it anyway with the 40% off promotion with code FRIENDS40. I’m awfully bored with my office wear lately and I find myself reaching for the same outfits over and over again.

Weekend Reading 02.25.17

Happy Saturday! We booked a trip to New Orleans for mid-March, so this weekend is all about researching the best activities for day (we have evening drinks on lock!), planning my outfits, and scouting out the best Instagram locations! Have you been to the Big Easy? What would you recommend that we see and do? I can’t wait to take tons of photos of the colorful houses like this one!

OSCAR WORTHY: I much prefer television over movies, but I do get into the Oscars for the clothes. Here are some of the top Oscar fashion moments of all time.

GO GREEN: You’re better than green beer. St. Patrick’s Day will be here before you know it, but there’s still enough time to perfect these recipes for green cocktails that don’t need food coloring to be festive.

PORK INSIDE: How cute are these illustrations meant to ease the language barrier in Japan?

SALE ALERT: You can snag my favorite spring earrings (perhaps in pink?) for 30% off now through March 3 with code COLOR. The code applies to all non-sale items.

ALL EARS: It’s time to ditch that statement necklace. Earrings took center stage at the AW17 runways. And, while we’re speaking of ears, the Oscars have been the perfect time for celebs to grab your ear when it comes to political statements. I’m sure we’ll have at least one on Sunday.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • I wore a dress with the prettiest pleated details. It’s a shame it’s now too cold to wear it again soon!
  • There was a covetable selection of crisp white and cobalt blue for spring. (Those loafers, right?!)
  • Closet cleaning is in full swing. Here are my tips, along with my favorite classic wardrobe items.
  • I bought this affordable dress for NOLA! I didn’t link it on Instagram, but you can snag it here. It runs true to size.

ON MY WISH LIST:
I have a private Pinterest board for pieces I’m seriously considering adding to my wardrobe. This is what I have my eye on this week.

NYFW: The psychological toll of getting dressed for New York Fashion Week as told by fashion editors.

GENDER STUDIES: A recent study shows that girls start having gendered beliefs about intelligence when they’re just six years old.

LAUNDER: Winter is still in full swing. Take care of your sweaters with these tips.

LIPSTICK: Stop testing lipstick shades by swiping them across the top of your hand. There’s a better way.

WIN IT: There are just a few days left to win a sweet charm necklace from Helen Ficalora! The sterling silver pendant and chain retail for $120. Enter here!

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
