Weekend Reading

September 30, 2017 by jessica Leave a Comment

Bell-Sleeve Coat

How is is the last day of September? I feel like a broken record, but this year is just flying by! I can’t say I’m complaining, though, because I’m beyond excited for the upcoming holiday season in our house. First up: Halloween. We picked up a few decorations last weekend at Target, and we’re toying with a few costume ideas to don while we’re handing out candy. If anything, I can throw on the coat from this post and add a witch’s hat!

Weekend Reading:

  • The Shopbop sale was extended through today! Take 20% off orders up to $500 or 25% off orders over that amount with code EOTS17. I bought one thing and I can’t wait to try it on! (I discovered later that it’s a dead ringer for this Kate Spade jacket … and $1,400 cheaper.)
  • When you should and shouldn’t work for free.
  • I’m making this artichoke dip to snack on while we cheer for the Wisconsin Badgers later this morning.
  • Three words: Hot. Pink. Fur.
  • We just scheduled delivery for our bar cabinet for next weekend. I can’t wait for it to arrive! If you love the idea of a bar cabinet, but not the price tag of that West Elm one, this is also a great option.
  • Iconic fashion designers are struggling to connect with Millennials.
  • How fashion illustrator Bil Donovan became the artist-in-residence for Dior.
  • I totally feel this way about baby photos popping up constantly on Facebook.
  • Did you know that Chanel’s iconic little black dress was compared to the Model T car by Vogue?
  • Get in the Halloween spirit with sophisticated and spooky cocktails!

Five Under $50:

  • I love the ruffles on the collar of this sweater.
  • I’m surprised by the negative reviews for this lamp. We purchased two for our bedroom last weekend and love them. The aged brass finish makes them look more expensive, and there’s a nice weight to the pull chain. You might be better off shopping for these in store.
  • Okay, this skirt is $1 over the budget, but look at how cute it is! Wear it to work with slim-fitted sweaters and striped long-sleeve shirts!
  • Zac Posen is my favorite thing about Project Runway. Did you know he has a cookbook? Need.
  • This ruffled dress looks so flattering! Let me know if you’ve tried it!

Earlier This Week:

  • The latest dress I’m obsessed with.
  • Where my money went in September.

Wardrobe Update: September 2017

September 27, 2017 by jessica 1 Comment

Calson Bell Sleeve Top + J.Crew Zip-front denim skirt

I’m shocked that the end of September is right around the corner. I typically work on this post throughout the month, but I woke up this morning and looked at the calendar to realize that we have just three days left of the month! Where did the time go?! The month always breezes past for me because it’s my busiest season at work, which unfortunately leaves me with little time to work on the blog. I wish I had more time for it, but I need to focus my attention on the job that actually pays my bills! No matter how busy I was, you know I found time to add a few new pieces to my wardrobe.

Sale alert!
Before we get started, we need to make sure you’re in the know about the latest Shopbop sale. You can save 20% on orders under $500 and 25% on orders over that amount. Use code EOTS17. If you’re an Amazon Prime member, remember that you also get free two-day shipping. Another great sale worth checking out is at Bauble Bar where you can save 25% off your order with code BIGONE. Hurry, though, that sale ends tonight!

Wardrobe Update September 2017 :: Bedknobs & Baubles

PURCHASED
See all of this year’s sartorial purchases here.

  • Madewell ‘Elinor’ loafers in chestnut: These are fantastic quality and they’re comfortable right out of the box! They run true to size. They’re also available in black and white.
  • Caslon bell-sleeve top in purple (worn here): Unfortunately this is already sold out. If it does pop back, you’ll need to go down a size. The top is adorable with jeans for those nothing-to-wear days.
  • Baublebar ‘Criselda’ earrings in black (worn here): After falling in love with the turquoise pair last month, I couldn’t help but add black to my collection for fall. They’re perfectly lightweight for all-day wear. (Also available here.)
  • LOFT ‘Royal Floral’ shirtdress (worn here): I almost didn’t buy this dress because it looked so drab online. However, the cut is one I typically wear on repeat, so I gave it a whirl. And, I’m so happy I did! I absolutely love this dress for fall. It’s short and loose, which makes it adorable with flats.
  • LOFT ‘Hydrangea Bouquet’ tunic: The fabric of this shirt is an amazing quality for the price point. It feels thick and silky, and the colors are vibrant. It’s a great option for fall to wear over slim jeans or tuck into a flared pair. Go with your typical LOFT size.

DIDN’T WORK OUT
Things I tried and didn’t love.

  • H&M jacquard-patterned dress: I’m still a little bummed that this didn’t work out for me! The monkey pattern is so ridiculous, but in a really good way. However, the fit was awful. The shoulders were too wide (even though the bottom of the dress fit correctly), it was entirely too long and would have needed to be hemmed above the knee, and the bow was too overwhelming on my frame. Good attempt; just poorly executed.

DAYDREAMING ABOUT
The items I just might add to my wardrobe next month.

  • This plaid coat for fall.
  • Gold drop earrings.
  • A suede dress to wear over blouses. I love it in olive.

Signature Style

September 25, 2017 by jessica 5 Comments

Loft Royal Floral Shirtdress

This dress was destined for my closet given that it’s basically an updated version of the one I bought last year and have worn just about every week since. I’m such a sucker for a loose dress with flats, so much so that I’d call it my signature style. To keep my favorite look from getting stale, I look for pieces each season that have on-trend detailing. This year’s iteration of my beloved dress has a sweet bow tied at the neck, dainty ruffled hems, and gathering to add texture. If you’re as captivated with it as I am, definitely go down a size. I usually start with a medium in a new item, but I had to go with a small in this and there’s still plenty of extra room.

Weekend Reading

Weekend Reading 09.23.17

Yesterday was the first day of autumn and I only wish that it felt, well, like fall! We’re in for the hottest first-fall weekend on record in here in Madison with temperatures hovering around 90 degrees. (Whoever says that climate change isn’t real is full of it!) We’ll be out and about enjoying these last few days of summer weather over the weekend. But we’re most excited about our couch arriving today! It’s been almost 10 weeks and I can’t wait to finally have it here!

Weekend Reading:

  • Dave splurged and bought us both the iPhone 8. I’m thrilled because I’ve been having battery issues with my old one. (It would completely shut off when it the charge dropped to 30% and wouldn’t reboot until it was plugged in. It was frustrating when it happened in Copenhagen last year and I needed the map to get around!) With a new phone comes a new case, of course. Rifle Paper Co. is offering free shipping on phone case orders. Casetify is also offering free shipping. I’m kind of into this design.
  • It sounds like Instagram might be switching to a 4 x 4 grid rather than the 3 x 3. I don’t like it. You?
  • Sorry, but The Devil Wears Prada cerulean speech is wrong.
  • My brother lives in Washington and I still haven’t been out to visit! We really need to do a combined trip of visiting him and spending a few days in Seattle. This guide is making me antsy to book tickets.
  • This should probably serve as your Halloween costume inspiration.
  • I’m seriously considering this plaid coat.
  • The inside story of Donatella Versace’s homage to her brother Gianni.
  • The BBC is going to air a Harry Potter documentary.
  • Did you see this major tech glitch over at Anthro? Oops!
  • There are few things I love more than lounging around the house in pajamas on a weekend morning. I’m loving this striped set!

Five Under $50:

  • An elegant blouse to wear with jeans or tuck into a skirt.
  • This is the perfect summer-to-fall top for when temperatures are on the warmer side. Isn’t the color gorgeous?
  • I’m all about the blue-and-black pairing on this floral dress.
  • These floral post earrings are so sweet!
  • A sheer bell-sleeve blouse.

Earlier This Week:

  • The best blouse for early fall.
  • More fashionable fall favorites.
  • I can’t get enough of thread-wrapped bauble earrings.
  • My favorite pieces from Target’s Project 62 collection.
  • More weekend links over at Curated Couple.

The Edit: Ball Drop Earrings

September 22, 2017 by jessica 2 Comments

Bauble Bar Criselda Ball Drop Earrings

Who would have thought that Rebecca Ravenel’s oversize bauble earrings would cause such a stir among the fashion crowd with affordable lookalikes popping up everywhere? It probably shouldn’t have come as a surprise, of course, knowing that statement earrings are topping everyone’s must-have jewelry list and lightweight designs are a godsend for keeping our earlobes from drooping in old age! I’ve recently become obsessed with these Bauble Bar beauties — so much so that I keep looking for additional earrings with thread-wrapped baubles for my collection! Below are some of my favorites. (And if you’re already tired of these, it looks like Rebecca Ravenel might just spark a new trend. Look at how gorgeous these wooden earrings are!)

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
