BEMOAN
Gap Inc. recently announced plans to close 175 stores. This piece discusses why Gap may have lost its cool and became, as the author so eloquently puts it, a “basic bitch.”

DRINK
We have beer. We have raspberries. We have orange juice. Soon, we’ll put them together and have beermosas. I hope they’re as good as the photo looks.

FOLLOW

SEE
We all know Disney takes some creative liberties with its animated princesses. See what they’d look like if they were historically accurate.

LEARN
According to this article, German-Americans are America’s largest ethnic group and they’ve assimilated so well that we barely even notice.

LIGHT
I love bringing a new scent with me on vacation. It helps bring back happy memories of our travels when we return. Hi Wildflower Botanica is looking to do the same thing with books.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
I may be on crutches, but I refuse to let it kill my summer style. Here’s inspiration for an 11-piece wardrobe to get you through the work week with ease. Many of the items will transition into fall. (Truth be told, I already purchased the dress, skirt, shell, and cardigan. The dress is incredibly well-made and flattering. I’ll need to get the top taken in, but it’s worth it.)

STUDY
‘Tis the season for weddings! If you’re planning nuptials, here are some guidelines to make the party a memorable one. Although, I’d skip the pig roast. (True Embarrassing Family Story: My late grandfather owned a tavern. When I was young, he decided to host a family reunion with–what else?–a pig roast. Long story short, the bar set aflame. The Hamm side sure knows how to party.)

[spacer]

CONSIDER
I don’t know if I could wear the same thing to work every day, but I appreciate the freedom that comes with it.

[spacer]

SMILE
The Mindy Project is one of my not-so-guilty pleasures. Behold, a bit of Mindy wisdom.

[spacer]

SHOP
Gray Malin has sweetened the pot with free framing for a limited time. Your walls are looking a little dull, right?

[spacer]

SIP
Not only do I want to drink this, I want to Instagram it.

[spacer]

SWOON
The Humane Society of Utah partnered with photographer Guinnevere Shuster to take photo booth-style portraits of pups up for adoption, capturing each dog’s quirky personality. It’s been a huge success with a 93.26% placement rate. (Really, click through, the photos are irresistible.)

FITNESS UPDATE
I’ve been sick with a terrible cold for about a week now. The only upside of feeling cruddy and losing my appetite is that I’m officially down 10 pounds since mid-January. The dress I wanted to wear to Dave’s sister’s wedding (today!) finally fits and I’m a lot less insecure about rocking a swimsuit in South Florida next week. I still have another 10 pounds I’d like to shed, but we’ll deal with that after vacation.

ADORN
A little inspiration to dress up your basics with the sparkliest jewels you own.

[spacer]

LEARN
We all know that men’s and women’s shirts button up on opposite sides, but why is that still the case?

[spacer]

PREPARE
The Lilly Pulitzer for Target look book is finally out. Out of curiosity, I totaled the price of everything I’d love to own. It came to $500. Needless to say, I’ll be paring down to the must-haves: a pineapple serving dish, teak beach chairs, throw pillows, and pom pom trim shorts.

[spacer]

BAKE
My parents are coming to our place for Easter this year. The main dish and the sides will be easy to whip up, so I’m concentrating on the dessert. I’m not exactly sure what I’ll make yet, but this sounds divine.

[spacer]

VISIT
Here are seven places to see tulips, my favorite flower, in bloom this spring. (We’ve actually looked at visiting Holland, Mich. for the annual tulip festival.)

[spacer]

CONSIDER
Fran Lebowitz is one sassy broad, but I find much of her style commentary to be spot on. I completely agree that we should all invest in well made items and take care of them properly. And, for the love of God, no one should wear sweatpants in public. It’s basically waving the sartorial white flag.

[spacer]

FITNESS UPDATE
I’m down another pound for seven total! Heck yeah! I tried on a pair of compression capris at Old Navy yesterday, since everyone seems to love them. Uh, the white and blue pair were definitely sheer. I’m assuming a black pair wouldn’t be as scandalous!

[spacer]

IN OTHER NEWS
I just added a new feature to my side bar highlighting a weekly find for $50 or less. This week’s item is a lobster print silk canvas handbag for $50. It’s available in red and navy.

SWIM
This inflatable swan makes me so happy. If you have access to a pool this summer, you need one.

[spacer]

BAKE
This just might be the springiest dessert I’ve stumbled across yet!

[spacer]

GIVE
We tend to only talk about gifts when the holidays are around the corner. Here’s a list of hit hostess gifts welcome year round. (May I also suggest this pie server?)

[spacer]

SHOP
Lilly Pulitzer items are quintessentially summer. There’s a gift-with-purchase promotion this weekend with presents for all spending levels. I recently purchased this dress. I had to go up two sizes to shimmy into it, but it was worth it. There are cups sewn into the bodice, so I don’t even need to wear a bra (a perk with such a low back). And I caved and ordered this dress today.

[spacer]

LEARN
Being groggy might actually make you more creative.

[spacer]

MEET
I can’t wait to see Iris. Until then, I’ll just enjoy learning more about the vivacious lady  through an interview.

[spacer]

FITNESS UPDATE
I’m down another .8 pounds this week for a total weight loss of 6.1 pounds since I started! (Woo!) I think this will finally be the weekend Dave and I invest in running shoes. (Eep!)

[spacer]

IN OTHER NEWS
There will be a lot of NCAA trash talk this weekend as I obsess over my bracket. (I used this emoji list and women’s intuition to fill it out.) I’m also planning to stop by the greenhouse for a selection of succulents. I’d love to plant something like this. I returned my entire Ann Taylor order. This jacket ran large in the shoulders and I liked it, but not enough to size down. The polyester fabric of this romper made that horrible crinkly sound and it ran awfully small in the hips.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
