Weekend Links

Weekend Links 03.24.18

Happy Saturday! We only have one more weekend to go until we’re wheels up in route to London! I can’t adequately describe how happy we are to having a trip on the horizon. We haven’t had a vacation in over a year, with the exception of taking a few days off last summer to paint the house. We both need a break from work and an opportunity to explore a new-to-us city. I’ve been going back and forth on booking reservations for tea at Sketch. It’s obviously an Instagram favorite and the tea service does have good reviews, but I’m not sure if spending the equivalent of $160 is worth it for a photo opp when I’d be just as happy with street food. Other than that, we’re in fairly good shape with our itinerary and we’ll be putting the finishing touches on it this weekend.

We’ll also spend time around the house this weekend putting our spring projects in motion. One of the biggest things we’d like to tackle is our outdoor space. Last summer, our lawn was mostly made up with weeds, which normally doesn’t bother me as long as it’s green, but we want to whip things into shape this year and create an outdoor area that we want to spend time in. We raked the leaves this week and picked up all of the sticks that fell over the winter. We also ripped up the landscape fabric that the previous owner put down over the entire perimeter of the yard for some ungodly reason. It looked awful and you’d see pieces of torn fabric in the yard, especially after mowing. Now that that’s gone, we’ll put down grass seed and see if that takes. We do need to have four trees removed when we get back from our trip because they’re infected with emerald ash borer. I was initially upset that four mature trees need to go, but they’re dying and removing them should give our yard a lot more sunlight in the afternoon. (Plus, one that’s getting taken out drapes over our deck and spiders randomly fall out of it. Ew.) After that, we’ll look to paint or stain our front porch, stain the deck, and buy outdoor furniture. Phew!

Weekend Links:

  • I’m smitten with Clare Elsaesser’s art. I’m contemplating this print, this one, or this one for our home.
  • You’ll be surprised to learn what color the Eiffel Tower was originally painted.
  • This bathroom is seriously inspirational. I love how the different tiles work together to create a cohesive space.
  • A roundup of spring cocktails to try.
  • Fashion photographer Bill Cunningham wrote a secret memoir that will be published this September. You can pre-order it here.
  • Jessica’s roundup of every outfit she wore in Australia is giving me major wanderlust.
  • This chair is amazing.
  • I really dislike our kitchen. The walls have an awful textured treatment, the floor is outdated linoleum that looks like river rocks (seriously), and the counter is a speckled brown that hides just about every crumb and spill (great, until you clean and realize it was dirtier than you thought it was). We don’t want to invest too much in a remodel, so we’re just looking at doing cosmetic changes. One will definitely be painting the cabinets white. I’ve bookmarked this post with step-by-step directions for doing it right.
  • Gray Malin wallpaper is a thing!
  • My style icon, Iris Apfel, now has her very own Barbie! While I won’t be purchasing the doll, I did just order her book.
  • 16 of the most beautiful streets in the world.

Finds Under $50:

  • I love the wood detail in these modern earrings.
  • How great is the bust detailing on this swimsuit?
  • I’m eager to try this lip scrub.
  • The perfect mug for weekend coffee.
  • These bow-topped slides are the cutest!
  • Classic menswear-inspired pajamas.
  • The shape of this sleek cocktail shaker is perfect.
  • A sophisticated jumpsuit that will look adorable with black slides this summer.

Earlier This Week:

  • Wearing all of my favorites in one outfit.
  • I have a crush on both pairs of earrings in this week’s “The Coveted.”
  • Sharing five of my can’t-live-without-it items under $50.

5 Items Under $50 I Can’t Live Without

5 Items Under $50 I Can't Live Without

Don’t you just love when you find an inexpensive item that becomes so integral to your routine that you couldn’t imagine your life without it? Me, too! Which is why I was so excited to take part in the first-ever blog linkup for <em>press themes that challenged participants to share their must-have items under $50. Below, you’ll find five of my everyday essentials along with a list of other people who are divulging their favorites. Be sure to share your own in the comments! I’m all for any new-to-me products that can make my life easier!

5 Items Under $50 I Can't Live Without

If you suffer from dry flaky skin, you need to add this serum to your beauty arsenal. This is the only thing that has worked to keep flakiness at bay and keep my complexion smooth. I apply one pump of product and follow up with moisturizer once it’s absorbed. The texture of the product doesn’t feel luxurious — and sometimes a little sticky — but after you smooth it on and leave it for 15 minutes or so, it disappears into your skin and feels weightless. In the morning, those little flakes have miraculously disappeared leaving my skin smooth and soft. The price is steep at $36 per ounce, but you really don’t need a lot of product at a time.

5 Items Under $50 I Can't Live Without

Full wallets take up so much space in a purse, and it’s space I don’t really have given my affinity for small crossbody bags! A few years ago, I purchased a small card case like this one (Kate Spade ones often go on sale, too) and haven’t looked back since. It takes up barely any room to bring along my true must-haves — driver’s license, credit card, debit card, and $20 worth of cash — freeing up space for my other daily essentials. I keep my wallet handy in my closet for additional credit cards, gift cards, and loyalty cards.

5 Items Under $50 I Can't Live Without

Every now and then I suffer from insomnia. It was worse at the apartment before we purchased our house, which leads me to believe that a lot of if is anxiety-based given that the house hunt was so stressful, but I still struggle with it every few weeks. One of the things that has helped the most is this white noise machine. It creates a soothing sound of rushing air that drowns out other ambient noise and you can adjust the speed and tone to find the one that’s best for you. (On the most restless nights, ZzzQuil or one of its generic counterparts works, too. Plus, you get the benefit of those crazy NyQuil dreams without the cold medicine.)

5 Items Under $50 I Can't Live Without

I’ve had these tweezers since college and they’re the absolute best at plucking stray hairs and they’re sharp enough to grab even the most pesky ones. If your tweezers ever get dull, you can send them back to Tweezerman to get sharpened for free.

5 Items Under $50 I Can't Live Without

This portable charger is one of the most useful items under $50 that we own. We purchased it before we went to Copenhagen back in 2014 and were incredibly impressed with its staying power on the trip. It can fully charge an iPhone five times before its battery depletes and the relatively slim profile makes it easy to carry around all day. Plus, you can plug in two phones at once. Not only do we bring this charger on every vacation, we typically carry it with us when we’re out on the weekend. It’s small enough where Dave doesn’t mind putting it in his pocket if my purse space is at a premium.

Weekend Links 03.09.18

Happy Saturday, everyone! We made it through another week, which means spring is that much closer. (Don’t forget to “spring ahead” and move your clocks an hour forward tonight.) We have absolutely nothing on our must-do list this weekend and I couldn’t be happier about it. Yesterday afternoon was a busy one, though. I was on the phone for almost two hours scheduling companies to give us quotes on tree trimming and widening the end of our driveway. I also scheduled an appointment for someone to come in and discuss adding roller shades to our dining room and bedrooms. They don’t look difficult to do on my own, but I want to feel all of the material choices and have someone else measure and install them so I don’t screw it up. We’ll look at adding drapes down the road. For now, I just need our bedroom to be dark!

Weekend Links:

  • Daylight Saving Time starts tomorrow. Even though I find the concept asinine (even more so after reading this), I’m excited for it to be light out longer after work.
  • Exploring the history of leopard print clothing.
  • Lydia linked to this post about the early days of blogging in her “Peaks of the Week” post last Friday. Does anyone else miss the days where we were all eager to support each other and share the great things one another was posting? It made the blogging community so fun! I’d like to become better about doing that myself.
  • Mattel’s Barbie brand is honoring a new group of women in its “Shero” collection. The collection was launched in 2015 with dolls “based on women who break boundaries in sports, politics and entertainment.”
  • Did you see Bozoma Saint John’s amazing Oscar look?
  • These shoes look way more expensive than they are. Plus, you can take 40% off this weekend with code FRIENDS40.
  • How to estimate the cost of a renovation.
  • A tangerine, ginger, and chocolate tart looks like an amazing choice for an Easter dessert.
  • I discovered the whimsical work of Janet Hill Studio this week.
  • These are such good tips for having a date night at home. (I’m guilty of wearing loungewear … making a mental note to correct that!)

Finds Under $50:

  • I stopped by Old Navy yesterday to buy this dress in grey. It’s going to be so comfy for our international flight! I then spotted this dress on my way out. I was wearing layers and tights and didn’t want to go back in the dressing room, but it looks like it’s good quality and it’s really cute!
  • This tie-front dress is perfect for spring!
  • I always feel conflicted about designer knockoffs, but these affordable parrot earrings are pretty amazing.
  • A simple dress with a twist.
  • Brighten up your kitchen with a colorful collection of juice glasses. (While we’re on the topic of colored glassware, I’m thinking about this pitcher for the tray on top of our bar cabinet. It’s so pretty!)
  • A sophisticated menswear-inspired nightshirt.

Earlier This Week:

  • The best $49 you’ll spend this season.
  • Mini moments from February.
  • Five tips for finding and identifying your personal style.
  • Photos of our living room the day of our inspection versus now.
  • Feminine pieces to covet for spring.

Mini Moments: February 2018

Mini Moments: February 2018

Last month, I mentioned that I wanted to bring back a roundup of “Mini Moments” from the month prior and share some of my goals for the month ahead. I dropped the ball on getting this up closer to the first of the month, but hey, there were still a few things worth reminiscing about and sharing with you! I’ll have this week’s “Weekend Links” post up tomorrow.

Mini Moments (top to bottom, left to right):

  • I finally bought the Gucci bag I’ve been saving for! It’s ridiculously indulgent, but goodness, I’m so happy with it! (If it’s on your wish list, you can see what fits inside here.)
  • Dave and I went out for date night drinks at Robin Room in Madison. Their cocktails are amazing and you know I’m smitten with the pineapple neon sign in the window.
  • I finally got around to painting the door frame of my closet. I’m sure it comes as no surprise that I was anxious to cover up that tan color with crisp white paint! Also, I can’t stand it when hardware is painted over. (Apparently you can boil the hardware in water to loosen the paint. Latex paint should peel right off and lead-based paint should crumble off. That’ll be a project for an upcoming weekend.) A quick tip for removing stubborn screws that have been painted over: position your screwdriver in the groove and hit the base with a hammer. The extra force should shake some of that paint loose. I also used a razor to remove the paint at the edges of the screws.
  • I participated as a judge for the Madison Reading Project’s READ(y) to Wear fashion show. It was basically a Project Runway unconventional challenge with paper.
  • An outtake from this post cracks me up.
  • I played hooky last Tuesday when the temperature crept close to 60 degrees. I treated myself to sushi for lunch, picked up tulips, and wandered around our neighborhood on a 2.5 mile walk. (You can snag the trench coat here and similar loafers here.)
  • I’m all kind of obsessed with this gingham cutie for $28.
  • I had been using dollar store salt and pepper shakers for the last 10 years. We finally upgraded to these marble and brass beauties.
  • We checked out Forequarter for their happy hour menu of sliders and tacos. It was delicious, but the cocktails were too expensive for what they were (as far as Madison pricing goes). I’d rather stop here again for happy hour snacks and get drinks somewhere else.

Upcoming Goals:

  • Start painting the upstairs hallway.
  • Replace the light fixture in my closet. This was actually on my goal list last month, but the fixture I ordered from West Elm arrived damaged with a scuff in the brass base and two chips in the globe. (It also arrived in two boxes and after three weeks of continuously asking for a second mailing label with a different tracking number, they finally had to send someone from UPS to pick up both boxes. It was such a frustrating mess. I’m not exactly pleased with West Elm’s customer service when a problem crops up as we’ve had a few additional annoyances, but that’s a story for another day.) The new one just shipped out, and I hope it’s actually a new one and not just the old one coming back to me because I do really like the shape of it.
  • Finalize my packing list, shopping, and itinerary for London! I’m doing my best to not over-pack this time and bring extra pieces just for outfit photos. I’ll likely do an outfit roundup when I get back to show you how I remixed pieces during the 10-day trip. I hope it comes off as inspiring rather than boring!
  • Get a quote on laying additional concrete by our garage for a parking pad. We have a long driveway between our house and our neighbor’s house and a one-car garage. I can park to the side of the garage door to let Dave in and out, but it’s easier for me to turn around before driving out rather than backing out the length of the driveway. I was able to do so on our lawn with the ground frozen, but that’s not going to be doable much longer!
  • Have someone come in to discuss replacing the window shades in our dining room (they’re a dingy beige color) and adding them to our upstairs bedrooms. We’re going to add roller shades now and look at drapes later.

Living Room Progress: Inspection vs. Today

March 7, 2018 by jessica 2 Comments

Living Room Before and After

We still have work to do in our living room in terms of accessorizing and styling, but I thought I’d give you a peek into where things are at right now compared to when we did our inspection in May. Obviously the before photos are on the dim side and that’s not an intentional editing choice to make you think it’s worse than it was. It was really that bad. Most of the light bulbs were partially unscrewed so they wouldn’t turn on and just about every window in the house was covered by fabric (men’s shirts and old sheets rather than window treatments). The paint was this awful creamy color that wasn’t quite as yellow in the images below, but it was as dingy and soul sucking as it appears here.

Living Room Before and After

The first thing we tackled (after removing kitchen cabinetry from the guest room and a random square of teal carpet in the coat closet) was repairing cracks in the plaster walls and painting as much as we possibly could before we had our floors refinished. We got through the living room, dining room, the wood-paneled master bedroom and office, the guest bedroom, and the tiny room that eventually became my closet. The far wall in the staircase was left unpainted at the time because I’d like to wallpaper it. I didn’t want to spend the time painting something I was just going to cover up eventually. At this point, though, we’re leaning toward painting it white and doing wallpaper next year for my living room. It’s such an expensive project and we have other priorities to take care of. However, painting everything else white and removing the window coverings opened up the space and made it feel brighter and more welcoming, so the cream wall doesn’t bother me too much at the moment. My plan is to paint the upstairs hallway, ceiling, and trim this month and get to the top of the stairs. We’ll hire someone to finish up the stairwell since I’m not graceful enough to stand on a ladder while I paint. We have pretty high ceilings there and I have no doubt that I’d fall or get paint all over the stairs.

Living Room Before and After

After about a month of painting every night after work and on weekends, we finally got a week-long break when our floors were refinished. The red oak floors were in awful shape (check out this pic of the floor in my closet) with patches in the floor that were different colors, and scuffs and scratches throughout. Upstairs, the stain was on the yellow side. I’m not sure if it was the polyurethane was showing age or if it was just a bad stain choice to begin with. Our floor refinisher said that the downstairs floors had likely never been refinished, which is great for future owners because you can only refinish floors approximately 10 times since you’re sanding off approximately .75 to 1mm with each round. We went with Minwax’s “Early American” stain. It’s lighter than the original color, but still felt traditional in the 1920s home. The biggest selling point was that it didn’t have red or yellow undertones. We paid $2.75 per square foot and ultimately came in just shy of $2,600. Worth every penny. (Pro tip: hardwood floors will eventually get scratched no matter what you do. Use a stain pen to camouflage the imperfections.)

Living Room Before and After

Replacing the sconces is next on the to-do list for the living room. We’d also like to find a better throw pillow, a larger rug, and redesigning the corner that we have that wood chair in the photo above. The side chair is great for putting on shoes and using for additional seating. However, a mid-century modern bench might fill the space better. I’d also like to find artwork to hang in that area. All that stuff is easy, though, and will fall into place as we find the right pieces. I don’t want to push anything and accidentally have our house look like the 2017/2018 West Elm catalog because I was too impatient to wait for the right item. Now that the living room is in a good spot, we’re talking about what room to embark on next. It’s a toss up between the dining room or kitchen. The dining room is definitely easier and really just requires furniture, a woodworker to fill in spots were the trim and crown molding is missing, and window treatments. The kitchen is a more adventurous project. It’ll all be cosmetic updates and not a true renovation, but there’s a lot to do in that room from skim coating the textured walls to replacing the linoleum flooring that has a gross river rock design.

I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
