Weekend Reading

Weekend Reading 01.21.17

NOLA: I think we’ve finally picked our spring vacation destination. I had never seriously considered New Orleans as a must-visit location, but I’ve warmed up to The Big Easy after doing some trip research this week. Pretty architecture and beignets? I’m in!

MIX IT UP: Doesn’t this Chartreuse Swizzle cocktail look amazing? It’s the perfect thing to beat the winter blues this weekend.

POWER DRESSING: Learn how clothing played a role in the civil rights movement.

WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS: This image has been making its way around the Internet to teach women the different ways breast cancer can look and feel.

HOLA: How cute is this tote bag?! (And how dorky am I for wanting to purchase it for an Instagram in New Orleans with the caption “Hola from NOLA?”)

DECORATE: Use throw pillows like a pro.

FEMINISM: The women’s march has had some hiccups along the way, but here’s why you shouldn’t criticize it too harshly.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • Me. In a T-shirt. And jeans. What?!
  • All of the things I want right now.

Weekend Reading 01.07.17

INSTA: The next time you’re in the Windy City, make it your mission to check out a few of these Instagram-worthy locations.

LEARN MORE: This week, Hitha wrote a wonderful post about how Planned Parenthood works and shared four things you need to know about the health care provider.

YES, BUT: What happens when you’re excited to marry the love of your life, but the ring isn’t up to par?

LET THERE BE LIGHT: I need this brass floor lamp in my life. While home purchases aren’t prudent until we buy a house, I’m sure we’ll find a spot for this beauty. (Here, Target, take all of my money. Again.)

MEET AGGRETSUKO: I’ve always had a soft spot for Hello Kitty and other Sanrio characters. The new office-working red panda, Aggretsuko, just might be my favorite one yet.

YUM: Not only do these chicken gyros look amazing, they’re easy to prepare in a slow cooker. Make a big batch and bring it with you to the office for lunch next week.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • Goals for 2017!
  • The warmest winter coat I own.
  • Budget baubles that don’t sacrifice style.
  • Yes, I totally froze to wear this outfit sans tights. #DoItForTheBlog

Weekend Reading 12.30.16

TRIP PLANNING: We’re busy making our travel plans for 2017 and this post is the ultimate escape eye candy. So far, we’re considering Arizona in March (I’ve never been to the Grand Canyon), a long, lazy weekend beachside, and a summer trip to Europe (possibly London).

SHOP: The post-holiday sale at Gorjana continues to be the most tempting thing ever with deeply discounted baubles. They’re perfect for layering together or with your statement-making pieces. I ordered this and I’m tempted to add this to my collection, too.

OOPS: Take a trip down memory lane with 2016’s most awkward fashion moments.

SHOPPING MISTAKES: Personal shoppers weigh in on the 30 shopping mistakes we all make — and how to avoid them.

PARTY PERFECT: Can these flats be any more perfect? I’m thisclose to buy them, but I can’t decide between yellow or pink. I’m leaning toward yellow because it’s more unexpected.

FITNESS TIPS: Easy ways to stay healthy on your next adventure.

HEALTHY EATING: Now that the holiday cookies are finished, it’s time to start eating healthy again. Liz shared 10 healthy recipes to try in the new year.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • My final budget update of the year.
  • Favorite outfit posts from 2016.

‘ROUND THE BLOGS: I’m thinking of adding a link-up to the “Weekend Reading” posts for you to share your favorite blog posts from the past week. Yay? Nay? Thoughts?

The Weekend Guide

The Weekend Guide 12.02.16

BAKE
Just five ingredients and 40 minutes yields this sinful cake.

WATCH
H&M partnered with Wes Anderson to create an adorable short film for the holidays.

MEET
Heidi Zak, a MIT graduate, hopes to revolutionize the bra industry with her brand ThirdLove. Plus, meet the women taking a fresh approach to condoms and tampons.

READ
Like many of you, I binge watched Gilmore Girls last weekend. Here are just a few of the articles I enjoyed this week following the visit to Stars Hollow: one, two, and three. And they all contain spoilers. You’ve been warned.

ORGANIZE
My side of the closet is a nightmare. I really need to follow some of this organization advice.

SEE
Spotify mined its user data brilliantly to create its latest ad campaign.

EARLIER THIS WEEK
Everything I bought on Black Friday. (The dress is gorgeous in person, but may be too tight on well-endowed ladies.)
November’s shopping sins. (Black Friday excluded.)
Twenty-five holiday dresses under $100.
A gift guide for animal lovers and pets.
And gifts you’ll want to keep for yourself.

The Weekend Guide

The Weekend Guide 11.25.16

I don’t know about you, but I’m struggling to move today thanks to yesterday’s overindulgence in stuffing and pie. I don’t know if I even have the energy (or interest) to whip out my credit card and participate in the Black Friday shopping circus! The day after Thanksgiving usually turns into a shopping extravaganza for myself and I have my eye on exactly one item: a metallic silver bag that I’ll wear all winter. Everything else? Eh. I’d rather save my money for a trip abroad next year. Okay, and the clothes to outfit that excursion. (There are fantastic deals on spring flights to Amsterdam from Chicago!) What about you? Tell me what you bought so I can live vicariously through you!

LEARN
Historians differ on how to archive fashion. Do they opt for a designer’s untouched artistic vision or the influence of a client on a designer’s work?

CONNECT
This handy map includes the WiFi passwords for airports all over the world.

BAKE
Even if you’re reeling from Thanksgiving, loosen that belt buckle another notch and head to the kitchen to whip up a batch of peppermint mocha cookies.

SIP
The next 30 days are all about sugar and high fat items. May as well add a salted caramel white Russian to the mix.

REFRESH
I’m always amazed at how quickly a coat of dark paint transforms a room. I’m loving this bathroom refresh.

WATCH
I hope you’re spending the day glued to Gilmore Girls on Netflix. I won’t have a chance to binge it until Sunday and I hope it’s not as uncomfortably awkward as the promotional posters were! I loved reading this overview of seasons three and four from two people who hadn’t watched the show before. (Seriously, Dean was the worst.)

EARLIER THIS WEEK
Added a little color this winter.
Shared a gift guide for the coworkers you actually like. (Tee hee.)
Rounded up ten of the prettiest polishes for winter.
Celebrated Thanksgiving.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

• Spent quality time with my favorite cat

• Biked for Pacificos, chips and quac, and tacos at @bandit.tacos

• Loved how the rain collected on the Lady’s Mantle I planted last year

• Dipped my toes (quite literally) into this year’s mesh shoe trend

• Snapped a lot of Lily content

• Drove home with a new lilac in the passenger seat

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
