The Weekend Guide 07.29.16

READ
Michelle Obama’s dress at the Democratic National Convention may have been understated, but her choice to feature American designer Christian Siriano may have hinted at a political statement.

TRY
Combining cucumbers and peaches doesn’t seem like a winning flavor profile, but this summer salad actually sounds amazing.

MAKE
Because all frozen desserts are better with booze in them…

SAVE
An extra 25% off at Clare V. this weekend! Use code CVSUMMER25 through Aug. 1. This is my favorite pouch.

ANTICIPATE
JetBlue just announced flights from Florida to Cuba for just $99 each way, making travel to the country more enticing than ever. Your trip still has to fall under one of the 12 approved categories for obtaining a visa. I wonder if blogging falls under “journalistic activity.” Worth a shot?

STOP
“Nine Non-Threatening Leadership Strategies for Women” is by far the best thing on the internet this week.

EARLIER THIS WEEK
Wore a swingy slip dress and my new favorite shoes.
Put together the ultimate pre-fall wish list.
Confessed this month’s shopping sins.
Found my next outfit photo location.
Bought this dress two hours ago. Oops!

SHOP
Paige Gemmel nails vintage Palm Beach chic with her artwork now available at Society Social. See a piece styled in this room.

EMBRACE
I’ve kept many of my bright summer piece stored away this summer, opting for a more neutral palette. This editorial will make you want to do the same.

WEAR
I just came across this pair of earrings. Aren’t they perfect for summer? The brass beauties are only $30 and are handmade in Kenya, plus a portion of every sale will go to A Voice is Heard.

SMILE
Children in England named their elementary school after the infamous street artist Banksy. Banksy responded in the best possible way.

ADMIRE
You already know how much I adore Lele Sadoughi’s jewelry and now I’m coveting her interior style. Take a tour of her home here.

REMINISCE
Lisa Frank now has a clothing line. My grade-school self is geeking out.

NOTABLE SALES
Nordstrom: you may have heard that the #NSale started…
LOFT: 30% off regular-price styles with code VACAY; extra 60% off sale
Anthro: 20% off regular-price items through the weekend
Bloomingdales: extra 40% off sale or 50% if you buy more than one item
J.Crew: extra 40% off final sale

Wore a pair of jorts for the first time.
Coveted items that can only be described as “desert chic.”
Explained why there a binder clip in my makeup bag.
Bought these amazing mule sandals. (Go up a half size.)

The Weekend Guide 07.15.16

FIRST THINGS FIRST…

It seems like every week there’s another awful thing happening in the world. Last night, a flat-bed truck plowed into a Bastille Day celebration in Nice killing 84 people. I don’t have the words to express how incredibly sad, heartbreaking, and shocking yet another terrorist attack is. While evidence proves that the world is becoming less violent, it doesn’t always feel that way.

REMINISCE
Reese Witherspoon took a trip down memory lane showing off — and trying on — some her costumes from Legally Blonde. Bend and snap, ladies!

DISCOVER
Before the cronut, there were fondue parties, ranch dressing on everything, and ladies flocking to the bar to order a cosmo. See what foods were popular over the last 40 years.

KNOW
I’m totally into Pokémon Go, especially because the location-based, augmented reality game is being considered a fitness fad, urging people to get outdoors and walk to catch ’em all. Personally, I enjoy taking a couple of 10-minute walks to break up the work day. Did you know the game was actually conceived two years ago as an April Fool’s joke?

SEE
Photographer Oliver Curtis turned his back on the world’s most famous landmarks to take photos in the “wrong” direction.

ENJOY
Researchers have discovered a strong link between those who drink more and those who exercise more.

MAKE
If you’ve dreamed of heading to New York Fashion Week, Cathy’s guide is a must read. She walks you through the steps to secure a hotel, and snag invitations to shows and presentations. Fair warning: you’ll have to hustle to make it happen.

EARLIER THIS WEEK
Enter to win a personalized gemstone necklace.
Sipping on tropical drinks in Chicago.
A frond-print dress in the Windy City.
This week’s most coveted items are perfect for late summer.
My thoughts on the #NSale.

The Weekend Guide 07.08.16

KNOW
As you know, Dave and I are getting into the cycling habit. We went on a 24-mile ride on Saturday and a 10-mile ride earlier this week after work. It’s great exercise and I’m even more enamoured knowing how good it is for both one’s mind and body. I’ve even — gasp — purchased athletic clothing to wear on our rides. My very first Athleta purchase consisted of this striped sports bra, this eyelet one, a skort, and a tank. They’re all so cute!

LEARN
In the midst of this week’s devastating news items (you know what I’m referring to), we made it to Jupiter. Isn’t that crazy? The spacecraft is expected to nosedive into the gas giant’s atmosphere in 2018, essentially self-destructing. Here’s why.

MAKE
I’m a sucker for hummus. This DIY version looks so much better than the pre-packaged alternative I typically buy for lunch!

SUCCEED
The first 90 days at a new job are crucial. Don’t screw ’em up.

VISIT
On Tuesday, we decided to book a hotel and spend the weekend in Chicago! I’m loving Jennifer’s guide to the best street art and murals in the city. Follow along on our Windy City adventure on Snapchat. My username is bedknobsbaubles.

ANALYZE
Instagram is slowly rolling out its own analytics program and it looks pretty great. Read Elle’s comparison between it and Iconosquare. (The analytics option isn’t available to me yet. I’m hoping I get access soon.)

EARLIER THIS WEEK
Enter to win a personalized gemstone necklace.
I wore red, white, and blue on Monday — just like the rest of you!
Mixed up a boozy pineapple punch.
Created what has basically become my fall wish list.
Reviewed the latest POPSUGAR Must Have box.
Obsessed over the Miu Miu sunglasses that you can try for free!*

*Try them for FREE (or choose from hundreds of other options) with DITTO’s Endless Eyewear program. Get your first month free with code BEDKNOBS. If you love the program, it’s just $24 per month afterward, and you can cancel at any time.

COO
Farm animals wearing expensive jewelry is one of my favorite things of the week. (Most of their gems cost more than what’s in my jewelry box!)

SPEND
We all know that spending time outdoors is good for you, but it could be better than we ever thought possible with a measurable reduction in stress, higher levels of creativity, and spiritual and emotional benefits. Just 10 to 15 minutes a day is enough to start reaping the benefits.

LEARN
Honeymoon history is as surprising as the word’s etymology. (On a related note, how cute is that photo from Danielle’s wedding? Her vintage dress is gorgeous, too.)

SNAP
Fourth of July weekend means an influx of firework Instagrams. Make yours the best of the bunch with these tips.

MEET
You know how much I love learning more about jewelry designers. New-to-me designer Ina Beissner has caught my attention with this interview. Browse her collection here.

BRING
Potlucks and cookouts are usually code for unhealthy meals, but that doesn’t have to be the case. Here are two recipes to try next time you’re asked to bring a dish to pass.

NOTABLE SALES
Anthropologie: extra 30% off sale with code EVENBETTER
Furbish Studio: 20% off sitewide with code FIREWORKS
J.Crew: 40% off summer styles here with code COOLSTYLES
Lele Sadoughi: summer steals under $100
LOFT: 50% off everything with code JULY4TH
Lulu Frost: 20% off with code JULY20
Rebecca Taylor: extra 40% off sale with code FIREWORKS
Tory Burch: extra 30% off sale with code EXTRA30

EARLIER THIS WEEK
Summer’s most interesting bag.
A collection of pretty neutrals.
Another month, another set of sartorial confessions.
Finally ponied up for a Tory Burch Fitbit bracelet, now on super sale.
I also ordered a skort for cycling, since I’m just not on board with shorts.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
