Weekend Links 02.02.18

Today marks seven years that Dave and I have been together! We’re heading to Milwaukee this weekend for a little getaway to mark the occasion where we’ll be hunting for vintage furniture, scouring record stores to add to our vinyl collection, wandering around the Third Ward, experiencing the ice bars, and meeting up with friends at Mitten Fest. In other news, we booked a trip to Austin for my 35th birthday at the end of May! If you have any recommendations, let me know!

Weekend Links:

  • Over five years, a waiter collected 8,000 origami sculptures left by customers.
  • What you need to know when buying furniture.
  • Ten anniversaries worth traveling for.
  • How cute is this planter?
  • All of the 2018 Super Bowl ads that have been released thus far.
  • Thoughts on how to save shopping malls.
  • Does data science work when it comes to dating?
  • Try these breathing techniques the next time you’re feeling overwhelmed.
  • The science of swearing.
  • There’s a ceiling fan at the top of our stairs and it’s pretty much the stupidest place for one. We’re likely going to replace it with this beauty.
  • Menswear revenue is expected to outpace the womenswear market.

Finds Under $50:

  • Vintage-inspired glasses to update your home bar.
  • A sweet gingham dress.
  • Pick your favorite shade of Pantone’s Color of the Year for your next manicure.
  • A romantic and flattering wrap dress.
  • A pair of geometric statement earrings.

Earlier This Week:

  • Reflecting on a month of [almost] no shopping.
  • The sunglasses in this week’s “The Coveted” are ridiculous in a really fun way, and they’re only $16.
  • I lost four followers on Bloglovin’ after posting this outfit. Meh. I like the top! 😉
  • I can’t resist a selfie when there’s a sunburst mirror around.
  • This is why I can’t always hate on winter in Wisconsin.

Reflecting on a Month of [Almost] No Shopping

February 1, 2018 by jessica 5 Comments

J.Crew Majesty Peacoat

At the beginning of January, I was reeling from an expensive December with holiday and car-related spending. I needed a month to take a step back and get my financial act together before heading into the rest of the year. It was a lofty challenge and I wasn’t entirely successful at curbing unnecessary purchases, falling victim to this shirt and a vase. Yet, spending just $35 on these things was still a pretty big financial win for me and I was able to get my budget back on track. I wrote about my spending freeze strategies at the beginning of the month, and the one that helped the most was wish listing everything. It’s really shocking to see how many things lose their luster after sitting on a Pinterest board for a few weeks. (Granted, this only works if you’re willing to add it to your list and then try to forget about it the rest of the month. It’ll be much harder if you keep going back to daydream about it.) Below, I’ve listed the things I thought I’d buy once February rolled around and where those things now stand.

No longer want:

  • Jeffrey Campbell ‘Irina’ flats – I spotted the black version while I was mindlessly scrolling through Instagram and thought they were ridiculous, but in a really fun way that would play nicely off of a black dress. Now I just find them ridiculous in a juvenile way that doesn’t work with my wardrobe or my aesthetic.
  • Zara mini frilled dress – I really wanted this at the beginning of the month, but I’m glad I held out. I’m tired of dark floral now that spring is nearly here.
  • Madewell t-shirt – As cute as this one is, I realized that I’m just not one to wear t-shirts regularly enough to add this to my collection.
  • Cult Gaia ‘Eva’ earrings – These seem expensive for what they are. I love the design, though.
  • Zara mini bucket bag – Why spend money on a subpar purse when I’m saving up for the Gucci bag of my dreams?
  • Sam Edelman ‘Lior’ loafer in black – These had been on my wish list for awhile, but after the sleek pointy-toe Madewell loafers came out (listed below), I no longer want this pair.
  • David Yurman ring – I’ve had this on my wish list for a couple of years now. However, this month I realized that I just don’t want to save up for it and would rather spend my money on other things. I have a gold-plated Monica Vinader ring that I wear every day and I’d rather buy a no-name real gold band to replace it with than go with the David Yurman ring.

On the fence:

  • LOFT shimmer tile ruffle blouse – I need to see this in person. It’ll either be adorable with jeans and I’ll reach for it over and over again on nothing-to-wear days, or it’ll be too voluminous and look sloppy. I don’t really need more bulk on my frame. Has anyone tried it?
  • Cult Gaia mini ‘Cupola’ bag – Do I really need this when I already have the Ark bag? Plus, it’s hard to spend that much when I paid less than $50 for my large Ark bag before the brand became popular.

Still love:

  • Line & Dot ‘Adelene’ dress – Alright, I have to confess that I ordered this last night. I have another dress from Line & Dot that I’ve worn almost weekly for three summers now, and I still love it as much as I did the first time I put it on. This is such a pretty option for spring. Plus, you know how much I love loose mini dresses.
  • Leigh racerback shift dress – I’m really eager to try this on in person. It seems like a versatile option that can go from work to weekend with ease.
  • Gap skinny black jeans – Every few weeks I find myself wishing I owned a pair of black jeans. It’s probably time to just try a pair in person and see how I feel about them.
  • Madewell ‘Francis’ loafer – I have a pair of brown Madewell loafers and they’re incredibly comfortable. I’m hoping this pair will be a good option for our trip to London when I want something nicer looking than a pair of sneakers.
  • Paravel crossbody capsule bag – I’m sure I’ll own this within the next few months. It’s been on my wish list since last summer and my crush on it hasn’t waned, especially given how much I love the quality of the brand’s backpack.
  • Gucci small ‘Marmont’ bag in black – Obviously this is still on my wish list. I’ve been putting aside $25 per paycheck over the last year, along with blog revenue that doesn’t get earmarked for something else. I’m $33 away. OMG.

So, what did I learn?

  • First things first: I’m going to be much better about curbing impulse spending, and not fall victim to sales and free shipping offers. Those are by far my Achilles’ heel. I always tell myself that I can return the item if I’m not crazy about it, but I’m usually too enamored once I try it on at home.
  • There are a lot of pieces I added to my wish list and then cast aside! I’m going to continue wish listing items to make sure they’re things I actually want a month later. I’m thinking of giving myself a two- to four-week waiting period between the initial spark and finally pulling the trigger. That should be plenty of time to see if something falls into the “meh” category after the first rush of excitement wears off.
  • I found myself becoming much better at creating lists of the holes in my wardrobe, as evidenced by the third list above. Many of those items are things that I’ve wanted for awhile, but they took a backseat to more exciting purchases. I’d like to prioritize those items to mix into my existing wardrobe.
  • High quality, classic styles capture my fancy for much longer than trendy pieces do, and I’m a sucker for a short dress. Instead of throwing money at trends or trying something different, it’s better for me to put my money toward the things that I actually love and wear frequently.

Your turn!
Did you try something similar this month? Have you ever tried a no-shopping challenge? How did it go? What lessons did you learn?

Loft Bell-Sleeve Top

Loft Striped Bell Cuff Top

Forty degrees felt downright tropical when I took these photos on Saturday. The warm(ish) weather was such a welcome break from the frigid temperatures we had been experiencing and a fantastic excuse to break out the LOFT bell sleeve t-shirt I picked up a couple of weeks ago. I wanted to wear it with my red DVF bag, but came across this one as I was rifling through my closet. I’m still as enamored with the design as I was when I first purchased it. However, it doesn’t fit the current iPhone rendering it virtually useless now. I bought it when I had an iPhone 5s (I think) and it was a tight fit then. Anything larger needs to find a home in a pocket (or, you know, Dave’s pocket). Despite this, I can’t bear to part with it. I love the design too much, but I won’t be adding too many more mini bags to my collection again!

Weekend Links 01.28.18

I didn’t expect to take almost a week-long hiatus from the blog, but the days got away from me! Like many of you, I lose a lot of ambition in the winter when it’s dreary outside, and then I’m too eager to relish the nicer days that I let the blog take a backseat. Sometimes those breaks are nice, though, and offer a chance to come back to things with a fresh perspective.

One thing I wanted to share before we get to the best finds around the ‘net is the Madison Reading Project’s READ(y) to Wear fundraiser that’s happening on Feb. 10. (Think of it as an evening devoted to a Project Runway-inspired unconventional challenge with fashion created from paper.) I was selected to be a judge this year, so if you’re in the Madison area, this is your opportunity to see me live out my fantasy of being Nina García. Proceeds from the evening go toward literacy programs and enable Madison Reading Project to purchase books for the children in their partnering programs.

Weekend Links:

  • Joy Cho’s luggage collaboration with Calpak is so bright and cheerful!
  • A look at some of the trends fashion editors are giving up in 2018.
  • I’m all about houseplants lately. Here’s a roundup of some of the year’s chicest plants.
  • This kitchen remodel is gorgeous.
  • The 50 best fashion tips of all time.
  • How to freestyle tomato sauce.
  • I wish I had a place for this lamp.
  • Highlights from the couture jewelry presentations.
  • Nine decor items that will elevate your home.

Finds Under $50:

  • Black pointy mules.
  • An airy blouse.
  • A cross-body bag with a trendy handle.
  • A simple black shift dress.
  • Eye-catching earrings.

Earlier This Week:

  • Images of our house’s exterior over the past 10 years as seen on Google Maps.
  • A peek into our living room progress. (I shared one image on Instagram yesterday, but you’ll find more pics here.)
  • Another roundup of neutrals for spring.

January No Shop Update: I shouldn’t have gone to Target last week when I was feeling dissatisfied with our living room because a walk through the Project 62 aisle had me tucking this vase between the La Croix and cat litter. The quality of the vase is great and looks like it was purchased from an artisan, but for an insanely affordable price of $13. So as far as unnecessary purchases go, I’ll be finishing up the month with the vase and this shirt for a total of $35. It could have been a lot worse and I’ll share some of my thoughts on the month later this week.

It’s so nice to be home after a whirlwind week. It’s so nice to be home after a whirlwind week. We flew out to Philadelphia last Friday for a few days of exploring. It was our first time in the City of Brotherly Love and we loved every minute of it from the architecture to the restaurants, and most of all: the welcoming and friendly people. After that, we had one night at home before a flight to Denver to celebrate my cousin’s wedding. We got back to Madison late last night and have spent the day puttering around the house, getting caught up on laundry, grocery shopping, harvesting the season’s first tomatoes from the garden, and admiring just how much the hydrangeas have grown in the course of a week.
I always get a kick out of comparing views of our I always get a kick out of comparing views of our home today to the photos I took during our home inspection. (Swipe to see our main bedroom then!) While I knew the house had potential, it was hard to look past some of the owner’s “design” choices. Though, it looks like the room was destined to have a warm-toned quilt. 😂

P.S. @schoolhouse just released new colors of their popular Stillwater Floral Quilt!

It also inadvertently became the weekend I made Dave eat a cheeseburger every day, between @redhotranchchicago, @eatmottst, and @smallcheval. There are worst ways to spend a weekend.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.
