Spring Casual

White Tunic Sweater & Denim Shorts :: Bedknobs & Baubles

I’ve had this outfit on repeat lately. It’s such an easy ensemble to slip on and feel pulled together without sacrificing comfort, and the tunic sweater is the perfect spring-to-summer transitional piece when the weather just isn’t warm enough for a flimsy top. (It also looks cute with cropped pants for the office.) I bought this one late last summer from J.Crew, but LOFT has a few alternatives that I like even more: this one comes in lavender and heather grey, this one has cute ties at the sides and comes in tomato and gold, and I’m all about the variegated turquoise stripes in this one.

Weekend Reading

Weekend Reading 04.22.17

I hope you’re having a wonderful weekend! We’re off to see another house in a couple of hours. This one needs a bit more love and attention than the last house we put in an offer on, but there’s something I like about that. We’re less gunshy about making changes to the interior to really make it reflect our aesthetic. It’s hard to do that on a home that’s been recently renovated, even if the finishes aren’t to our taste. To that end, I’ve still been shopping for home items that I love, like a robin’s egg blue garden hose of all things. (It’s half that price at our local hardware store.) I never thought a garden hose would grace my wish list, but here we are. #Adulting

And with that, here’s what caught my fancy this week:

  • Dolce & Gabbana is partnering with the home appliance brand SMEG for a collection of brightly colored kitchen appliances that highlight Sicilian folklore.
  • How is Urban Outfitters navigating today’s retail landscape?
  • Ah! This mini woven tote is so cute! I just love all of the colors.
  • Abercrombie & Fitch is growing up, thanks to its senior vice president of design. (I’m surprised by how much I love this striped romper from the brand. Pair it with slides and a woven bag and you’re set for summer.)
  • I had no idea that Victoria’s Secret and Nike are among the top brands for Millennials.
  • I just bought this tie-front dress. I love that the top is lined and the fabric is thick enough that small-chested ladies won’t need a bra.
  • These earrings also arrived this week. They’re pretty lightweight for how large they are.
  • Here’s a cocktail that’s almost too pretty to drink.
  • The iconic TWA terminal at JFK airport by mid-century architect Eero Saarinen is being renovated into a hotel.
  • Just look at these gorgeous photos of Australia’s salt ponds.

ICYMI:

  • Preppy favorites for this week’s “The Coveted.”
  • Three one-piece swimsuits that are wallet-friendly alternatives to Marysia bathing suits.
  • A ruffled dress I wore in New Orleans.

The photo above is from our trip to NOLA. I’m planning to have a travel guide up next week!

Look for Less: Marysia One-Piece Swimsuit

Look for Less: Marysia One-Piece Swimsuit

Lydia’s comment on yesterday’s post prompted me to go on an Internet scavenger hunt last night to find affordable alternatives to the Marysia swimsuits we all love. It’s definitely easier to find scalloped-edged bikinis, so I focused my hunt on one-piece bathing suits, which I love more anyway. (Seriously, why bother killing yourself at the gym just to get a summer-ready bikini body? Pack it all in a one-piece, grab an umbrella cocktail, and call it a day! #MoreToLifeThanAbs 😉 ) I bypassed quite a few cheap-looking versions and narrowed it down to three I felt were the best “inspired by” swimsuits that look like they cost more than they do. The key was finding options with a textured fabric, which is characteristic of a lot of Marysia suits.

First up, this black one-shoulder swimsuit that comes in at just $39.99. It has quite the flirty back! It’s also available in magenta.

Next, a bright poppy bathing suit. This is the most expensive of the group at $99.99, but it’s still a far cry from dropping over $300 on a swimsuit. Like the black one, it doesn’t have a lot of coverage in the back. It’s also available in white and black.

And, finally, my favorite of the three: this white halter-top suit. It’s the least expensive at $28.99. It has full coverage, so you won’t need to worry if you’re rocking some love handles this year. The online description says the swimsuit is fully lined. Hopefully it’s done well enough that a dip in the pool won’t leave you overexposed!

Let me know if you try any of these! I’d love to know if they’re as great in person as I hope they are!

It’s so nice to be home after a whirlwind week. It’s so nice to be home after a whirlwind week. We flew out to Philadelphia last Friday for a few days of exploring. It was our first time in the City of Brotherly Love and we loved every minute of it from the architecture to the restaurants, and most of all: the welcoming and friendly people. After that, we had one night at home before a flight to Denver to celebrate my cousin’s wedding. We got back to Madison late last night and have spent the day puttering around the house, getting caught up on laundry, grocery shopping, harvesting the season’s first tomatoes from the garden, and admiring just how much the hydrangeas have grown in the course of a week.
I always get a kick out of comparing views of our I always get a kick out of comparing views of our home today to the photos I took during our home inspection. (Swipe to see our main bedroom then!) While I knew the house had potential, it was hard to look past some of the owner’s “design” choices. Though, it looks like the room was destined to have a warm-toned quilt. 😂

P.S. @schoolhouse just released new colors of their popular Stillwater Floral Quilt!

And, for those interested, I’ve linked my bedroom items here: https://liketk.it/5iC8R

It also inadvertently became the weekend I made Dave eat a cheeseburger every day, between @redhotranchchicago, @eatmottst, and @smallcheval. There are worst ways to spend a weekend.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.
