The Weekend Guide 06.17.16

FOLLOW
I came across the Instagram and blog of Liz Clark this week. She’s a California native, surfer, and environmentalist who left a traditional lifestyle to live aboard her 40-foot sailboat and explore the sea. An adorable cat, who she named Amelia, joined the journey. There are so many swoon-worthy photos on her Insta (of both her adveture and her feline first mate) that you’ll want to leave your own 9-to-5 and buy a boat.

PREP
Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale is right around the corner! Sign up for Nordstrom’s free rewards program now through July 10 to receive a $10 coupon to use during the sale event. Whenever you shop with Nordstrom, you’ll earn one point for every dollar spent. You’ll receive a $20 certificate after accumulating 2,000 points (which seems like a lot, but it probably adds up). I’m bummed that I signed up for the program a couple of weeks ago! I would have loved extra cash to spend!

EAT
I made this Mexican corn dip earlier this week and it’s amazing! I added a teaspoon of cayenne to the recipe, but otherwise followed it as-is. Next time, I’m going to cut the butter in half. I don’t think it needed that much.

LEARN
Cartier’s signature Love bracelet went from a status symbol in the ’70s to a must-have accessory for Millenials. Here’s why that may be. (Not to be terribly judgmental, but that seems ludicrous given its $4,500 entry-level price.)

SHOP
One of my favorite shopping events has begun: the Lulu Frost online sample sale! I’ve got my eye on the Traveler earrings that I missed out on last year. I’m also loving this necklace for holiday parties (too early?) and these quirky earrings.

WATCH
Amy Shumer and Anna Wintour swap careers in this Vogue video. (Anna kills it.)

EARLIER THIS WEEK
An update on the house hunt and my dining room decor board.
Coveted a collection of white and gold.
Chatted about girls in glasses.
Found myself tempted by pineapple candlestick holders, but settled on a white throw pillow instead.

Girls in Glasses

Girls-in-Glasses-Style-Inspo

When I was 10 years old, I asked for the American Girl doll Molly for two reasons: she had pants and she wore glasses. Given that both of my parents had glasses, I figured it wasn’t long until the optometrist told me that I would have to don a pair of my own. I was right. A few years later, I was being fitted for my first pair of glasses. It was an eye-opening moment to realize that I could actually see the individual blades of grass on our lawn, rather than a wide expanse of green. (I probably should have gotten glasses earlier.) Despite that, I tossed them to the side and refused to wear them to school in fear of being ridiculed. If only I had style inspiration from the gorgeous gals above to give me confidence! Eventually, my parents caved and purchased contact lenses for me and I didn’t grow to appreciate glasses until I purchased a pair of thick, nerdy black frames in my 20s. I’m actually overdue for a new pair (the shiny plastic coating is starting to wear off on mine). I’m considering another pair of black glasses, but there are so many frames and retailers to choose from. It’s daunting! I had considered going with a luxury label for my eyewear, but that’s a huge investment for something I wear so infrequently. I’m now leaning toward affordable retailers, like Express Glasses, which gives me the opportunity to buy a few different styles to switch up my look whenever the mood strikes.

The Best Glasses for Your Face Shape

Not all glasses are flattering on every face shape. Read on for tips on choosing the best pair for you, but don’t forget to experiment. Stopping by your optometrist to try on frames is a fun way to see what’s available.

Oval – An oval face is longer than it is wide with gently rounded features. Lucky for you, most glasses are flattering on your face shape. Try on everything from circle frames to angular styles to oversize glasses. Make sure you choose a pair that fits your face size.

Round – Those will full cheeks and less defined features typically fall into the circle category. Complement your features with angular frames such as a winged-tip cat eye, or classic rectangle frames.

Square – If you were blessed with strong, angular cheekbones and your face is approximately as wide as it is long, you likely fall in to square category. Complement your angular features with glasses that have soft rounded curves and avoid anything with harsh, sharp edges.

Heart – Ladies with heart-shaped faces have broad foreheads in comparison to their chins. When it comes to glasses, look for balance between the top and bottom of the rims. A pair of frames with rounded edges (perhaps circle glasses like Iris Apfel) is an unexpected option. Rectangle frames are also flattering.

Beauty Tips

For contact wearers, donning a pair of glasses is usually a sign that you’re throwing in the towel for the day (and quite possibly that you’re sick or hungover). Avoid looking like you just rolled out of bed with these simple beauty tips.

Eyes – This is not the time to shirk eye makeup. Even with oversize frames, glasses can make eyes appear smaller. Make your peepers stand out with neutral eye shadow and a bit of eyeliner, followed with at least two coats of mascara. You’ll want your lashes to be the star of the show with those frames. (Please remember to use a lash brush to remove tarantula-like clumps.)

Lips – A swipe of lipstick will define what type of look you’re going for. Choose a bright lip for for a glam, fully-finished look. Want something more businesslike and refined? Choose a soft pink color. (Dior has some great options here.)

Cheeks – In all of the inspiration photos above, you’ll see that the ladies added color to their cheeks. For some, it’s a bit of blush to add rosy color. For others, it’s a contoured cheekbone. I prefer the latter with rounded frames to add contrast to the shape of the glasses. I like a soft pink blush (like NARS’ “Orgasm”) with squared-off frames for a dose of femininity.

Decor Dreams: Dining Room

Dining Room Inspiration

As you may remember, last week Dave and I were faced with a difficult to decision: put a pin in the house hunt and renew our lease for another year or roll the dice and hope we find a house before the end of June so that closing lined up with the last day of our current lease. After long discussions about our options (and taking into account your thoughtful words of advice), we decided to sign our lease for another year and start looking again in a few months. And it’s a good thing, too. Nothing came on the market last week that even piqued our curiosity. As some of you pointed out, we’d probably find ourselves settling on a house and compromising on our must-haves with that kind of pressure. I think it’s the right decision, but I can’t say I’m not disappointed. I was looking forward to finally ditching our weird transitional furniture and hand-me-down pieces in favor of things that actually fit our aesthetic. We’ve waited to do so because we we wanted to buy furniture that would fit in the rooms of our eventual house. Now, we’ll just go in the opposite direction and make sure we buy a home with rooms that can accommodate our things.

I’m antsy to start working on the dining area. I’ve had the image above pinned as my main source of dining room inspiration for over a year now. I love the mix of traditional and modern furniture that creates a sophisticated space. I’m using the table and chairs as my jumping off point, as you’ll see below, but I’m going in a direction that’s less Scandinavian.

The Weekend Guide 06.10.16

TRAVEL
Iceland is experience a boom in tourism. (Heck, it’s even on our travel list for next year!) To help curb some of the rapid growth, the government is exploring ways to limit the number of Airbnb rentals through new tax laws.

LEARN
There have been opinion pieces published recently (ahem, New York Times) discussing whether or not office dress codes should be more strict. According to a fashion historian, this shift has been in the works for decades — and likely encompasses our society’s yearn for individualism.

SHOP
There’s a fun sale at Tory Burch with in-season merchandise at a discount! I’m likely going to abstain this time around, unless I come up with a need for this bag or this bag! Shop clothing, shoes, bags, and accessories.

EAT
I’m making these sandwiches for lunch every day next week.

READ
I don’t want to put a damper on your day, but you should really make a point to read — and share — the powerful letter from the Standford rape victim to her attacker.

GIVE
As it turns out, there are lasting benefits to growing up around books.

EARLIER THIS WEEK
Enjoyed a lakeside lunch.
Wore a new off-the-shoulder top. (You can snag it here.)
Purchased a door mat (available here) that will be tucked away until we find a home.
Showed off a breezy linen-cotton shirt.
Coveted a tropical selection of items.
Went “Behind the Baubles” with Mary Frances Flowers.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
