Things I Bought & Loved in August

August 31, 2023 by jessica Leave a Comment

WARDROBE
See this year’s sartorial additions here.

  • Barbour stretch ‘Cavalry’ quilted jacket – We’re going to Switzerland this October and I wanted a waist-length puffer jacket that would keep me cozy on our Alpine days but could easily be packed away in a backpack if the weather warms up. Not only did this Barbour jacket check of my must-haves, it’s also extremely flattering for a puffer with the knit paneling on the sides to give it shape and the chevron quilting. I also love that it has a double zipper and snaps on the back to allow for some give around the hips if needed. Go up a size if you think you’ll be wearing it with thicker sweaters. My regular size was great with a long-sleeve t-shirt, but got too snug when I put something more substantial underneath.
  • Warby Parker ‘Augusta’ sunglasses – I can’t walk into Warby Parker and leave without a pair of sunglasses. What I loved about the frame isn’t just flat across the front. Instead, the frame is concaved between the edges of the frame and the lenses. It’s a fun refresh for my sunglasses collection, especially since I’m never going to get on board with the tiny sunglasses trend.
  • H&M rib-knit sweater with collar – I’m going to wear this all fall with jeans. It’s cozy, but still pulled together enough to wear to work. I went down a size.
  • Madewell ‘Lucie’ floral print dress – I’m on the fence about this dress, even though I’ve kept it. We bike a lot with our friends to go out for happy hours or dinner and I don’t always love wearing shorts to do so — I’m not graceful enough to bike without shorts under a dress. I’ve been adding a few dresses to my wardrobe that are dark enough that I can wear bike shorts underneath that stay concealed. This dress seems a bit twee for my style, but it’s pretty cute paired with strappy sandals, a woven bag, and ’70s-inspired sunglasses. I went up a size for length since the smocked top fit similarly in my regular size.
  • Target crewneck cashmere-like pullover sweater – This is such a hit from Target! It’s so soft that it has me eager for sweater weather. I went up a size because it’s cropped and I preferred the extra length to half-tuck into my waistband.
  • J.Crew seaside short – I have these in black and wear them all the time, so I added navy to the mix this summer.

HOUSEHOLD

  • Target woven pumpkin – Target does such a great job with its annual pumpkin lineup. Mine was actually from the “Dollar Spot” for $3 and is slightly different. I have this one from last year, though, and I love that it’s autumnal without being garish.

On the Right Foot: Bottega Earring Dupes, What Happens to Returned Items, The Most Perfect Emerald Green Dress & More!

I could get on board with a cabin if I could take inspiration from this retro-meets-modern getaway.

Schoolhouse launched a Labor Day sale this week with 20% off $250 or more and 25% off $500 more. It’s a good time to buy a splurge-worthy item you have your eye on.

A fascinating read on what happens to the items you return.

Don’t sleep on this sweater at Target. It’s cozy and soft, and you don’t have to be too precious about it at that price point. I went up a size because it’s cropped and I wanted a bit more length.

A guide to growing garlic. You’ll want to get it into the ground late fall.

Love these Bottega earrings, but not the price tag? This “inspired by” pair looks like a good alternative — especially for $8.

Frying an egg in feta cheese? Sign me up!

The best way to store fresh herbs.

Ways to use ChatGPT at work to streamline your day.

I can’t stop thinking about this beautiful emerald green jacquard dress. It’s far too early to talk about the holidays, but it’s reason enough to make sure my calendar has a fancy fete on the horizon. It’s perfection!

Have a wonderful week!

On the Right Foot: 2010s Fashion, Halloween Decorations to Buy Now, Chaos Gardening & More!

A few autumnal pieces to add to your wish list now. (I’m snapping up that classic Tory Burch bag the moment it goes on sale.)

The 2010s are making a fashion comeback.

True for all cat owners.

A few photos from our fall trip to Amsterdam that I hadn’t shared on the feed previously.

I love the idea of “chaos gardening.”

Making the case for capitalizing “White” in addition other racial and ethnic identifiers like Black and Brown so that “White” isn’t inherently though of as the standard or the norm. (This is definitely worth a read if you’re involved with any type of content creation professionally or as a hobby.)

How good is this slip skirt in the greenhouse floral print?! There’s also a matching shirt.

The wood-paneled bar cubby in this home is adorable!

It’s way too early for Halloween decorations, but the good stuff goes fast. I have my eye on these ceramic skulls and an adorable pair of ghosts.

On my must-bake list.

Enjoy your week!

On the Right Foot: Tile Inspiration, the Prettiest Fall Handbag, How to Clean Your Pillows & More!

August 7, 2023 by jessica Leave a Comment

Above: A few snapshots from our weekend trip to Northern Wisconsin to visit my parents and an afternoon of hiking in the Upper Peninsula. Lily loved being outside!

This pumpkin pie with a cake-like crust and crumble topping has me eager for fall baking!

Bring a touch of pink to your home decor.

Making a strong case for floor-to-ceiling green tile.

Yes, you should probably clean your pillows.

I’m daydreaming about this ladylike bag in the most perfect shade of brown.

I adore that the owners of this home kept that bold tile arch!

Say goodbye to incandescent bulbs (for most uses). I know not everyone likes LEDs, but I’m a fan. Just take your time researching and trying different brands to find the best temperature and brightness for you.

Loving the red and lilac floral print on this skirt.

Extreme heat really does make you feel more irritable.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
