Things I Bought & Loved in July

July 26, 2023 by jessica Leave a Comment

WARDROBE
See this year’s sartorial additions here.

  • Madewell poplin ruffle a-line midi dress (also available here) – This is, without a doubt, my favorite clothing purchase this summer. I love how light and airy it is for the hottest summer days (which is needed during this heat wave). Plus, it has pockets! It runs large, so you’ll need to go down at least one size. It’s also available in a couple of solid colors.
  • Boden printed notch-neck top – I first ordered this in the yellow, but it had more of a greenish tint that wasn’t flattering with my skin tone. I loved the cut, though, and reordered in the blue and it’s lovely! The shape is forgiving, but drapes well so it doesn’t look like a sack. It’s a lightweight cotton with metallic threads woven throughout making it airy enough for summer. It’s also cute with jeans for when the weather starts to cool again.

HOUSEHOLD

  • Schoolhouse Electric ‘Isaac’ desk lamp – You know I’m a sucker for Schoolhouse — especially their lighting. I’ve been eyeing this lamp in that pretty vintage green shade since it debuted, but I had been waiting for a sale since $400 for a desk lamp seemed a bit steep, no matter how great the quality may be. I finally snagged it earlier this month for 30% off and I couldn’t be more delighted with it. A note of warning, though, if you move the position of your lamp a lot, this isn’t for you. The arm requires you to release the tension in the joint and retighten it.
  • West Elm linen pillowcases – These pillowcases are a fun contrast to the quilt I purchased for summer. I’m using them decoratively rather than finding a coordinating sham.

Life Lately & On the Right Foot

July 24, 2023 by jessica Leave a Comment

Happy Monday! Here are a few snapshots over the past few weeks (clockwise starting with upper left): a lakeside bike ride; a drink at Turnkey; at the Capitol for the summer Concerts on the Square series; loving how this glaze turned out on a bowl; added some edging and mulch to the front of our house; trying donuts at Zippy Lube, a coffee, donuts, and fried chicken place in a former auto shop.

It’s the season of frozen drinks! Here’s a history of blenders in bars.

How to stop worrying about work while you’re on vacation.

Barbie’s Dreamhouse through the years.

This Etsy shop has seriously cute lamps and lampshades.

Which clutter type are you?

The only thing I’m considering from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.

I made these curry noodles last week and they’re perfect when you want comfort food, but make it spicy.

This family has managed to make a container home look enviable — and just look at that outdoor fireplace!

Enjoy the week!

Things I Bought & Loved in June

June 28, 2023 by jessica Leave a Comment

WARDROBE
See this year’s sartorial additions here.

  • H&M linen t-shirt – I love this t-shirt on hot days but be aware that it shrinks in length even when washing on cold in the delicate cycle and line drying it. I went with my typical size medium at H&M, which still allow for a looser fit. It still has relaxed fit after laundering, just a tad shorter. Consider sizing up if you have a long torso.
  • J.Crew sparkly waterfall earrings – I had overlooked these online, but adored them in person. They’re large and incredibly sparkly, which will be fun when the holiday season rolls around again. They’re a great buy on sale.

HOUSEHOLD

  • Schoolhouse ‘Stillwater’ floral quilt – I just adored this quilt when it debuted and had it on my wish list since, peeking at it every so often and then talking myself out of it since it’s a pricier piece. I gave in this month when our down comforter proved to be just too hot for summer. It’s generously sized and perfectly lightweight without sacrificing quality.
  • Julie Cloutier double bowl – Another piece that was on my long-term wish list made its way into my home this month. I’m not even sure where I first saw Julie’s work, but I immediately fell for her double bowl — perfect for snacking on cherries or olives; just put the pit in the tiny attached bowl! Julie had taken a break from throwing these forms and just recently started taking orders for them again.
  • Crate & Barrel x Athena Calderone pillbox throw pillow – This is not a comfortable throw pillow. Rather, it’s a beautiful decorative piece. My only qualm is that it doesn’t actually have a zipper as the product details suggest. The tags are sewn on the outside. One is easy to tear off, but the other needs a seam ripper. I haven’t tried it yet because I can’t tell if the tag is sewn on with its own small piece of thread or if it’s in the actual seam of the pillow. Either way, it’s a gorgeous pillow and I love the pillbox shape. It coordinates well with the floral quilt on our bed.
  • Loam ‘Community Garden’ candle – I picked up this candle at a small shop in central Wisconsin over the weekend. It’s smells just like a fresh, sweet summer garden. I’m happy to report that the scent is just as pretty when its lit and the fragrance throws throughout the room.

On the Right Foot: My Summer Candle, Caring for Hydrangeas, a Must-Have Summer Dress & More!

June 26, 2023 by jessica Leave a Comment

Pictured clockwise from the upper left: added a foxglove to our yard; I made this rhubarb cake and it’s incredible; spending lazy weekends outside on the deck; stopped by Horseradish Kitchen + Market in Princeton, Wisc. over the weekend while we were up at Dave’s family’s lake house and had the kimchi-packed Korean nachos; bought another mock orange to put in our front yard; Lily loves the new quilt as much as we do.

Speaking of that quilt, Schoolhouse is having an incredible sale right now. I took it as a sign to order the desk lamp I’ve been crushing on.

Loving this easy summer dress. The green-and-white stripes sold me!

Things I Bought & Loved Recently + $20 Discount to East Fork Pottery

May 18, 2023 by jessica Leave a Comment

You know how sometimes the shopping gods smile down on you? That was the past six weeks for me. It felt like everything I tried on was a home run and I had no qualms about adding them to my closet, rounding out my spring/summer wardrobe for the year.

The only non-sartorial item I bought recently is that gorgeous East Fork Pottery bowl. It’s the perfect size for a bag of popcorn or serving a side dish. I just love it so much. They also have the best mugs that we use every day for coffee. They don’t have an affiliate program or any incentive for sharing this, but they do offer a $20 coupon that customers can share with their friends. Just use this link and it’ll take $20 off your first purchase.

WARDROBE
See this year’s sartorial additions here.

  • J.Crew ruched bandeau one-piece swimsuit – We’re going to Miami next week and having a oceanside trip on the books was reason enough to add a new bathing suit to my collection. I just love the color and, as you can see above, blue is my must-have hue this year! I wear my regular size in this one.
  • J.Crew draped sarong in blue floral – This runs a bit large, but I still went with my regular size since it’s meant to drape. It can be worn around your hips as a skirt, or twist the ties up around your neck as a beach dress.
  • Amazon straw bag – This is such a cute carryall for summer. It’s lined in cotton so you don’t need to worry as much about the bag losing its shape. I’m not sure it’s totally worth the price given that the quality is what you’d expect for a budget Amazon find, but I love the size and that it fits comfortably over your shoulder.
  • H&M twist-detail dress – Don’t sleep on this dress, especially if you have a small chest — it’s beautiful and sexy and just so perfect for summer, especially since there’s enough coverage and support to go sans bra if you’re petite on top. I’m actually planning on wearing it for my birthday later this month! It runs a size small for H&M sizing, so definitely try a size up than what you usually opt for at the brand.
  • H&M voluminous balloon-sleeved blouse – I love a breezy long-sleeve blouse in the summer when my skin needs a break from the sun. This is cute tucked into jeans or worn loose with shorts. I went with my typical H&M size.
  • H&M linen shorts – These 100% linen shorts are a steal and are generous enough for women with hips.
  • H&M double-weave tunic dress – I adore this dress. It’s loose and comfortable for sweltering days, although I’ll wear a half-slip under it when wearing it as a dress instead of a coverup for extra coverage when the light hits it.
  • Abercrombie & Fitch high-neck linen-blend mini dress – When did A&F grow up?! This A-line dress is perfection. I’m 5’6″ and it hits an inch or so above the knee. It’s roomy and feels well made. Plus, there are pockets! It runs loose, but not enough to size down.
  • Rothy’s slip-on sneaker – I’m a sucker for these slip-on sneakers and added this neutral to my collection for summer. I go up a half-size in Rothy’s sneakers and wear a 7.5 instead of my usual 7.
  • Ann Taylor wide cuff swing jacket – I love a swing jacket and just had to have this modern take on a trench coat. I went with my typical medium. The midsection is roomy, but that’s by design. You need to make sure you get the right fit for your shoulders.
  • Zara printed short dress – This dress isn’t the best quality, but I decided to keep it because it’s an easy option with a pair of black flats for work. (While we’re still mostly remote, we’ve been going back in-person a bit more often again.)

HOUSEHOLD

  • East Fork Bowl – This is such a beautiful bowl that you’ll have forever. While it’s called the “Popcorn Bowl” because it fits an entire bag of microwave popcorn, it’s the perfect mid-size bowl for side dishes.

I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
