Windowpane

Windowpane-Dress-7

If you’ve been following along on Instagram, you already know I fell in love with this dress Friday afternoon. I’m so crazy about it, in fact, that I wore it to a baby shower on Saturday and again on Sunday to run a few errands and stop at an open house. It’s technically a tunic and meant to be worn with pants or leggings (pfft…), but I’m 5’7″ and it’s definitely long enough to wear as a dress. (Don’t worry, I double checked by layering my favorite black skirt underneath and the hemlines met.) It’s also the softest sweater dress I have ever worn. The cream and black colorway is sold out online, but our store had the full size run.

The Weekend Guide

GO
The beauty of Paris Fashion Week is perfectly captured in just 20 behind-the-scenes photos.

BAKE
If you’re already tired of pumpkin pie and the #PSL, try this pumpkin panna cotta tart with a gingersnap macaroon crust.

LEARN
I’m so proud of a local high school that’s doing away with homecoming kings and queens in an effort to be more inclusive of its entire student body. [Insert praising hands emoji here.]

DRINK
Many of you know I’m a beer girl and I’m beyond excited to have Kate Spade beer glasses for our at-home happy hours.

MARBLEIZE
Sure, you could put those mini pumpkins out in a bowl and call it a day, but it’s way more Instagrammable to marbleize them with old nail polish.

BECOME
An Elle editor tried her hand at becoming an Instagram celebrity. Here’s what the experience taught her.

FIVE UNDER $55

EARLIER THIS WEEK
I daydreamed about a London getaway in my plaid coat.
I shared six items that caught my eye.
I admitted to wearing my new LBD more often than I should.
I daydreamed about our next trip.
I purchased a pair of ankle boots and a grey hooded cape.
I put these on my wishlist, but purchasing sandals seems silly in the fall.

Ruffled

BR-Black-Dress-2

Well, my hair was curled when I left the house … not so much after a few minutes standing outside in the wind! Oh, well, ’tis the reality of blogging, right? The other reality is that I’ve been wearing this dress at least once a week since purchasing it at the beginning of September. It’s such an easy piece to throw on for those “I have nothing to wear!” days and nothing is as forgiving as an a-line swing dress for “not-so-skinny” days. This is basically how I’ve been wearing it on the weekends (bring on the big jewels!). For work, I usually layer a button-down shirt underneath (love this and this) and slip on my favorite flats.

The Coveted

CurrentlyCoveting-100415

This week, I’m coveting:

  • A chic playsuit that makes getting dressed a breeze.
  • Rivets, studs, and mirrors make these sandals a work of art. (Here’s another pair of velvet sandals with a gem-encrusted heel for under $100.)
  • A cozy pair of wool-lined gloves. Buy them now and be glad you have them when the weather gets even colder.
  • A plaid coat. Even though I already have a plaid coat for fall (seen here), I’m crazy about this navy version. I also found this red buffalo plaid hooded coat that’s on sale for $60 and a blue plaid alternative for $70.
  • This windowpane scarf. I’m not terribly fond of the blanket scarf trend, but this one is cute enough to make me want to give it a whirl.
  • A stunning double-horn pendant. It also comes in black and cream.

London Calling

Tory-Buch-Coat-7

When I purchase a new item, I know it’s a keeper when I start daydreaming about the places I want to wear it. I’m not talking about everyday locations, like work, or even special occasions, like a wedding. Instead, I find myself itching to book a plane ticket to debut the piece in a different city or country. This coat is destined for London, which isn’t a surprise given that Tory Burch’s inspiration for her 2015 pre-fall collection was the English city circa 1960. Nestled next to the coat in my suitcase would be the ultra comfortable Naturalizer “Jarrett” ankle boots. You already know how much I love flats, but sometimes a standard-issue ballet flat seems a little dull. These ankle boots have just enough attitude to make an outfit more interesting without sacrificing comfort. They run a hair large, which I didn’t mind. I’ll appreciate the extra room for tights and cozy socks once the mercury dips.

It’s so nice to be home after a whirlwind week. It’s so nice to be home after a whirlwind week. We flew out to Philadelphia last Friday for a few days of exploring. It was our first time in the City of Brotherly Love and we loved every minute of it from the architecture to the restaurants, and most of all: the welcoming and friendly people. After that, we had one night at home before a flight to Denver to celebrate my cousin’s wedding. We got back to Madison late last night and have spent the day puttering around the house, getting caught up on laundry, grocery shopping, harvesting the season’s first tomatoes from the garden, and admiring just how much the hydrangeas have grown in the course of a week.
I always get a kick out of comparing views of our I always get a kick out of comparing views of our home today to the photos I took during our home inspection. (Swipe to see our main bedroom then!) While I knew the house had potential, it was hard to look past some of the owner’s “design” choices. Though, it looks like the room was destined to have a warm-toned quilt. 😂

P.S. @schoolhouse just released new colors of their popular Stillwater Floral Quilt!

And, for those interested, I’ve linked my bedroom items here: https://liketk.it/5iC8R

It also inadvertently became the weekend I made Dave eat a cheeseburger every day, between @redhotranchchicago, @eatmottst, and @smallcheval. There are worst ways to spend a weekend.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.
