Sweater Weather

September 19, 2016 by jessica 8 Comments

tobi-orange-sweater-dress-10-2

September is by far my favorite month with the crisp morning air that turns into warm summer-like temperatures by day’s end, the abundance of pumpkin spiced everything (although I can’t get on board with the overly sweet Starbucks #PSL), and an excuse to finally don a sweater. (It always comes back to the clothes, doesn’t it?) I’ve been obsessed with this mini sweater dress from Tobi since its arrival. It’s the perfect thing for chillier mornings that doesn’t leave me overheated by day’s end, and it’s appropriate for work. In fact, this is probably the best example of my typical office attire that I’ve ever posted on the blog. I’m a one-trick pony with a dress, flats, and a pendant!

You can save 50% off your first purchase at Tobi by signing up for their email list. (You should get a pop-up window when you click through.) Here’s a link to the dress I’m wearing. One word of caution: you’ll want to wear a half-slip underneath. The knit isn’t very tight and you can see the shape of your legs if you’re back lit. Just something to keep in mind if you’re going to wear it to work like I’m planning to. The black maxi dress I wore last week is also from Tobi and it’s part of their 50% off dress sale through Sept. 21 with code DRDR. I sized up for both items.

BR-Black-Dress-2

Well, my hair was curled when I left the house … not so much after a few minutes standing outside in the wind! Oh, well, ’tis the reality of blogging, right? The other reality is that I’ve been wearing this dress at least once a week since purchasing it at the beginning of September. It’s such an easy piece to throw on for those “I have nothing to wear!” days and nothing is as forgiving as an a-line swing dress for “not-so-skinny” days. This is basically how I’ve been wearing it on the weekends (bring on the big jewels!). For work, I usually layer a button-down shirt underneath (love this and this) and slip on my favorite flats.

Brace Yourself

It’s now day six with a fractured foot. Some things are getting easier (like motoring around on crutches), but some things are increasingly frustrating (like the bruising on my side from the crutches). This is my first time breaking a bone and I wasn’t sure what to expect (so much crying!). I’ll share my observations later this week, along with tips in case you ever have the misfortune of fracturing your own foot.

On a more upbeat note, this is my final post with Cara for our #WaysToYosca series. This pendant and the coordinating pair of earrings (seen in this post) have been an integral part of my early summer wardrobe. I tend to fall in love with a new piece of jewelry and wear it for weeks on end with different outfits. These two pieces from Gerard Yosca’s “Mesa” collection are no different and I’m sure I’ll be wearing them well into autumn with the upcoming season’s Native American trend.

If you’ve fallen in love with anything from the Mesa collection–or anything on Gerard’s site, for that matter–take 20% off with code MESA20.

I wasn’t kidding when I said I was wearing this Gerard Yosca pendant nonstop. It has already become my favorite piece to mix and match with my new summer staples, like the chambray dress I picked up at Express. It’s already sold out, which is a bummer because it’s a pretty solid knockoff of the AG Jeans x Alexa Chung “Honey” dress from earlier this season. The only drawback, as you can see, is that it gets awfully wrinkly! It was perfect when we left the house, but looked like this after 15 minutes in the car. Oh well. I’ll just pile on more jewelry next time to distract the eye! Visit Cara’s blog post today to see how she’s wearing a piece from Gerard Yosca’s latest collection in our #WaysToYosca series. As an added bonus, Gerard is offering a 20% discount with code Mesa20!

In other news, I fractured my foot today. My foot fell asleep while I was working on this post. I needed to start getting ready for work and tried to walk on it. I came down the wrong way, heard a terrible popping noise, and collapsed in excruciating pain. The Urgent Care doctor said it’s a fracture at the base of my little toe, but I still need to go to orthopedics for a follow-up appointment. I’m in a plastic boot/cast and can’t put weight on it. It sucks. On the bright side, who’s up for an outfit photo with a cast and crutches?! 😉 Seriously, though, if anyone has tips on using crutches, I’d love to hear them. I opted to sit on a flight of stairs and scoot up rather than use them. It’s going to be a long month.

As I mentioned last week, I’m completely smitten with Gerard Yosca’s latest collection, Mesa. Even though the collection is on trend with its Native American influences and muted southwest color palette, the pieces are remarkably versatile, which is precisely what I look for when I choose a new piece of jewelry to add to my collection. I love conversation pieces that mix seamlessly into my wardrobe and can be worn with multiple outfits. Over the next two weeks, Cara and I will be sharing how we wear our favorite Gerard pieces. See her first look with this gorgeous pendant here. If you also have a piece of jewelry from one of his collections, be sure to tag it #WaysToYosca on Instagram to share how you wear–and love–your Gerard Yosca jewelry!

A small moment of peace from the past weekend. I A small moment of peace from the past weekend.

I feel like I’ve been doomscrolling since the news broke of SCOTUS’ decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. My emotions run the gamut from sadness to frustration to unadulterated rage. I’m deeply disgusted by conservatives and evangelicals, but especially by liberals who supported Bernie Sanders and refused to vote for Hillary Clinton at such a crucial moment in our history. Did you know that 12% of Sanders’ primary election supporters voted for Trump in the general election? In Wisconsin alone, 51,000 of them voted for Trump — a state Trump would win by just 22,000 votes.

Your vote matters. It matters in national elections, statewide elections, and local elections. It’s crucial that Democrats organize as strategically as conservatives did and restore reproductive rights.

In the meantime, donate your time, talent, or treasure to help those facing an unwanted pregnancy. @thecut has a great list on their site with organizations to support in states likely to prohibit abortion. I’ve donated to @plannedparenthoodwi.
Reveal day is finally here! It’s been a long pro Reveal day is finally here! It’s been a long process that started back in April 2020 with a kitchen ceiling leak that was attributed to water leaking from our tub faucet and working its way through the floor and into the kitchen. Our bathroom was never anything to look at (before photos on the feed), but the leak really accelerated our plans for a full bathroom renovation when timelines — and budgets — allowed. It feels a bit surreal to have it done and I don’t think I’ll ever stop admiring it whenever I walk past!

It wasn’t always easy to navigate the stressful moments, but the end result is worth it. I feel like I’m at a luxury hotel every time I shower! (And it sure beats showering with the spiders in our [basically unfinished] basement bathroom. It was like camping in our own home for the past six weeks — and I very much hate camping!)
