On the Right Foot: United Expands Its International Routes, 12 Turkey Recipes, Wisconsin’s Favorite Cocktail & More

October 21, 2024 by jessica Leave a Comment

Above: I finally saw the Northern lights for the first time!

Declassified army photos from the ’70s and ’80s that look like they could be plucked from high fashion today. (Just scroll down to the section with the hats and ear coverings!)

There’s still time to order Halloween decorations.

Loving the tile work in this home.

An ode to Wisconsin’s favorite cocktail.

United is expanding its international routes to cities that are typically more difficult to travel to.

My most recent purchases. (I’ve been living in that grey sweater!)

Plus, a roundup of covetable finds.

I saw these tin star ornaments on the Schoolhouse site last week, and I’m pretty sure they’re sourced from this Canadian factory. They’re cheaper on the Pietersma Tinworks site, even after shipping fees. You can also find the tin icicle ornaments that Schoolhouse also carries. They’re wonderful for filling in gaps on the Christmas tree and reflecting light.

Thanksgiving will be here before we know it. If you’re cooking a turkey, here are 12 recipes to consider.

Investigating Italian Renaissance paintings to rediscover long-forgotten fruit.

A list of perennials you should cut back in the fall.

Enjoy your week!

Notable Purchases, Vol. 5

October 9, 2024 by jessica Leave a Comment

  • Sezane ‘Lauren’ sweater – This sweater has already become one of my favorites for autumn. I was a little concerned about yak wool being too itchy, but it’s softer than anticipated. And, it hasn’t pilled yet! The shape of the sweater is a bit oversized and fits similar to how it does in this image with the hem falling right above the hip and slight bracelet sleeves. If you want it to fit like it does in the photo above, then you’ll need to go up a size. I love it so much that I’m likely to purchase the other two colors before the season ends.
  • M&S ridged small hoop earrings – I’ve been into sculptural silver jewelry this season and bought these while I was in London. They remind me of this pair by Jennifer Zeuner.
  • Amazon chunky hoop earrings – These are a great way to dabble in the silver trend if you’re on the fence about moving away from gold jewelry this season. I bought the 25mm size. They look great in person and are lightweight for all-day wear.
  • Madewell sling crossbody bag – You may recall that I bought this bag in straw earlier this year. It’s such a great size to hold all of your essentials (including a case for sunglasses and a backup phone charger). I wore the straw one in Barcelona when I didn’t have my DSLR in tow. Given how much use I got out of it, I bought the all-leather version in advance of our trip to London and have been using it every day since.
  • Adidas ‘Samba’ sneakers – I bought these in the “wonder taupe” colorway. It’s a fantastic neutral color. I find that Adidas runs true to size.
  • Gap ‘CashSoft’ crewneck sweater – While red isn’t my favorite color, I can appreciate the “unexpected red” theory for home and wardrobe. Plus, now I work at the University of Wisconsin with its red-and-white brand colors, so it’s basically workwear. The sweater runs true to size.
  • Leather Hole Puncher (not pictured) – My beloved Paravel travel backpack always hung down too low on my back and I finally bought a leather hole puncher to fix that. This set has multiple hole sizes to choose from. It punched through cleanly and it looks more professional than just using an awl.

On the Right Foot: Pumpkin Bread, a Beautiful Satin Shift Dress, Why We’re Fascinated with Other People’s Homes & More!

October 7, 2024 by jessica Leave a Comment

We just got back from a weeklong trip to London and the medieval city of York. We’ve visited London in the past, which freed up time to explore more than just the top ten tourist attractions — although it was our first time seeing Elizabeth Tower and Big Ben without scaffolding! Travel diaries coming soon!

I’m loving the new Schoolhouse x Clare V. collaboration, especially this catchall tray. See some of the pieces styled in Clare Vivier’s home here.

A psychologist shares insight into why we’re so fascinated with glimpses into others’ homes.

Four ways to salvage a bad day.

Learn more about Claude Monet’s obsession with water lilies.

A roundup of sculptural gold and silver jewelry for autumn.

This is my favorite recipe for pumpkin bread. I’ve always skipped adding the pumpkin seeds on top, though.

I’ll be ordering this red and white offset striped pillow for holiday decorating.

36 Hours in Edinburgh.

History of the bra.

The shift dress that J.Crew released in linen this summer is back for fall in a beautiful satin fabric.

Enjoy your week!

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.

While it claims to be the most haunted place in Europe and is dubbed the city of a thousand ghosts, we only encountered the wire-mesh sculptures of Ghosts in the Gardens (@the_york_bid) and the family of souvenir ghosts I brought home from @yorkghostmerchants.
