We stained the front porch!

August 28, 2020 by jessica Leave a Comment

Sherwin Williams SuperDeck Wet Clay

You may remember last year’s front porch project when we replaced our screen door. And, now, we’re another step closer to completing the front porch now that we’ve stained the floor!

The process wasn’t without its frustrations, though, as you’ll see below. But first, let’s start with a before photo of the front of our house. (Side note: you’ll notice that the siding looks different in just about every photo depending on the light. The most true color is what you see above. It’s also in desperate need of a powerwash.)

Two year update: See how the stain held up here!

Progress Report: Front Porch

Okay, so this isn’t a real before image when the entire bottom portion of the house was unpainted wood and we still had the old storm door, but this gives you an idea of what we’re working with. Ultimately, we’d like to give our house a full face lift. The original front porch that went along the front of the house had been closed off years ago. We’d like to add more windows (vertical, double-hung) to give the home more appropriate historic curb appeal. Plus, that door to the right is permanently sealed. It would have led to the porch at some point. We need to have that removed and scrounge up enough siding remnants to close it in from the outside. Whenever we’re able to do this, we’ll redo the front stairs entirely. They’re someone’s DIY project and they’re not even deep enough for kickboards. But, as with everything, these lofty plans cost a lot of money and we needed to do something to make it cuter in the meantime.

We had left the wood raw for the last three years as we hemmed and hawed over the the pros and cons of paint versus stain. I preferred the opacity of paint, but everyone seemed to be pushing us toward stain because of its durability. It wasn’t until earlier this summer that I discovered that Sherwin-Williams carries an opaque stain, which is the best of both worlds!

I was a bit cavalier about my selection of colors, holding up the color chips to the siding and went with my first impulse: Gray Birch. From the sample, it seemed to be a warm, light gray. Clearly, I wrong:

There were so many blue undertones to this stain that it appeared baby blue next to the color of our siding. I probably should have stopped earlier, but I kept wondering if it would dry differently or that I’d like it if I really gave it a fair shot. Instead, I hated it more and more. At one point, I thought I ordered the wrong color and peeled the chip off the card to hold against the applied stain. A perfect match. It’s just that blue.

(P.S. We’d eventually stain those stair risers when we figured out the right color.)

Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck Wet Clay vs. Flagstone

After that fiasco, I had about a half-gallon left and talked to Sherwin-Williams to see how I should proceed. They told me that the wood could really only hold one more coat of stain before it would just chip off and ruin the integrity of the product. They stained it deeper, getting closer to the King’s Canyon color and gave me a paint stick dipped in the hue to hold up against the house. That ended up having purple undertones, so I switched gears entirely and picked a new area of the color chart to try, opting for Wet Clay (above, left) and Flagstone. (They weren’t able to do samples of these in stain, but were able to give me paint to use on a piece of poster board to check against the house.) These colors had more yellow to the base and ended up being really great options. (Let that be a lesson to you to always get samples first!) I went with Wet Clay and the second coat of applied stain completely covered the first without any hints of color coming through.

Note: I’m unable to find the Wet Clay stain color on the Sherwin-Williams website. The color code is SW 3083.

Sherwin Williams SuperDeck Wet Clay

I am so happy with how it turned out! I can’t speak to the durability of the color until we get through a Wisconsin winter, but I did try to chip at it with my fingernail and it held tight.

Two year update: See how the stain held up here!

So, next on the list is doing something about those iron railings (might replace, might just spray paint them matte black with Rust-Oleum), touching up the white paint, and replacing the sconces. In full disclosure, I don’t mind the shape of the sconces, but they are so incredibly flimsy and cheap — and they’re starting to rust.

Things I Bought and Loved in August

August 26, 2020 by jessica Leave a Comment

Another month of pandemic shopping is in the books and, as you can tell, I’m continuing to embrace casual dressing and putting the money I would have spent on my wardrobe toward our home. It’s just hard to justify most clothing purchases right now when we rarely leave the house and I don’t have a reason to dress up — and then there’s the matter of the #PandemicPounds that have crept on, which doesn’t exactly leave me eager to shop for new clothes! (C’est la vie!) Don’t get me wrong, though, I love this shift in priorities and putting resources into our home to make it unquestionably our favorite place to be — which is essential when there’s no end in sight to the pandemic.

CLOTHING
See all of this year’s sartorial additions here.

  • J.Crew linen-blend sweater in navy – I wanted this sweater to be oversize and slouchy, and first ordered a medium which is what I wear in the brand’s Tippi sweater. It was massive. I reordered it in a small when it became final sale and it’s a much better fit while still being boxy.
  • J.Crew seaside shorts in loden – These shorts are fantastic for anyone with curvy hips and thighs. They do get a bit stretched out during the day, but not terribly so where you can’t get a second wear out of them. If you tend to be on the cusp of two sizes, go down one. Otherwise, stick with your regular size.

HOME DECOR & IMPROVEMENT

  • Vintage tallboy dresser (see it here) – We actually bought this piece back in May from Cream City Restoration in Milwaukee after seeing the pre-restoration version on their Instagram story. It was originally a yellow-orange-ish oak color and we had it stained to a dark walnut to coordinate better with the rest of our dining room furniture. It’s perfect for storing things like linens, serving pieces, and Dave’s work-from-home items so they don’t clutter the table at night!
  • Target amber glass candleholder in small (not pictured above) – I have these grandiose plans of lighting candles while we eat dinner this fall. While that’s unlikely to actually happen, I just adored these candlestick holders from Target. Keep an eye out at your local store; they’re great quality. Alternatively, there are some vintage amber-glass options on eBay right now! I love this one and this one.
  • Outdoor umbrella in black and white stripe & stand (umbrella available in a 9-foot size here) – Our neighbors removed a mature maple tree from their yard last year and we had no idea how much late-afternoon sun it had blocked from our deck! It was entirely too sweltering to be outside in the direct sun after work (and, c’mon, you know how fair my skin is!), so this was an essential item to make our 5 o’clock patio happy hours much more enjoyable. We opted for this one because the price was better than most umbrellas we found. It’s holding up really well so far. We did have to tighten the screws in the base when we received it, but that’s an easy fix.
  • Candlewick trimmer (not pictured above) – This seems like one of those items people claim is essential, but is really just a waste of money. It’s not. It’s been great for trimming wicks in candles that are too low for a traditional pair of scissors. This particular wick trimmer has a nice weight to it and seems like it’ll last.
  • Arus plaid throw – I included this in a recent roundup and ended up purchasing the light green plaid one for our back deck. While we don’t need it now thanks to the high temperatures and humidity, I know I’m going to enjoy having it around come fall. I don’t think it’s chic enough for indoor use with its chunky fringe trim and whip-stitch edges, but it’s perfect for cozying up outside.
  • Liberty three-prong hook in black (not pictured above) – Finally, I bought a few vintage-inspired hooks for Dave’s closet. These are a no-brainer at just $4 each.

On the Right Foot: The House Dress, Ice Cream Cocktails, Colorize B&W Photos, & More!

August 24, 2020 by jessica Leave a Comment

Christian Siriano’s home embraces modernist design. It’s not my preferred style overall, aside from that serene bedroom above, but it’s fun to look at!

Artist Juliana Lupacchino is my new favorite Instagram follow.

I’m all about simple, beautiful handbags and this one fits the bill. Better yet, the caramel-brown version has a hot pink lining!

This is an interesting piece on how COVID-19 is impacting the beauty industry. In it, the author shares that lipstick sales have dwindled during the pandemic, which isn’t surprising when it’s just going to be smeared inside of a mask. (Granted, I still wear it for my Zoom calls.)

I added this set of face masks to my growing collection.

All hail the house dress, the quintessential fashion item of 2020.

It’s no secret that Wisconsinites are, um, devoted to their drinking culture and one of its finest examples is the ice cream cocktail. We’ve perfected the boozy dessert drink and you can, too. (Brandy Alexanders are my favorite, but I can’t seem to perfect a dairy-free alternative now that I can’t have lactose.)

Clearly our house shoes need an autumn-upgrade with these slip-on mules.

I shared a link to this inexpensive blanket in a recent roundup and have since purchased it in the lighter green plaid. It’s perfect for cooler evenings outside or by a campfire.

Did you see this amazing tool that colorizes old black-and-white photos? It’s time to pull out those family albums!

Add to cart: the sculptural jewelry from designer Hyun Yu. These earrings are stunning.

I’ve been dreaming about the cheddar and green chile scones we had at Bearded Heart Coffee in Door County (travel guide coming soon!). I’m going to try my hand at making them with this recipe.

In case you missed it:

  • Ten accent mirrors I love.
  • We stained our front porch!
  • That morning light.

Roundup: 10 Accent Mirrors

August 19, 2020 by jessica Leave a Comment

Target Brass Circle Mirror

If you were stopping by today for my picks from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, I’m sorry to disappoint. I haven’t had much interest in shopping the sale this year (even if I’m intrigued by this coat), so instead you’re getting a roundup of 10 accent mirrors! This was inspired by a conversation I had with a friend last week when she reached out for my opinion on two mirrors she had purchased for her home. After a few texts back and forth, we decided that neither mirror was quite right and set to the internet to find alternatives. It seemed silly to have all of that research relinquished to a string of iMessages, so I thought I’d share them with you along with a few others that caught my eye. After all, sprucing up your place is one of the best pandemic distractions to have on the heels of autumn when we’ll all be spending a lot more time indoors.

On the Right Foot: $30 Earrings to Buy Now, Cross-Stitching, Travel as a Mindset & More!

August 17, 2020 by jessica Leave a Comment

Link Roundup
source

Happy Monday! What were you up to this weekend? We spent the better part of it staining our front porch. After living here for three years (time flies!), we finally bit the bullet and decided we need to do something about our [lack of] curb appeal. The first stain color read baby blue against our dark gray siding, so we needed to pivot and I’m in love with the second color! A progress report post is coming your way soon, along with brainstorming notes and roundups for the rest of the entry.

Before we continue, you may as well add these $30 semiprecious-stone earrings to your cart now. I can’t pick a favorite color!

I found this article from the Times fascinating. The piece profiles designer Scott Sternberg (currently of Entireworld, formerly Band of Outsiders) to explore the decline of the fashion industry and how it was accelerated by the novel coronavirus. It’s a longer read, but a good one.

Is social media killing our confidence?

Are we past the banana bread stage of quarantine? If not, this recipe is delicious. I added a teaspoon of cinnamon.

If you’re growing tired of wearing athleisure day in and day out, switch things up for an equally comfortable midi dress.

Traveling is a mindset.

One of our closets needed some hooks and I snagged a few of these vintage-inspired ones. They’re just $4 and the quality is good.

How 12 female cookbook authors changed the way we eat.

It looks like the novel coronavirus isn’t letting up any time soon, so I’m adding another old-timey domestic hobby to my roster: cross-stitching. My mom taught me how to cross-stitch when I was young and I really enjoyed it, even if I never wanted to display the finished work since it tends to skew too farmhouse for my tastes. Regardless, I need more activities that keep me away from a screen and I’m starting with this pattern. (I’m going to skip the birds.)

I loved these musings on how our homes might change in response to COVID-19.

I’m crazy about the colors of this striped sweater.

I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
