On the Right Foot: Behind the Set of White Lotus, Swimmer-Recommended Razors, An Artist to Follow & More!

Carolyn Misterek is the latest artist I’m following on Instagram.

Hate to break it to you, but your cotton tote isn’t that eco-friendly.

Have you watched White Lotus yet? Here’s how the set designers created spaces that accentuated the characters’ story arcs.

We’re in the final stages of selecting a contractor for our bathroom remodel. I came across this helpful list of questions to ask their references.

I’m going to order this art print for our dining room. (I prefer it in the “blue skies” colorway with a walnut wood frame.)

New Barbie dolls include a COVID-19 vaccine developer and other women scientists.

I stayed at four Graduate Hotel properties last month — here’s what I thought of them!

24 plants that will thrive in a bathroom.

Isn’t the jacket in last week’s “The Coveted” so good? That shade of green is perfect!

Olympic swimmers share their favorite razors for getting an ultra smooth shave.

Inspiration Behind Lele Sadoughi’s Peking Opera Collection + Discount Code!

April 7, 2016 by jessica 4 Comments

Lele-Sadoughi-Lily-Earrings5

A few weeks ago, I added Lele Sadoughi’s gorgeous Maraca necklace to my jewelry collection (it’s still available here), so you can imagine how thrilled I was when the designer sent over the Crystal Lily earrings I had on my wish list since their debut. The earrings are absolutely stunning, as you’ll see in the photos here and in a future outfit post, and I was curious to learn more about them. Below, you’ll find insight into Lele’s design process and the inspiration behind the luxe Peking Opera collection.

But first, here’s a bit more about Lele Sadoughi from the designer herself:

“Launching the jewelry at J Crew and directing a team at Tory Burch were both amazing experiences.  I was fortunate to work for companies that liked my aesthetic and welcomed some risks that I took. I think the reason that J Crew jewelry has been such a success is because what I like and what J Crew represents was a good combination. With my line, I am able to design for the girl that wants to stand out and is not afraid to wear something that might elicit a conversation.  Working for large brands, you always begin with the fabrics and prints because the mills have the longest lead time.  Therefore, I started with colors, textures, and prints.   I like to think I learned about the big picture; about a feeling and a mood.  Once you research a world with a specific mood, time, and place, the pieces are easier to design. I love to have a theme and story for each season. Now, I am able to create my own storyboards and really initiate the concept for each season.

“My family just moved into a 6 story townhouse in West Chelsea and we moved our offices to the top floor. It is very sun filled and calm, and just high enough to be separated from the kids downstairs. With a 1 year old and 3 year old at home, I am so fortunate to get work done and run downstairs to have lunch with my kids. I can schedule meetings with an hour break in between to make time to run out to the park. My days are very different. Sometimes I take my son to school and start work around noon. Other days, I start with a meeting or press appointment and do not make it downstairs until the afternoon.”

Lele was also very kind to extend a 20% discount to Bedknobs & Baubles readers. Head to Lele Sadoughi’s website and use code BEDKNOBSANDBAUBLES to take 20% off of everything — including sale items! Then come back and let me know what you bought!

Psst…if you love the Lily earrings as much as I do, snag them for nearly half off at Bloomingdale’s right now. They’re on sale and you’ll save an extra 25% with code FRIENDS through April 10. (Thanks to Jenn for the hot tip during our conversation on this post yesterday!)

Weekend Links 05.11.18

Happy Friday! It’s supposed to be a drizzly, cold weekend here in Madison, which is the perfect excuse to tackle a few household projects. I’m most excited about continuing to paint and repair our doors and remove layers of paint from the antique hardware. If you watched my Instagram story yesterday, you’ll know that I boiled a painted door hinge in water yesterday and it worked like a charm (with a little bit of elbow grease to get the stubborn bits of paint to release). I’m going to post a tutorial once I get the technique down pat because few things are more satisfying than restoring a piece of the house instead of replacing it. (Just think of these home-related posts as the “Bedknobs” portion of my blog title!)

I hope you have a wonderful weekend and a happy Mother’s Day!

Weekend Links:

  • The best dressed at the Met Gala, and the best recreations.
  • Exploring the unregulated industry of trendy “healing” crystals.
  • A roundup of this year’s best sunscreen.
  • Could cannabis be the next post-workout recovery remedy?
  • The print on this dress is beautiful! It also comes in a one-shoulder top.
  • A collection inspired by the requisite makeup of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (you know them as the inspiration for “A League of One’s Own”).
  • I made this goat cheese and asparagus pasta last night. It was good, but definitely needed more asparagus, salt, and pepper. We added a few crumbles of feta on top because I only had four ounces of goat cheese on hand and the recipe called for five.
  • A selection of five often overlooked low-light plants for your home.  (I’m all about low-light plants that are nearly indestructible, like a ZZ plant.)
  • I have to get my driver’s license renewed this month and I’m really disappointed about it because I loved my last photo so much! Wisconsin’s latest IDs have grainy black and white photos, so I’m not sure if these tips for taking a great license photo will prove to be helpful, but it’s worth a shot!
  • These enamel dinner plates are perfect for outdoor entertaining. They’re available for order starting on Sunday! Can’t. Wait.

Finds Under $50:

  • Use this wood bead bag as a clutch. (The chain looks cheap, at least in the photos.)
  • The under-$50 dress I love gets a playful update with a flounced hem.
  • I’m showing my age, but does anyone else remember those jelly shoes we all had as kids? They were awful and left your feet so sweaty, but the material is making a comeback this year as a basket bag. Get one here, here, or here. (The last one is my favorite.) They’d be great for the farmers’ market.
  • These are the only earrings you’ll need for summer.
  • I can’t resist stripes, especially when they’re this cute.
  • The tie detail on this dress is perfection.

Earlier This Week:

  • Debuting a new wallet-friendly sundress.
  • A colorful collection of finds.
  • “Behind the Baubles” with the irreverent designs of Labulgara.
  • Floral favorites.

Weekend Links 03.02.18

Happy Friday! I couldn’t be happier that this week is wrapping up. I was in a funk for most of it and kind of crabby, which I’m sure is partly due to the transitional weather that seems to drag on when spring is tantalizingly close. On the happier side, I played hooky on Tuesday afternoon to enjoy temperatures that edged close to 60 degrees. I bought myself tulips, went for a two-and-a-half mile walk, and made headway on some blog ideas. This week also marks a personal accomplishment of losing 10 pounds since Thanksgiving. I started counting calories with the MyFitnessPal app at the beginning of the year, so I’m only 5.3 pounds down there, but I’m still really proud of myself. I’m hoping to lose another 10 pounds this year, so form-fitting clothing purchases will be put on the back burner during this time. But you know I’m crazy about the loose dresses, so I’m sure I’ll amass plenty of spring duds I can wear throughout the weight-loss period. 😉 How was your week?

Weekend Links:

  • My new favorite Twitter account.
  • Organization guru, Marie Kondo, collaborated with Cuyana on a collection of perfect jewelry travel cases.
  • Angela kicked off a new blog series where she features her favorite font finds of the month, including a freebie to download. (Don’t be surprised if you see that ‘Chloe’ font make an appearance on the blog.)
  • Obviously Christmas is a long way off, but I couldn’t help ordering these mules yesterday to pack away for the holiday season. Aren’t they ridiculous in the very best way? It’s basically the shoe version of an ugly sweater.
  • Here are 45 ideas for decorating a blank wall in your home. Plus, use Grace’s tip for affordable art! (We have a random doorway cut between our master bedroom and the guest room from when the house was a two-flat. The guest room was the kitchen and we had to remove cabinetry when we moved in. The master bedroom must have been the living room. It wouldn’t be so bad if the door frame was more than just haphazard two-by-fours and there was an actual door to separate the rooms. Anyway, we’re looking to close it off and add a shallow bookcase to the master bedroom side to display items. That list is coming in handy.)
  • An interview with Desiree Gruber with great advice on building your personal brand.
  • This vase is such a work of art.
  • Chanel is launching a pop-up beauty shop with so many Instagrammable moments. Swing by if you’re in L.A. at the beginning of March!
  • My optometrist keeps suggesting I consider LASIK because I’ve had stable vision for well over a decade. (I swear, he must get some sort of referral commission considering how many times he’s suggested it.) Julia’s experience with vision correction sounds like absolute hell and has put me in the “F* no” camp on that one.
  • Meet the designers behind some of the most striking book covers.

Finds Under $50:

  • Bow-topped slides in a pretty lavender hue.
  • A pretty pink sweater is the perfect piece for winter-to-spring weather.
  • I love that this phone case is inspired by a take-out bag.
  • If you really want to make a statement at your next cocktail soiree, bust out a vintage-inspired velvet turban.
  • This dramatic necklace will add a punch to your simplest dresses this spring.
  • Use code DIYUMSN to take 30% off slides that come in a fun blue glitter option or a multi-color stripe.

Earlier This Week:

  • Reaching for the classics when I feel uninspired.
  • This week’s most coveted items.
  • What I bought this month.
  • Behind the Baubles with Candy Shop Vintage.

It also inadvertently became the weekend I made Dave eat a cheeseburger every day, between @redhotranchchicago, @eatmottst, and @smallcheval. There are worst ways to spend a weekend.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.
