Holiday Finery

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]T[/dropcap]here’s so much pressure to buy a new holiday dress each year and I certainly succumbed, convincing myself that the holidays just wouldn’t be complete without a new satin or sequin frock. After hours of online searching (and a handful of returned rejects), I turned to my own closet and chose this simple black dress. I bought it last summer at Kohl’s and was grateful for the breezy style on those sweltering days. I even brought it to Belgium with me, wore it in Amsterdam, and donned it on the plane home. I never expected that it would be such a pretty canvas for Gerard Yosca’s holiday jewelry (check back tomorrow for a special holiday giveaway!). I added my favorite pumps and a matching mani for a bit of playfulness and made sure to adhere to each of Gerard’s tips for refined holiday dressing.

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]F[/dropcap]ew things are more exciting than new jewelry, especially when those gems come in the form of hammered metal with thoughtfully placed rhinestones, as in the case of Gerard Yosca’s newest collection. Appropriately named “Refinery” the pieces are a bit more understated than seasons past, but they’re no less eye catching. I could go on and on about the collection, but I think you’ll agree that it’s more meaningful to hear from Gerard himself about his inspiration, his thoughts on the statement piece and, for fun, what’s on his holiday wish list.

WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION BEHIND REFINERY?
Time for a fashion reboot. Dress a little more simply and grownup. I wanted a collection that reflected a taste for quality. And, I’m still feeling a ’70s jet setter influence.

WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE TRAJECTORY OF THE STATEMENT PIECE?
If everyone wears a big statement piece, all we see is noise. I love when someone stands out by dressing less obviously. Everything we say doesn’t require “!!!!!”. Save them for when you mean it. The big earring just feels particularly fresh right now.

HOW IS THE CHANGE IN SCALE REFLECTED IN THESE PIECES?
Most of the collection is really a lot smaller than a year ago! And I’ve used repetition of simple geometric shapes to make the pieces easy on the eyes.

FOR SOMEONE KNOWN FOR COLOR, WHY ALL METAL?
I thought I might be able to create pieces that would be grab and go if they were easier. I created the texture by hammering the metal with a ball tip I had filed down. Here, the texture really creates the interest that color would normally do.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WINTER LOOK?
Cleaned up and polished as always, but for heaven’s sake, keep your sense of humor! Wear that scarf with jingle bells or a silly hat. We want a mix of sophistication and childlike joy.

WHAT IS ON YOUR HOLIDAY WISH LIST?
Time to really focus on hauling out all of the vintage Christmas decorations to deck the house.

Giveaway | Gerard Yosca Necklace

I hope you had a relaxing Easter weekend with enough candy to hold you over until next year. And there’s one more holiday surprise to brighten your week: two people will win a Gerard Yosca single bloom necklace!

I’ve been going on and on about how much I adore Gerard’s latest collection, inspired by an A. Quincy Jones home in L.A. Each piece is a large-scale statement, yet remains versatile and easy to wear. I even wore the stonebloom necklace in a trio of looks last week (one, two and three), proving that just one great piece can be enough to get you through the season—and I can’t wait to see how the winners style their necklaces!

Two readers will take home this perfect spring blossom in white or black. (The first person selected will have her choice of the two and the other will go to the second winner.) The giveaway is open to those with a United States mailing address. Good luck!

After nearly three years of searching, I finally found my perfect LWD at Banana Republic (ordered before my shopping hiatus, of course). And, what do you know, it looks fab with the Gerard Yosca necklace I’ve been wearing all week (looks one and two). Proof that just one great statement piece is enough to get you through the season.

1 Necklace, 3 Ways | Look 2

The best sartorial dollar you can spend is on a statement piece that goes with everything. I’ve been wearing this Gerard Yosca necklace almost exclusively since I received it, so three outfits featuring the bauble this week wasn’t much of a challenge! Today, I strayed away from Monday’s mod attire in favor of something classic and feminine. A full skirt can become saccharine awfully quickly, but the necklace’s graphic flowers and a bright crossbody bag keep the look from being too prim.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
