At Home

Most of the time I leave a consignment store with dirty hands and dust-covered trinkets that weren’t worth the trouble, but every now and then there’s a hidden gem.

On Saturday, a friend recommended that we stop at Legacies in Milwaukee. The store looks small from the outside, but it manages to pack items in every nook of the building – and 70% of it is beautiful. I moved aside a cherub-adorned print (part of the questionable 30%) and discovered this beauty behind it. It’s four feet of nautical perfection. It’s the piece. I wasn’t exactly sure where it’d be displayed (and I still don’t), but it wasn’t staying at Legacies.

And that’s when I realized just how small my car really is. We tried to slide the painting through the trunk, tried to angle it, even considered tying it to the roof, but there was no way the painting was going to fit in my Honda Civic … not with the large, gaudy frame anyway. I freed the canvas and tossed the frame in a dumpster. Classy.

It’s the moment you’ve been waiting for: a brief recap of our Floridian vacation. I can never get enough oceanside lounging, especially when seashells are abound.

Florida 2012

The best place for shells was definitely along the rocky shore of the Blowing Rocks Preserve in Jupiter.

Florida 2012

Why, yes, I am holding a bag of shells. There are just a few photos of me actually looking up to appreciate the scenery. I was happier with my nose in the sand.

Florida 2012

Dave ventured much further out than I did.

Florida 2012

One final glimpse of the preserve before we continued on.

Florida 2012

Just south of the nature preserve was Palm Beach a.k.a. the first place I’ve ever felt poor. And yet, within 20 minutes of walking along Worth Avenue, we ducked into the Sunglass Hut and spent around $400 in the matter of minutes on two new pairs of shades.

Florida 2012

Although, I’m not the one with rich blood in the relationship. My white Coach aviators only cost $130.

Florida 2012

As expected, we spent plenty of time relaxing by the hotel pool (pictured) and the Atlantic.

Florida 2012

The beach entrance at the corner of A1A and Las Olas.

Florida 2012

The view is almost enough to convince me to move here – as long as my house is within a reasonable distance from the ocean.

Florida 2012

I spent entirely too much time watching the sandpipers dart in and out of the surf. They were just as excitable as children.

Florida 2012

A piece of coral that washed up on shore.

Florida 2012

One of the most interesting attractions in Fort Lauderdale is the Bonnet House Museum.

Florida 2012

Most of the lizards were camera shy, but Dave was able to get a close up of him.

Florida 2012

We went to Flamingo Gardens in Davie where I appropriately wore the flamingo-print skirt Dave gave me for Christmas. Here, I’m befriending an ibis.

Florida 2012

And, of course, Florida’s main attraction.

Unpacking our souvenirs from Florida left me longing for languid summer days, sipping on drinks adorned with flamingo swizzle sticks…

Our vacation to Fort Lauderdale was everything I hoped it would be: lounging in the sun, exploring nearby cities and enjoying oceanside cocktails. While there are still bags to unpack and photos to upload, I couldn’t wait to share a few snapshots from the trip.

  1. Watching planes at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport
  2. Coach aviators as a Palm Beach souvenir and my favorite pastime: collecting shells
  3. A bit of relaxation in Hollywood Beach
  4. An overpriced lunch at the Rustic Inn Crabhouse for their garlic crabs (a lot of work with little reward, but it was fun)
  5. Rocky shores of the Blowing Rocks Preserve near Jupiter
  6. The cutest flamingo at Flamingo Gardens (har har)
  7. Two adventurous flamingos – the rest of the flock stayed away from the tourists
  8. The courtyard oasis at our hotel: The Cocobelle Resort
  9. The hotel’s vintage key fob

Over the weekend, we drove to Michigan and welcome Over the weekend, we drove to Michigan and welcomed this little lady to the family! She’s a two-year old snow Bengal that was surrendered after being bullied by the other cats in her home. We’re pretty sure she’s a seal lynx point Bengal, which has Siamese in the lineage, based on her vibrant, slightly crossed blue eyes. She is the sweetest, softest, most playful, and unbelievably talkative little girl. We’re crazy about her!

We haven’t picked a name just yet, though. We have some ideas, but we’re waiting to get to know her personality more. 😊
