The Weekend Guide 11.18.16

MAKE
My favorite part of Thanksgiving, next to the stuffing and the pumpkin pie, are the appetizers. This recipe for figs with bacon and chile looks absolutely decadent.

LEARN
As much as I love oversize statement earrings, I don’t wear them very often because of my [probably irrational] fear of becoming an old lady with sagging earlobes. Well, it looks like fillers and anti-aging care might be able to take care of that.

SHOP
Dave is still pushing for a holiday trip somewhere tropical. I’m on the fence mostly because I’m a sucker for tradition, but if he happens to convince me, I’m definitely snagging this swimsuit for the getaway. Even better, it’s part of J.Crew’s weekend sale with 30-40% off holiday-ready items with code FESTIVE.

MEET
Artist Hank Schmidt in der Beek travels to majestic outdoor locations only to paint the pattern on his shirt.

WATCH
If there’s one thing that’s guaranteed to make me smile, it’s a Pixar film.

STOP
Don’t make these common mistakes when cooking your first Thanksgiving dinner. And, if you need inspiration for the menu, head here for a roundup of recipes.

SHOP THESE SALES
It’s clearance time at The Outnet. I picked up this neoprene pleated skirt in grey.
Pick up a Buried Bauble at Bauble Bar and save 25% on the rest of your order.
Save 50% off select items at Ann Taylor. I’m loving this cable-knit sweater.
Save up to 75% at Neiman Marcus’ clearance sale. This party dress is both adorable and affordable.
Take 50% off one full-price item at Banana Republic and 40% off the rest of your purchase.
There’s a flash sale at Pottery Barn just in time to snag a bar cart.
Save up to 70% off resort styles from Calypso St. Barth. How fun is this bag?
If you’re a Gap credit card holder, you can save 50% off  your purchase.

Bedazzled my new winter coat with vintage brooches.
Fell in love with these preppy-meets-glam pieces.

REMINISCE
The White House’s official photographer, Pete Souza, has shot nearly two million photos of President Obama. Here are 55 images that capture the personality of our 44th president.

ESCAPE
We’ve had unseasonably warm weather in Wisconsin over the last few weeks, but the undeniable winter chill is starting to creep in. Since a tropical getaway isn’t in the cards right now, I’ll take in the island vibes with this cocktail.

WEAR
You may have seen photos tagged #Safetypin circulating on Instagram lately. Here’s what it means. And, if you’d like to show your support, may I suggest this chic option?

SHOP
Sephora’s VIB members enjoy 20% off this weekend with code 20VIB. I used it as an opportunity to stock up on favorites I’ll use throughout the year: three tubes of my favorite lipstick, face wash, charcoal mask, eye liner, face lotion, foundation, and lash primer.

EMBRACE
I’ve always hated doing things on my own. This essay is an inspiring piece on why we should break that stigma and overcome the fear of being by ourselves.

MAKE
Save some of that oven room for the turkey and sides this Thanksgiving and make no-bake pumpkin pie bars for dessert.

EARLIER THIS WEEK
Wore my favorite dress of the season.
Urged you to vote … and then was saddened by the outcome.
Shared the one item your wardrobe needs for fall and winter.
Splurged on a mint winter coat. (Snag it in a variety of colors here.)

The Weekend Guide 11.04.16

Happy Friday! It’s been entirely too long since I’ve blogged regularly, much less put together “The Weekend Guide” for your perusal. As usual, September and October were two stress-filled months at work that left me with little personal time and the last thing I wanted to do during those fleeting moments was sit in front of a computer! Happily, though, that’s behind me and our little getaway to Kentucky and Tennessee left me refreshed and eager to dive back into the blog.

EAT
Airline food gets a bad rap, but it’s not all terrible. Learn more from an in-flight dining critic who has a surprisingly captivating Instagram feed of his own mile-high dining experiences.

VOTE
Election Day on Nov. 8 is fast approaching! Make sure you’re prepared with the location of your polling place and what will be on your ballot.

STOP
The word fiancé is falling out of vogue with Millennials.

LEARN
Kate Spade’s Cameron Street collection quickly became a huge success when it debuted earlier this year. The brand is focusing on the collection’s popularity this holiday season with more inventory and accessories like interchangeable straps to personalize the handbags. (Personally, the last thing I need is a new purse, but I’ve considered this strap to add a little pep to my black bucket bag. Although, I’ll probably go with this Rebecca Minkoff option instead.)

SWIPE
I’d love to live in a world of cashless transactions and there’s a few countries already on their way to making that a reality.

SIP
With a combination of gin, grapefruit, and maraschino, this 1930s-inspired cocktail is on my must-sip list for the weekend. Cheers!

SHOP THESE SALES
Spend $40 at Bauble Bar and get a free choker.
Cozy up this winter with Mongolian lamb pillows now 30% off until Monday.
Take an extra 50% off sale items at Loft. (Loving these sunglasses and this LBD.)
Full-price dresses are now just $75 at Ann Taylor! (This looks like something you’d find at Tory Burch.)
Take an extra 30% off sale at Kate Spade with code CHEERS. (The gingham flats are my favorite.)
Cold-weather favorites and sale items are an extra 30% off at J.Crew.
Take 40% off regular-price items at BR. (This is the best turtleneck sweater for layering.)

EARLIER THIS WEEK
I went to Nashville and pet a kangaroo.

The Weekend Guide 09.16.16

TONE
Staying in shape is a lot more fun with these ballet moves.

BROWSE
As always, Fashion Week offered tons of style inspiration on and off the runway.

PEEK
The African American History Museum broke ground in 2012 and will finally open to the public on Sept. 24, 2016. Judging by the photos and an interview with architect David Adjaye, it’s going to be an incredible experience. We’ve seen the building in various stages of construction over the years and now I’m even more eager to book another trip to D.C.

SHOP
I came across this watch last night and I can’t get it out of my head. The Art Deco design makes it a timeless piece for any collection.

STYLE
Love Emily Henderson’s old-meets-new aesthtic as much as I do? Learn how to incorporate the look into your own home with tips from her creative director.

KNOW
The modern woman wants versatility in her wardrobe, even when it comes to evening wear.

EARLIER THIS WEEK
Wore a dress Rainbow Brite would be proud of.
Yearned for a preppy roundup of fall items.
Donned a black maxi dress with a flirty open back.

The Weekend Guide 09.03.16

BUDGET
I sift through my lingerie drawer approximately once a year and toss anything that’s worn out, doesn’t fit correctly, or just isn’t loved anymore. I’m just about to embark on that annual project and loved reading this post about budgeting in order to spend money on one of life’s indulgent, little luxuries: good lingerie. (And, speaking of lingerie, if you know of any great bra brands, please share. Victoria’s Secret seems to discontinue my favorites each year and I’m back to square one with shopping.)

KNOW
As much as I love Harper’s Bazaar, I can’t stand the “Fabulous at Any Age” feature. I’m delighted to know that my fashion icon Iris Apfel agrees that dressing for your age is “stupid.”

CONSIDER
When you’re tasked with shopping on a limited budget, you’re forced to carefully consider any purchase. However, shopping regrets still occur.

SIP
Spend the last weekend of summer poolside sipping frosé.

LEARN
Sales are slipping at many women’s stores and it may come down to one thing: poorly made clothing.

CAMPAIGN
I’m all about three-day weekends and I’ve always been convinced that I go back to work more refreshed and motivated to tackle just as much work over the following four days as I’d get done in five. It seems that science agrees. Now, who do we petition to make it a thing?

EARLIER THIS WEEK
Cleaning up with a robotic vacuum. (Bonus: cute photos of Bacon.)
August’s sartorial spending recap.
My new favorite cocktail dress.
A few things I have my eye on.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
