The Weekend Guide 02.26.16

TOSS
If you’ve been hoarding back issues of magazines, it’s time to let them go. Meg took the decluttering plunge earlier this week and lived to write about it!

LEARN
Italian designer Brunello Cucinelli has taken a long-term, ethical view to building his cashmere brand.

KNOW
Unhitched women are are the forefront of America’s culture change.

REFRESH
Spring cleaning inevitable leads to a desire to revamp your home decor. Here are eight ways to freshen up for spring.

ANTICIPATE
Lands’ End has partnered with fashion industry talent to launch a new designer collection. I have no idea how much any of it will cost, but that coat pictured above will be mine.

WEAR
I’ve partnered with eBay to create a series of shopping and lifestyle guides. I’ve put together a list of spring’s top five jewelry trends to try in 2016.

EARLIER THIS WEEK
Wore a bright red dress, which is my favorite thing in my closet right now.
Featured it the next day with the week’s most coveted.
Found a fantastic M2Malletier dupe.
Admitted to my shopping conquests.
Made mini cherry pies in the shape of hearts. (Let me know if you’d like me to post a tutorial!)
Picked up this cute pajama set from Old Navy. (I love this gingham set, too!)

DIY
Love the look of a marble lamp, but not the price tag? Try this DIY project.

WATCH
I recently watched The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and was incredibly inspired by the ’60s fashion in the movie. I’m now planning to make my way through this list. While the the list includes favorites like Clueless and Breakfast at Tiffany’s, there are a handful of movies I haven’t yet watched.

DISCOVER
This article was circulating a few weeks ago, illustrating the standards of beauty for women’s bodies in 18 countries. The company that commissioned the study has now released the results of the men’s version.

LEARN
I edit my photos in Photoshop, but it’s a long process. I’m more tempted than ever to spring for Lightroom after Kelly’s easy tutorial on how she tweaks photos for her blog.

ANTICIPATE
Kate Spade, the person, is coming back to the fashion world with her new accessories line called Frances Valentine.

ADMIRE
Due to the proliferation DSLRs and smartphones, fashion sketches have taken a backseat at runway shows. This season, Apple lent iPad Pros and Apple Pencils to illustrators in hopes of reinventing the iconic drawings for the digital age.

BAKE
If you’re feeling ambitious this weekend, try this almond cake outfitted with darling Valetine’s Day decorations.

LEARN
Have you ever wondered why humans kiss? Smithsonian Magazine has some insights.

LIGHT
I haven’t lit a stick of incense since high school when my friends and I would hole up in my room to summon spirits with the Ouija board. This Valentine is enough to make me run out and buy some.

STIR
#XOXO, Bae, and Swipe Right are just some of the cheeky phrases on these stir sticks.

KNOW
Study up on the history of Valentine’s Day before Sunday.

SIP
Single? This rose cocktail is perfect for a Galentine’s Day celebration.

EARLIER THIS WEEK
Wore the softest striped shirt.
Bought a pair of oversize flower earrings.
Enjoyed a sunny day at one of Madison’s frozen lakes.
Linked up with a few ladies to share our Valentine’s ensembles.
Shared how you can snag $25 to The Laundress.
Coveted boho vibes.

The Weekend Guide 02.05.16

LISTEN
Head down hip hop’s memory lane with a scrolling audio timeline of the Billboard Top Ten from 1989 to 2015.

SAVE
I wanted to chat about my experience with The Laundress products this week, but I ran into some technical difficulties with our computer that left me in a blog drought for a few days. I’ll get to it on Monday (fingers crossed). In the meantime, snap a photo of your laundry day chores and post it to Instagram with #IamTheLaundress. Then, fill out this form for a $25 voucher to spend at The Laundress!

WEAR
I’m late to the cropped flare bandwagon, but I’m eager to jump aboard now that I came across this pair (also in a darker wash here). Here are tips on how to try the trend.

RELAX
At this point, I’m in the kids-after-33 camp. Everyone seems to have their opinions about older mothers, but those who naturally conceive later in life might enjoy a longer life.

HIDE
Stop looking like a DJ with a gigantic headphones. Instead, disguise a pair of ear buds in a statement pendant.

GIGGLE
Have you seen Tiffany Beveridge’s hilarious take on toddler fashion? I’m eager to pick up her book featuring the fictional pint-size fashionista Quinoa.

The Weekend Guide 01.29.16

EXPLORE
I’ve never been to New Orleans, but this three-day guide is making a beignet-filled trip to Louisiana awfully tempting.

BAKE
The heart cutouts make this strawberry balsamic slab pie perfect for Valentine’s Day dessert. (Use a small heart cookie cutter to make the pie design easier.)

LOVE
Alissa’s recent post on looking stylish while gaining weight is a poignant reminder that we should all love our bodies no matter the size.

ADORN
These oversize earrings are ah-mazing. Take inspiration from ’60s sweatheart Twiggy and pair the mod flowers with a tent dress and low block heels. (Save 25% on your full-price purchase at BaubleBar with code HEART25.)

LEARN
Unfortunately, we live in a society where throwing away items that have reached the end of their life cycle is the norm. Ikea wants to change that. The retailer is exploring ways to extend the life of its furniture and recycle old pieces.

APPLAUD
Fifty-seven years after her debut, Barbie is getting a makeover.

Five Under $55

umbrella, $34 (also comes in a flamingo print) | earrings, $8.40* | espadrilles, $55 | nail polish, $27 | dress, $30

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

• Spent quality time with my favorite cat

• Biked for Pacificos, chips and quac, and tacos at @bandit.tacos

• Loved how the rain collected on the Lady’s Mantle I planted last year

• Dipped my toes (quite literally) into this year’s mesh shoe trend

• Snapped a lot of Lily content

• Drove home with a new lilac in the passenger seat

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
