The Weekend Guide

WATCH
It’s easy to go overboard with holiday spending. Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you continue shopping for yourself and loved ones this month.

BAKE
As far as I’m concerned, December means it’s time to add peppermint to just about every dessert. I’m anxious to make these indulgent brownies.

ADMIRE
This slideshow features 27 photos of the best White House decorations and memories.

SIP
Mulled wine is an easy — and festive — drink option.

WRAP
There’s never a shortage of elaborate gift wrap ideas around the holidays. You can keep your over-the-top designs. I love this elegant option with a simple bow and monogrammed ornament. Can’t find alphabet stickers in time? Try it with bakers twine in either red or gold and a jingle bell, both available at Target.

PLAY
Which one of your friends always tells the same damn story? Put it to a vote with “Who’s Most Likely To…” The game looks like a fantastic ice-breaker with a new group of people, as long as they have good senses of humor!

EARLIER THIS WEEK
Here’s what I spent my money on in November.
A few beloved snapshots from last month.
The eyelet dress I’d like to wear all of the time.
Stocking stuffers for $25 or less! (Dave uses the shoe cleaner on his sneakers.)
Anthro’s adorable holiday window.
15 of the best colorful faux fur scarves.

FIVE UNDER $55
Scroll through for this week’s best budget finds:

BAKE
These peppermint brownie cookies look amazing! If you’d rather bake something with fewer steps, try these peppermint crinkle cookies. I made them a half dozen times last year! (Just mentioning the link makes me want to pop a batch in the oven when we get back from Chicago.)

CELEBRATE
As many of you know, I’m an event planner by day. Rule number one on this list is a must! You’d be surprised by how many people wait to RSVP.

GIGGLE
From crowdsourcing to man buns, here’s what Kevin McCallister would do if he was left Home Alone this year.

SIP
Ever wanted to make your own balsam simple syrup? Well, now’s your chance! Kidding aside, this labor-intensive cocktail does sound like Christmas in a glass — and it’s a unique way to put some of those wayward branches to good use. (Fortunately, balsam syrup will last for weeks tightly sealed in the fridge. Make a big batch now to have enough on hand when the mood strikes.)

LEARN
If anyone else had a crush on that Bass-hole, there’s a good reason for it.

SWOON
Japanese artist Tatsuya Tanaka has created a mini diorama every day since 2011. Most involve a creative repurposing of everyday items, like a sweatshirt snow drift (above) or a potato desert.

FIVE UNDER $55

EARLIER THIS WEEK
We’re in Chicago for the weekend! Follow along on Snapchat at bedknobsbaubles!
Here are a few gift ideas for the hostess on your shopping list.
Why I love Endless Eyewear.
I finally mixed two versions of my favorite print this season.
Shared my thoughts a recent Sephora order.
Bought the cutest wrapping paper at Target.
Ordered this dress with Anthro’s 25% off dresses promotion.

FREE JEWELRY
There are only a few days left to enter to win a sterling silver necklace from Maps by A.Jaffe. You get to pick a sentimental location and mark it with a diamond! Good luck!

SERVE
These pulled pork and brie sliders look amazing. Make the salad and sangria featured in the same post and you’re ready for guests.

UNDERSTAND
Many of us try to get the most mileage out of our wardrobe, purchasing items that can be worn to the office and on the weekend. A new study suggests that the more we wear our clothes, the less likely we’ll continue to like them.

EAT
#LoveWins and Ben & Jerry’s is celebrating by renaming their cookie dough classic “I Dough, I Dough” for a limited time.

[spacer]

CELEBRATE
Happy National Sunglasses Day! Today is your annual reminder to protect your peepers from UV rays and an excuse to buy new sunglasses. These are my latest pair.

KNOW
Ever wonder what’s the best time to post on social media? Here you go.

LEARN
Gone are the days of staying in cookie cutter hotels abroad. Millennials are looking for a more authentic experience overseas and would prefer to stay in a small boutique hotel, an AirBnB, or a hostel rather than shell out cash for an American hotel chain. Marriott is looking to reinvent its properties with more local flavor in an attempt to capture the attention of–and the dollars from–a new generation of travelers.

BEMOAN
Gap Inc. recently announced plans to close 175 stores. This piece discusses why Gap may have lost its cool and became, as the author so eloquently puts it, a “basic bitch.”

DRINK
We have beer. We have raspberries. We have orange juice. Soon, we’ll put them together and have beermosas. I hope they’re as good as the photo looks.

FOLLOW
Artist Meghan Maconochie creates colorful animals and cultural icons out of pencil shavings. Follow her impressive Instagram feed here.

SEE
We all know Disney takes some creative liberties with its animated princesses. See what they’d look like if they were historically accurate.

LEARN
According to this article, German-Americans are America’s largest ethnic group and they’ve assimilated so well that we barely even notice.

LIGHT
I love bringing a new scent with me on vacation. It helps bring back happy memories of our travels when we return. Hi Wildflower Botanica is looking to do the same thing with books.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
I may be on crutches, but I refuse to let it kill my summer style. Here’s inspiration for an 11-piece wardrobe to get you through the work week with ease. Many of the items will transition into fall. (Truth be told, I already purchased the dress, skirt, shell, and cardigan. The dress is incredibly well-made and flattering. I’ll need to get the top taken in, but it’s worth it.)

TAKE
This guide for taking the perfect vacation Instagram is spot on (and perhaps a little embarrassing).

[spacer]

WATCH
Orange is the New Black. Obviously.

[spacer]

BUY
The MICHAEL Michael Kors off-the-shoulder dress I bought last month sold out almost instantly. Here’s another yellow version that’s just as pretty and retails for only $50.

[spacer]

MEET
There’s an artist in Chicago transforming potholes into mosaics of ice cream treats.

[spacer]

MAKE
We’re spending more time at home with my broken foot, but I won’t feel like I’m missing out on anything if we plan a margarita night with plenty of chips and this fresh peach salsa.

[spacer]

LEARN
We commonly believe that our stomachs shrink when we’re dieting, but is that really the case?

IN OTHER NEWS
Take 25% off dresses at Anthropologie this weekend with code DRESSDAYS. There are also new items added to the ASHA sample sale.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
