On the Right Foot: Thanksgiving Desserts to Make Early, Fall Foliage in California, Why American Front Lawns Look the Same, & More!

October 9, 2023 by jessica Leave a Comment

I made this Bundt cake yesterday. It’s a riff on a glazed old fashioned donut. Bake on the lower end of the time range. Mine was done at the 40-minute mark.

After spending $13 on cardamom for the aforementioned cake, I looked up why it’s such an expensive spice.

Tory Burch’s fall event runs through the end of the day tomorrow. I used it as an excuse to dip into my “splurge” savings and add this bag to my collection.

It’s by design that most American front yards look the same.

The holiday season is fast approaching and while I know it feels early to be talking about Thanksgiving, here are some of my picks for entertaining essentials if you’d like to get a jump on planning.

Molly Baz’s new cookbook comes out tomorrow! I enjoyed reading this interview with her.

A reminder to try to be mindful of fast-fashion consumption. We’re all guilty of it, so let’s make sure the purchases we do make have some longevity and aren’t trend-inspired.

Admittedly, I’ve never considered California for a fall foliage getaway.

25 Thanksgiving desserts to make ahead and freeze.

I just bought this sweater in gray and I love it so much.

Enjoy your week!

Shopping Guide: Table Settings and Serving Pieces to Buy Early This Year

October 6, 2023 by jessica Leave a Comment

While I know plenty of people are looking forward to Halloween in a few weeks, I’m actually looking forward to Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving is the official kickoff to the holiday season and a lot less stressful than the December holidays when you take away the pressure of gift-giving. Plus the food is unparalleled!

I’m an event planner and that Type A personality certainly influences me to pre-plan as much as I can — especially as the holiday season approaches. One of my top tips? Shop for your Thanksgiving table settings and serving pieces early. It gives you the luxury of time to sift through pieces online before they sell out, so you can curate that perfect holiday table. Plus, you don’t have to worry about shipping delays.

Below, you’ll find 12 of my favorite pieces for Thanksgiving (or, really, any upcoming holiday or dinner party) to consider as we head into soiree season!

Things I Bought & Loved in September

September 28, 2023 by jessica Leave a Comment

This month’s roundup includes a few more outdoorsy items than I’d normally purchase and for a very good reason: we’re going to Switzerland next month! I can’t begin to share how excited I am about our Alpine adventure; everything looks like it was plucked right from a storybook.

WARDROBE
See this year’s sartorial additions here.

  • Muyan waterdrop earrings – For a pair of designer dupes, these aren’t bad. Definitely worth the price for a cheap thrill.
  • Athleta seasoft hoodie – The fabric on this has a unique hand feel. I wouldn’t say it’s slippery, but kind of? In any case, the texture and weight make it drape nicely. I went with my typical size medium.
  • Pomander Place “Kenzo” dress – I feel like I haven’t quite found my style again since the pandemic ended. I think that has a lot to do with working from home almost exclusively. I don’t often wear dresses anymore and it’s not for lack of interest. It’s really just a lack of human interaction motivating me to dress up! I ended up purchasing this dress to wear with ballet flats for a daytime work event and it’s really quite cute! It runs true to size and the cut is forgiving without overwhelming your frame.
  • Boden “Edie” fair isle sweater – I just adore this sweater! I wanted a more colorful sweater than what I currently have in my closet and I fell for the retro-inspired vibe of this one from Boden. It fits true to size, but it’s on the slimmer side. Go up a size if you prefer your sweaters to be roomier.
  • Eddie Bauer stowaway packable backpack – This is not the most thrilling purchase of the month, but it’s practical. I needed a packable backpack to bring to Switzerland that will fit my daytime essentials on hikes. This easily fits a puffer jacket, DSLR camera, water bottle, and sweatshirt with room to spare.
  • Danner trail 2650 hiking shoe – I was so optimistic about the Nike trail runners I bought at the beginning of the year, but they cut into the back of my ankles no matter how much I try to break them in. That’s just not going to work for our trip and I opted to buy a pair of hiking shoes from an actual outdoor brand, Danner. These are incredible comfortable with plenty of traction for hikes. (I’ve been testing them out on the weekends.) I’d love to buy the classic Danner boots with the red laces eventually, but I didn’t want to lug those around on this year’s trip!

HOUSEHOLD

  • Schoolhouse “Bond” lamp – Finally! New bedroom lamps! When we moved into our house six years ago, we bought a pair of inexpensive lamps from Target. The scale was always too small next to a king-size bed, but it was never a priority to replace them until we upgraded our bedframe and knew what direction stylistically we’d be going in. I had pinned the Schoolhouse lamp on my Pinterest board over a year ago, but kept shopping because they aren’t cheap and I wanted to make sure that they really were “the ones” before committing. After Photoshopping different lamps into my mood board, I found myself going back to these over and over again. We waited until a Schoolhouse sale before placing the order and, as expected, they’re perfect. (I’ve mentioned this before, but we have a shared savings account for home-related expenses. The money is already earmarked for a house expense, which makes a purchase like this feel less financially daunting.)

On the Right Foot: #TradWife, Pumpkin Bread, Free COVID Tests, & More!

September 25, 2023 by jessica Leave a Comment

I know I’m biased, but goodness, Lily is too cute. And if you need a new bath mat, I like this one.

Americans, the U.S. government is sending out COVID tests starting today. Sign up to get yours.

Have you heard about the bonkers #TradWife trend? Yuck.

Oktoberfest is in full swing! Here’s my guide to dos and don’ts at the Wiesn.

I’m beyond delighted that ballet flats are officially back.

If you love pumpkin, don’t skip this bread recipe. I appreciate that it uses a full can of pumpkin puree.

The latest list of covetable finds. I have the earrings and jeans and would love to add the blouse to my wardrobe.

Two weeks ago, the FDA deemed phenylephrine ineffective. That means the cold medicine you’ve likely been reaching for is no better than a placebo. Make sure you get the regular Sudafed from the pharmacist this flu season.

I’m fond of this wooden scalloped tray.

This sums up every woman’s experience at work.

Enjoy the week!

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
