A Few of My Favorite Things

November 4, 2014 by jessica 11 Comments

LovingLatelyNov2014-3

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]A[/dropcap]s style bloggers, it’s far too easy to get wrapped up in the next purchase and the next curated wish list that we don’t spend enough time appreciating the items we already own. It’s a shame, really. Some of my favorite posts are by bloggers who write about an item and share what made it special, unique, or a recurring favorite in their lives. I wanted to do something similar and share snapshots of the items I’ve been lucky to welcome into my collection and the old favorites that are back in rotation, like the “Bonjour” necklace above. It was gifted to me last year by Onecklace and I wore it constantly for the first couple of months until it took a backseat to larger baubles. I wanted to wear it in Brussels, but I didn’t think wearing a necklace that said hello in French (their native language) would be as cheeky as it is in the States!

I’m really excited about this new addition: a pair of Dolce & Gabbana sunglasses courtesy of SmartBuyGlasses (worn in yesterday’s post). I wasn’t familiar with SmartBuyGlasses until this collaboration, but I wholeheartedly recommend them. There’s a wide selection of designer sunglasses and eyeglasses to choose from and while I was tempted by the Celine selection, I went with this polarized pair instead. The size and shape are similar to the Prada sunglasses I bought last month, and they’re $60 cheaper. (There’s a black version here.) The shipping time is an estimated five to 11 business days, but my package arrived much quicker. It left Italy on Oct. 28 and made it to Madison just two days later.  Every order also comes with a complimentary lens kit with cleaning solution, a microfiber cloth, and an eyeglass repair kit. I just love those little extras that the experience feel special.

I treated myself to this Tory Burch beauty during the recent private sale. As I mentioned in my budget recap post, finding a great clutch always seems to be an afterthought when I have a special occasion coming up. (I can’t tell you how many clutches I’ve purchased at the last minute and rarely use again.) So, I jumped at the chance to buy this white and gold minaudiere before we have a celebration that calls for it. The laser cut design is so pretty and I love that it has a strap that’s more substantial than those chintzy chain versions. I know I mentioned it before, but I have no doubt this is going to be in my wardrobe forever. (That is, as long as Dave is fine holding my phone if I upgrade to an iPhone 6. The iPhone 5 fits snugly, but the clutch won’t be able to accommodate the length of the newer model. Whatever. I usually have the phone in my hand to Instagram anyway.)

“Spaghetti Strap” by Essie is my favorite neutral polish. I know it looks like a rich ballet pink in the bottle, but it’s actually quite sheer. One layer gives you a glossy nude polish and any chips a few days later are barely noticeable. Another thin layer starts to bring out the pinkness of the polish, yet the color remains understated and versatile.

JCrewBlazer-1

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]T[/dropcap]here are so many women who love J.Crew’s Schoolboy blazer, but I could never get on board with the shrunken style. Paired with ankle-length pants, I felt like an adolescent sprouting out of her clothes. I had considered springing for a more traditional cut, but that seemed too stodgy for my style. (Such a Goldilocks moment, huh?) Enter the brand’s Regent blazer, which is juuust right. It has feminine tailoring with crisp lines and a modern standing collar (accentuated by a forest green inset in the case of the heather carbon version). I wore it to our annual business expo with a knee-length black dress similar to this one, but it transitions to weekend wear with a short, flirty frock.

Bauble of the Week

November 2, 2014 by jessica 5 Comments

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]N[/dropcap]ow that it’s November, it’s time to get a jump on the holiday season! I’ll wait until December to break out the boozy eggnog, but I’m already perusing my favorite shops for gift-giving ideas. Wouldn’t this Eddie Borgo bracelet be the perfect indulgence for the jewelry lover on your list? The Neiman Marcus exclusive reminds me of Monica Vinader’s diamond friendship bracelet. For those on a tighter budget, this Bauble Bar version also has the signature adjustable straps and a much more friendly price tag.

Budget Update

October 31, 2014 by jessica 17 Comments

Budget-Oct2014

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]T[/dropcap]wo months down, four months to go, and less than a third of my budget left. Holy sh*t.

I can’t say I’m surprised, though. I’ve been on a bit of bender, collecting my fall favorites so there’s plenty of time to enjoy them. At least that’s been my rationale, but it is on par with last year’s spending habits. I had a dry spell in November and December (likely because I was checking others off my holiday shopping list) that I expect to happen again this year.

That said, I did put those dollars to good use and purchased a few items that had been on my wish list for a long time: a pair of oversize Prada sunglasses with a subtle cat eye shape, an indulgent yet versatile evening clutch, and a blazer that I can wear to work or as a light fall jacket. The other purchases weren’t as well planned, but have been in regular rotation with the exception of the DVF sunglasses. I impulsively purchased them while waiting for the Prada pair to arrive and I haven’t worn them since. I don’t know if it’s because I’m in the honeymoon period with the sunglasses I actually yearned for or if it’s because I just don’t love them as much. Either way, it’s a good reminder that I value thoughtful purchases more than impulse buys.

In the coming months, I’m itching to add more a-line shift and swing dresses to my wardrobe. They’re my favorite pieces to wear with a piece of statement jewelry and pointy flats.

THE BUDGET

I started with a six-month budget of $1,500. I consider blog revenue and eBay sales to be “fun money” and may add a portion of that additional income to my overall seasonal budget (if it doesn’t end up in my travel fund first). I’ll record any budget increases or expenditures here each month. (There will also be an annual “Tax Refund Splurge” that goes above my budget, but I’ll devote a post to that in January.)

  • $1,500 starting budget
  • + $200 added to the budget this season ($200 this month)
  • – $1313.45 spent this season ($903.85 this month)
  • = $386.55 remaining

WARDROBE UPDATE

View all of my purchases (that I can find stock photos for) on my fall and winter wardrobe Pinterest board.

Clothing:

  • Ted Baker opulent bloom skirt ($248)
  • LOFT scuba flare skirt in navy and black ($98.70)
  • J.Crew “Tippi” sweater in black ($62.90)
  • NEW Theory “Dreeden” sweater in charcoal ($130): Nordstrom Rack opened in Madison and I braved the chaos to attend on opening day, which I don’t recommend doing. There were so many people there, the staff was overwhelmed (but super sweet and helpful), and a woman ran over my foot with a stroller. This sweater was worth it though. It’s unimaginably soft and warm. I’m planning to hibernate in it all winter.
  • NEW J.Crew “Regent” blazer in heather carbon ($138.60): Blazers are ultra practical for an event planner (pockets!) and this was a must-have for my business expo.

Shoes & Accessories:

  • NEW Prada sunglasses ($204): I’ve been crushing on these for awhile and I was pretty excited to see that they were on sale for 20% off as part of Nordstrom’s price-matching policy. I can’t believe it took me so long to pull the trigger. They’re all kinds of fabulous in person.
  • NEW DVF sunglasses ($50): My Prada sunglasses hadn’t yet arrived when I visited Nordstrom Rack. I was sucked in by the rows of eyewear and took these home. They’re more of a square shape than anything else I own, but I’m more enamored with the Prada pair.
  • NEW Tory Burch “Bedford” flats in cobalt snakeskin ($206.25): This was an impulse purchase fueled by a beer fest and they’re glorious.
  • NEW Tory Burch Metallic Lace Minaudiere ($175): Does anyone else bemoan their clutch collections whenever a special occasion is on the horizon? Just me? I was tired of last-minute runs to T.J.Maxx to find something (anything!) to go with my outfit. This bag is like a little art piece in versatile white leather that will go with a lot of different ensembles. And the strap makes it easy to juggle drinks and appetizers at the same time. Priorities.

Gifted Items:
This section sort of comes off as braggy, which isn’t my intention. Blogging is getting less and less transparent and I want to be clear with what I’ve purchased and what items I’ve received as part of a collaboration. I’m awfully picky about the brands I work with–and won’t post items I don’t love–so rest assured these are solid.

  • Elie Tahari x DesigNation faux-fur mixed-media jacket
  • Elie Tahari x DesigNation NYC skyline fit & flare dress
  • Apt. 9 openwork ring
  • Julie Vos Acanthus cuff
  • Julie Vos Tatiana ring
  • Julie Vos Baroque pendant
  • Gerard Yosca necklace

Items I tried this month, but didn’t purchase:

  • Badgley Mischka mineral print skirt: I added this to last month’s budget update before it arrived. It was gorgeous in person, but it fit too high on my waist. I’m working on dropping a few pounds, but there’s no guarantee it’ll sit in a more flattering spot and I really don’t want to keep things in my closet for “someday.”
  • Elliott Lucca ankle boots: These were my favorites of the ankle boot lineup I did a few weeks back. Unfortunately, the shaft was a bit too high for on me and I couldn’t wiggle my toes. They sure are pretty though.

Donated or sold:

  • 5 dresses
  • 3 pairs of shoes
  • 1 skirt
  • 3 handbags
  • 3 belts
  • a boatload of old costume jewelry from places like H&M and Forever21

If you’ve been searching for this cult classic in “Beso,” it’s finally restocked! I love the magenta “Fiore” version and I’m anxious to wear try it in candy apple red. It does dry out my lips considerably, but a generous application of Vaseline at night is usually all I need to rehydrate by morning.

While I knew the house had potential, it was hard to look past some of the owner’s “design” choices. Though, it looks like the room was destined to have a warm-toned quilt. 😂

P.S. @schoolhouse just released new colors of their popular Stillwater Floral Quilt!

And, for those interested, I’ve linked my bedroom items here: https://liketk.it/5iC8R

It also inadvertently became the weekend I made Dave eat a cheeseburger every day, between @redhotranchchicago, @eatmottst, and @smallcheval. There are worst ways to spend a weekend.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.
