Let’s Talk: Budgeting

August 17, 2015 by jessica 19 Comments

LetsTalkAboutBudgeting

We all skirt around the issue of money on our blogs and, to be honest, I’ve never really felt comfortable with my budget posts because they don’t accurately reflect how I budget for clothing. So, I thought I’d open the discussion about budgeting to share my strategies and learn your tips for fiscal responsibility.

GOAL SETTING

Before determining what to spend, or even what to save, setting up financial goals is a must. This includes long-term goals (like retirement), paying off debt, and big ticket purchases (think future house, not future handbag). Determine how much you need to accomplish these things and work backward to figure how much you need to put toward your goals annually and then monthly. These are your priority items that you should treat like a monthly bill. I urge you to be realistic about how much you can save each month. If all you can save is $50 per paycheck, it’s better than nothing. Choosing an unrealistic goal will leave you discouraged and unlikely to continue saving. (It should go without saying that paying off credit card debt should be your top priority. And, for goodness sakes, take advantage of your company’s 401(k) plan. It’s free money if they match your contributions.)

SAVING

Now it’s time to save. Without savings, we’d never have enough money for a home, vacation, wedding, or a covetable handbag. I use Capital One 360 to set up various savings accounts (no, this isn’t sponsored). I have a general account that doubles as my emergency fund where I’m working to save up three months of income. I also have a “Europe” savings account, a “Home” account for a future down payment and furnishings for our current place, and a “Splurge” account. Whenever I get paid, I transfer a set amount to each account. I don’t put very much in my “Splurge” account, only $50 per paycheck, but it’s also where blog income and eBay earnings go. The great thing about Capital One 360 is that you can create as many different savings accounts as you want without the need for a minimum balance. You can also name and rename the accounts to remind you of your goals. (I had one when I was saving for my Hermes bracelet. Having the account named as such made made me feel less guilty about spending that kind of cash on a piece of jewelry. Now, I’m starting one for the mini Chloe “Marcie” bag I love so much.) It’s important to put a dollar amount to each of your goals and determine a monthly savings goal to help you get there. It adds a level of urgency that helps to prioritize it when you’re weighing your options between putting that $200 in savings or buying a dress (ahem) that caught your eye.

BUDGETING

To determine my budget, I add the overall expected income for the month and subtract all fixed expenses (rent, student loans, etc.), credit card debt, expected variable expenses (i.e. medical bills for my fractured foot or car repairs), and savings goals. These are the nonnegotiable priority items that must be paid off first. Then, I take the remaining amount and divide that by four to calculate my weekly budget. This is money I use for clothing, dining out, entertainment, gas, and groceries. I found it too overwhelming to set a monthly spending limit for things like groceries. Breaking it down into a week-by-week limit makes it easier for me to manage. I offset any surplus or deficit with money from the surrounding weeks. This is why my monthly clothing budget didn’t really hold up. In the event that I want to splurge, I first supplemented my income with blog revenue or higher than average work commissions, and I cut back on spending in other areas.

For example, here’s where my money went last week. My starting balance is $225:

  • J.Crew Sweater: $64 (This hasn’t arrived yet. I’ll add the money to this week’s budget if I need to return it.)
  • Groceries: $84
  • Dining Out: $11
  • Home: $17
  • Gas: $72 (This is unusually high because we drove to my parents’ house last weekend. It’s usually $25-30 per week.)
  • Misc.: $9

That left me with a deficit of $31.50 that I’ll subtract from this week’s budget. Calculating my spending each week helps me stay on track to address these deficits before they snowball into a larger amount. Left unaddressed, $30 per week turns into $120 that I didn’t account for during the month. That money would be taken back out of savings and I’d lose traction on my long-term goals.

ADDITIONAL STRATEGIES

There are a few additional savvy spending and saving tactics to keep in mind:

  • Cost Per Wear: This totally comes off as a fashion girl’s hinkey rationalization for a big ticket item, but there’s truth in it. Spending $200 on a dress you’ll wear 10 times comes out to just $20 per wear. A $60 ASOS number that you only wear once isn’t a worthwhile purchase. It’s hard to avoid those cheap thrills, I know, but it’s worth training yourself to spot items you’ll actually get enough use out of. (That said, go for that ASOS dress if you think you’ll wear it as often and the quality will hold up.)
  • Rewards Credit Cards: Tread lightly with this piece of advice. As long as you’re able to pay off your credit card debt in full every month, go for a credit card with a great rewards program. I have a Capital One Venture card that’s basically like getting cash back to use on travel purchases. If you’re tempted to overspend, stick with cash or your debit card.
  • Plan Purchases: I have a private Pinterest board where I pin potential purchases. So, when there’s an unexpected Lilly Pulitzer sale, I’m not nearly as tempted to stray from my planned purchases to waste money on something else.
  • Unroll Promotional Emails: I use Unroll.me to consolidate promotional emails into one email I look at daily. This cuts down on sale temptation tremendously. I also use the service to manage subscriptions to store mailings and unsubscribe from ones I no longer care about. (Is there ever not a sale event at LOFT?!)
  • Research Purchases: I understand the temptation of a flash sale, but do some research if it’s a brand that multiple retailers carry. Many times you can find the item even cheaper or discover a discount code at another location.

WHAT’S YOUR BUDGET M.O.?

Budget Update

BudgetUpdateJuly2015v2

See all of the year’s wardrobe additions here.

THE BUDGET

Each month, I’ve earmarked $250 to spend on clothing and accessories. I consider blog revenue and eBay sales to be “fun money” and will add a portion of that additional income to my monthly budget (if it doesn’t end up in my travel fund first). I’ll record any budget increases or expenditures here each month. Anything that has been ordered and has not yet arrived will appear on the next budget update. I’m also allowing any extra money to rollover into the next month.

  • $250 starting budget
  • – $102 deficit from last month
  • + $0 added to the budget this month
  • – $165 spent this month (I’m not counting the sneakers I had to buy out of necessity.)
  • = $17 remaining (Let’s just call this even instead of moving this deficit to August.)

PURCHASED

  • J.Crew henley tank dress ($18, available in solid colors): This little beach cover up is the cutest thing and it dries quickly. I thought the waist tie was unnecessary–and just one more thing to misplace at the pool–so I took it off. It’s a steal at $15 to $20 with J.Crew’s current promotion of an extra 50% off final sale. It’s machine-washable, but I did put it in a lingerie bag to keep the cotton gauze from snagging.
  • Banana Republic shirred blouse ($40): I loved this top in black (part of last month’s haul) and couldn’t resist this pumpkin shade for fall. It can be worn as an off-the-shoulder blouse.
  • dee elle smocked swing dress ($29): You already know that this is my favorite purchase of the month (as seen here). I went up a size, given the junior’s size chart.
  • LOFT doubleweave “Riviera” shorts ($18): I’m really surprised these are still available in all sizes. The length is perfect (not too modest, but not too juvenile) and they have just the right amount of stretch to help them retain their shape all day. I wore them for our drive back from Louisville and they didn’t look terrible after eight hours of sitting. If you’re between sizes, opt for the smaller one. The legs are cut wider, which is nice for ladies with larger thighs. Nothing is worse than sitting down and having the hem cut into you! I’m now on the lookout for a sweater in this color for a matching set. Let me know if you find one!
  • LOFT boho halter top ($60): This was an impulse buy when I stopped at the store specifically for shorts. The cutout design might be too revealing on some, but it’s subtle with a nude bra and high-waisted bottom.

“MEDICAL EXPENSES”
Let’s be serious, I would never have purchased sneakers if I wasn’t instructed to do so by my doctor. I needed supportive footwear with shock absorbency for the final month healing.

BudgetUpdateJuly2015v4

  • Puma suede sneakers ($60): I have the Puma suede sneakers in navy and red from a collaboration last month, but I didn’t find the color combination versatile enough for my work wardrobe. I went with black to wear with my basic skirts and pants. It hasn’t been a very fashionable summer at the office, but at least my feet are protected!
  • Converse Jack Purcell sneakers ($80): I also picked up a pair of white leather sneakers to go with summer dresses (canvas is too flimsy). I hated the round laces and used a regular set instead. You can see them styled here.

GIFTED
As always, I want to be transparent about what I’ve received from companies for review or as part of a collaboration. I’m selective about the pieces I accept and will only work with companies I feel good about recommending.

BudgetUpdateJuly2015v6

  • Kate Spade “Carima” loafers c/o Shopbop: Speckled. Snakeskin-embossed. Loafers. They’re pretty amazing.

UP NEXT
I hate to start breathing a word about autumn until we’re through August, but it is time to start making fall wish lists. Judging by my private Pinterest shopping board, I’m looking forward to a wardrobe of grey, black, navy, white, and blush. There’s a very strong chance that I’ll add this Chloe knockoff to my closet next month. I also have a growing wish list at J.Crew with this skirt, a skort, and a cute short-sleeve top. (Fingers crossed for a sale!) I’d like to try on this LOFT dress, too.

DIDN’T WORK OUT
Of course, with every successful shopping month, there are some misses:

  • LOFT t-back trapeze dress: This dress was a tad snug across the chest. I didn’t love it enough to try another size.
  • LOFT stripe trim dress: Meh. The shirttail hem wasn’t great in person.
  • Tory Burch purse (as seen here): It was a tough decision to send this one back. In theory, it was perfect. I loved the color, the shape, the textured leather…but something didn’t sit well. I appreciate everyone’s advice! I don’t have any regrets about giving it up.
  • Steve Madden “Ezeke” sneakers: Before I picked the Jack Purcell sneakers, I tried the white slip-on shoes from Steve Madden. They were too chunky and stiff. They were also hard to get on my swollen foot. I had them for less than five minutes before I packed them up and put them in the outgoing mailbox.
  • Topshop striped sweater dress: This dress would be darling on the right person. My hips are too wide to pull this one off.

Budget Update

June 30, 2015 by jessica 16 Comments

BudgetUpdateJune2015v1

I started the month with the best of intentions, but then found myself fed up with my summer work wardrobe and “I have nothing to wear!” days becoming more frequent. Most of my work wardrobe was more appropriate for cooler months, leaving me with casual pieces I’ve been repurposing for the workplace. I dreaded getting dressed Monday through Friday because I had no idea what to wear and was growing tired of the same ensembles. And with that, a sizable order was placed with J.Crew, a Tory Burch dress was justified, and my wardrobe got a whole lot more versatile. So, yes, I went completely and utterly overboard with my budget. And you know what? I don’t care. I can’t remember the last time I purchased truly professional clothes. I considered giving myself a pass this month–mostly because I was too embarrassed to add it all up–but that seems like cheating. I present to you, the monthly list of what I spent money on instead of investing in my IRA.

  • – $48 deficit from last month
  • + $400 added to the budget this month (And yet I still went over…)
  • – $704 spent this month
  • = $102 deficit

PURCHASED

  • Express chambray off-the-shoulder trapeze dress ($60): Love. It. See it well-ironed here on here and less so here.
  • J.Crew embroidered mosaic pull-on shorts ($39): I doubt I would have kept these if my foot wasn’t broken. In fact, I haven’t worn them out of the house yet. I think I was just enamored with them because I could put them on over my cast. I went with a size small, which is absurd. My booty is not a small. Go down a size or two.
  • Steve Madden “Antler” flat sandal ($70): I may only be able to wear one sandal right now, but I sure do love it! It looks like the leather will patina nicely and they’re comfortable. Some reviewers said that the toe strap gave them blisters. I didn’t have that problem. I’m antsy to wear the left sandal now!
  • Trina Turk flower pendant with a red center via eBay ($36): I had the pleasure of trying a Trina Turk piece in my Rocksbox last month and was impressed with the quality, so I went to eBay to add a piece to my collection.
  • ASHA By ADM earrings ($75): What can I say? I’m a sucker for a sample sale. I’ve wanted a piece from ASHA for a long time, but her pieces are on the pricey side. The earrings are absolutely beautiful, even if they’re heavy.
  • J.Crew chevron-striped dress ($103): I went with my regular size 8 in this dress. It fits perfectly around the waist, but the top is too large. I have this problem with most dresses and will need to take a trip to the tailor once my cast is off. The flirty peekaboo cutout is my favorite part.
  • J.Crew “Jackie” cardigan sweater in navy ($46): I have more navy in my closet than black, so I opted for the neutral to mix and match for chilly days at work.
  • J.Crew “Jackie” shell ($34): Conservative and looks cute with skirts and pants. Win, win!
  • J.Crew mélange herringbone skirt ($128): I was hesitant to purchase this skirt since it was excluded from J.Crew’s recent promotions, but I’m so glad I gave it a shot. I love the pleats and the fabric pairs nicely with other work favorites. See it here.
  • Tory Burch ponté dress ($113): Isn’t it amazing how a good sale brings some items to the forefront? I barely noticed this dress when it was available for full price. It’s quite lovely, though. The knit is heavy, allowing it to be form-fitting without being revealing. It’s no longer available for such a low price. Stalk it at Bloomingdale’s and Saks.
  • Banana Republic shirred blouse ($0 with Gap Rewards): I’ve gone on about this blouse long enough.
  • Old Navy high-rise soft shorts ($0 with Gap Rewards): I would have never kept these if they weren’t free. The quality is surprisingly shoddy, even for Old Navy. However, they are incredibly soft and look okay after a good ironing. The waist tie is stitched under the back belt loop. I took a seam ripper to it because it added too much bulk under shirts.

BudgetUpdateJune2015v2

GIFTED
As always, I want to be transparent about what I’ve received from companies for review or as part of a collaboration. I’m selective about the pieces I accept and will only work with companies I feel good about recommending.

  • Puma sneakers c/o KicksUSA
  • Karen Walker c/o Shopbop
  • Spiked Pendant c/o Happiness Boutique
  • Velvet by Graham & Spencer “Ora” top c/o Garnet Hill

UP NEXT

I do need to buy another pair of practical shoes to wear when my cast is off. I’m thinking a pair of white slip-on sneakers that I could wear with dresses. After that, I’m going for a month of no shopping (or almost no shopping). Wish me luck! And don’t tempt me with your adorable blogs and outfit photos. 😉

[spacer]

DIDN’T WORK OUT

Of course, with every successful shopping month, there are some misses:

  • Fallen Star off-the-shoulder swing dress: Everything I hate about fast-fashion stores (human rights considerations aside) is in this dress: cheap fabric, poor construction, and questionable sizing. If your judgement is clouded by the print, be sure to go up at least one size.
  • Zara off-the-shoulder embroidered dress: This was adorable! I tried a medium, but a small would have had plenty of room. I didn’t keep it because it looked so similar to the Michael Kors version I bought last month, which I like quite a bit more.

Budget Update

BudgetUpdateMayl2015v3

Confession: I love betting on horses. When the Derby rolled around, I bet $30 and won a total of $50. I left that money in my account for the Preakness, bet the same initial $30 and won an additional $260. This, my friends, made up for last month’s ridiculous deficit and gave me plenty of money to play with for my birthday month. (Let’s hope my winning streak continues through the Belmont Stakes!) Sure, gambling profits make my budget a tad questionable this month, but I’ll take it. 😉

See all of the year’s wardrobe additions here.

THE BUDGET

Each month, I’ve earmarked $250 to spend on clothing and accessories. I consider blog revenue and eBay sales to be “fun money” (along with gambling winnings, evidently) and will add a portion of that additional income to my monthly budget (if it doesn’t end up in my travel fund first). I’ll record any budget increases or expenditures here each month. Anything that has been ordered and has not yet arrived will appear on the next budget update. I’m also allowing any extra money to rollover into the next month.

  • $250 starting budget
  • – $250 deficit from last month
  • + $260 added to the budget this month (winnings from my Preakness wager!)
  • – $308 spent this month
  • = $48 deficit to take into next month

[spacer]

PURCHASED

  • MICHAEL Michael Kors smocked printed chiffon mini dress ($150): I wish this dress was still available because it’s absolutely darling. It also comes in black here and here, but it’s so much cuter in yellow. (I’m planning to do an outfit post with it early next month.)
  • ASTR racerback shift dress ($64): I couldn’t be happier with this dress. I was happy to discover that the colors were more saturated in person than they were in the stock photo. It’s definitely something I’ll reach for throughout the summer. See it in yesterday’s post!
  • J.Crew merino-cotton tunic sweater in atlantic white ($36): This was an impulse purchase during a recent sale and I’m so happy I bought it. The slouchy silhouette looks adorable with shorts on chilly days. I’m also a big fan of the long ribbed cuffs. If the ruby version pops back in a small, I might buy it for Badger game days.
  • J.Crew crepe pull-on shorts in navy ($15): To be honest, I kind of hate these. I bought them when they were on final sale because they looked so cute on Rachelle and Charnele. The drape of the fabric is nice, but I don’t like how they fit. Maybe when I lose more weight?
  • J.Crew Cyprus sandals in white ($43): Even though these are leather, I wouldn’t recommend buying them at full price. They’re a little thin and have zero support. They’re pretty cute, though. Size up if you wear a half size. (Alternatively, there’s this pair in black that I actually think are cuter. They’re also leather and cheaper.)

GIFTED
As always, I want to be transparent about what I’ve received from companies for review or as part of a collaboration. I’m very selective about the pieces I accept and will only work with companies I feel good about recommending.

  • Gerard Yosca necklace
  • Gerard Yosca earrings (not yet online)

[spacer]

UP NEXT
I actually have a few things on their way to me, including this dress, a knockoff of the AG Jeans x Alexa Chung dress I wanted so badly. Rachelle alerted me to it last week and I ordered it within minutes. I loved the look of the original, but couldn’t justify the cost for something so terribly unflattering. I can do $60. Maybe. I also ordered this pair of shorts in navy. I loved last year’s crepe shorts and am hopeful that these will be similar. There’s a good chance I’ll cave and use my Shopbop credits to buy a pair of Karen Walker sunglasses. I’ve always loved the Number One style. I also have $110 in Gap Rewards to use. All of my clothing purchases go on my Banana Republic card, so I rack up a fair amount of points. I tried to use my credits to pre-order the Loeffler Randall Starla sandals before Piperlime closed. They were unable to fulfill my order. I’m not the biggest fan of Banana Republic’s clothing lately, so I might just stock up on Sloan pants in black.

[spacer]

DIDN’T WORK OUT

Of course, with every successful shopping month, there are some misses:

  • MICHAEL Michael Kors off-the-shoulder crochet-trimmed cotton-voile top: This was pretty cute and I would have kept it if it wasn’t sheer. I tried layering a strapless cami underneath, but it defeated the purpose of having a breezy top for scorching summer days.
  • Cameo new day dress: This was gorgeous, but the fit was off. I’ve always struggled with finding the right size in Cameo pieces. Instead of exchanging it for another size, I decided to return it. There’s not a lot of cocktailing in my life and there aren’t any upcoming weddings to attend.

Budget Update

BudgetUpdateApril2015V4

Budget? What budget? Not only did I blow through my monthly budget, I breezed through the rollover amount I accumulated, the “bonus” money added this month, and next month’s allotment. It’s safe to say I’m on a serious shopping ban for awhile. I was actually doing really well until our trip to Florida. We went to Sawgrass Mills, where I bought this dress at the DVF outlet and a top at the Tory Burch outlet. It’s such a rare treat to try things on in-store and I went a little overboard. The only saving grace is that I’m pretty well set for spring and summer clothes now.

See all of the year’s wardrobe additions here.

Each month, I’ve earmarked $250 to spend on clothing and accessories. I’ll record any budget increases or expenditures here each month. Anything that has been ordered and has not yet arrived will appear on the next budget update. I’m also allowing any extra money (or deficit, in this case) to rollover into the next month.

  • $250 starting budget
  • + $220 rollover from last month
  • + $130 added to the budget this month
  • – $850 spent this month
  • = $250 deficit (eep!)

[spacer]

PURCHASED

  • Loeffler Randall “Amelia” sandals ($221): I bought these to wear at Dave’s sister’s wedding with my beloved Erin Fetherston kiss-print dress. They were surprisingly comfortable to wear all evening. I’ll post an outfit photo with them soon.
  • J.Crew pull-on shorts in “Falling Flowers” ($35): I’m always worried that white shorts will be too sheer, but the fabric is nice and thick. Go down a size.
  • J.Crew pleat-front mini skirt in citrus lemon ($67): This is such a flirty mini skirt. The fabric is on the thicker side, which gives the skirt structure and doesn’t lift up every time there’s a breeze. It does wrinkle if you sit down in it all day. I went with my regular size.
  • Lele Sadoughi “Mini Groove” necklace ($40): I snagged this from Piperlime when they had an extra 40% off sale. I also used a gift card and a Gap Reward to bring the price down even further. Trust me, I didn’t need another piece of jewelry, but the price made it irresistible. For the record, I don’t think would be worth full price at $325.
  • DVF “Carpreena” dress in “Lilly Crossing Blue” ($95): This curve-hugging dress is made from a lightweight silk-blend. I’ve already worn it to the office with black tights, but it’s versatile enough to wear on weekends. I suspect it’ll be a summer staple in my wardrobe.
  • Lilly Pulitzer “Elsa” top in “Worth It” ($158): I was already planning to purchase another Elsa tunic next month for my birthday, so I justified this in Palm Beach. I have another one in navy and white chevron that I wear to work almost weekly. They’re extremely comfortable and well made.
  • Tory Burch “Evelyn” top ($100): I’m crazy about the shirt. I’m not sure if you remember what it looked like from last year’s stock images, but it has the prettiest ’60s silhouette with a swingy back. If you’re looking for it on eBay, it runs true to size. The lining is fitted, so don’t be tempted to go down a size because it won’t fit correctly.
  • Lilly Pulitzer x Target halter in “Sea Urchin” ($26): I bought this half expecting to return it. Instead, it was a lovely surprise. The fabric is silky and it’s lined. It hits mid-hip and looks adorable with shorts.
  • Lilly Pulitzer x Target shorts in “Upstream” ($24): These run large and are pretty thin. I doubt I’ll wear them as part of a regular daytime outfit, but they’ll be perfect over a swimsuit.
  • Not Pictured: Old Navy “sweetheart” skinny jeans ($25): I am so not a denim person (as I mentioned here), but I kind of adore these. I wear jeans so infrequently that $25 is about as much as I’d want to spend on them.
  • Not Pictured: Cooperative striped dress ($59): I’m actually on the fence about this purchase. I received a lot of compliments when I wore it, but I hate how it photographs. It’s also the only time I’ve ever disliked pockets in a dress. They add quite a bit of bulk to the hips, so much so that I’m going to sew up the pockets and cut them out. The sizing is true to junior’s sizing.

  • Kenneth Jay Lane stone statement necklace c/o Shopbop
  • Helen Ficalora sterling silver “J” charm necklace

UP NEXT

May is my birthday month. Refraining from shopping entirely seems shortsighted, but I’m still planning to avoid as much temptation as possible. I’d like to pad my savings account, start setting aside money for another vacation (New Mexico seems promising) and a new coffee table, and invest in my IRA. I do have my sponsored shopping credit with Shopbop that I’ll probably put to good use for a birthday gift. There are tons of new additions to the sale section, including the prettiest Tibi ribbon bow pieces. I also really want an off-the-shoulder dress and this cute pineapple necklace.

[spacer]

DIDN’T WORK OUT

Of course, with every successful shopping month, there are some misses:

  • J.Crew “Carrie” cami: This is adorable. The length is perfect and it’s good quality. I had purchased it in an 8, but it was just a tad too snug across the chest. I didn’t have time to reorder it before vacation, but might keep it in mind later this summer when there’s a sale.
  • Alexa Chug x AG Jeans “Honey” ruffle dress: I tried this in a medium, a small, then an extra small. The XS fit the best, but I was just so tired of trying to make it work at that point. It wasn’t the immediate love affair that I’ve had with other items this year. Sartorial relationships shouldn’t be this hard, right?
  • ASOS simple shift dress in coral: This thing was huge.
  • Tory Burch “Erin” skirt: I tried this on in a size 8 when we were in Palm Beach. It was really cute and a good value for the sale price. The 8 fit perfectly in the waist, but was little too snug in the hips. They didn’t have a 10 in stock to try on. I had already spent more than enough money on the trip (obviously) and decided not to order it, especially since it would need alterations for the waist.
  • J.Crew fringe sandals in white: Super fun, right? Unfortunately, they made me feel like I had hairy hobbit toes.
