On the Right Foot: BR Gets a Glow Up, A Food Photographer to Follow, Three Days in Charleston & More!

March 28, 2022 by jessica Leave a Comment

I didn’t watch the Oscars last night — aside from “that clip” between Will Smith and Chris Rock — but I did enjoy seeing the red carpet looks. Zendaya was my favorite of the night.

Here’s where things are at with the main bathroom renovation. The powder room is almost complete and I’m looking for pretty accessories to style it, like a new soap pump.

This food photographer is a new Instagram follow for me. I love her work!

Americans are obsessed with organization, but we really need is less stuff.

This $20 dress looks like it’ll easily become your go-to frock for casual summer days.

Banana Republic is getting a glow up.

A three-day itinerary for Charleston that makes me eager to go back!

This is an awfully chic kid’s room!

We might be calling Machu Picchu the wrong name.

This fragrance is so good that I’ve made it our home’s signature scent with candles and the linen spray.

On the Right Foot: Embracing Vintage Tile, Studying History with Fashion, Spring Garden Ideas & More!

March 21, 2022 by jessica Leave a Comment

Happy first Monday of spring! To celebrate the return of warmer weather, I treated myself to this beauty of a bag. It’s so pretty and eye-catching, and I am just head-over-heels with it! (It’s also available here for 30% off.) It’s refreshing to add a seasonal statement-maker to my closet after two years of schlepping it in yoga pants and sweaters.

On the topic of refreshes, our tile is installed in the powder room and it’s gorgeous! The sink was installed on Friday and we’re hanging the mirror today. The team had used a plumb bob to center the sconce over the sink, however our room isn’t level (#OldHouseProblems) and the sconce is about a half inch too far to the right. So, the team will be scooting that over today so it’s all lined up correctly. They’ve also made a lot of progress on the main bathroom upstairs. It’s all of the behind-the-wall stuff right now, but I’ll share an update later this week. While I love those surprising before-and-after reveal posts as much as the next person, I think it’s important to share snippets of the process for a “real” person with a budget so you know what to expect.

I didn’t realize that some of the characters in Marvelous Mrs. Maisel were based on real people. (Spoiler warning for those who haven’t watched the season four finale.)

Love unique drinkware? Check out these beauties on Etsy. I also like the maker’s heat-resistant glass mugs.

Going monochrome in this bathroom makes the vintage tile feel intentional.

Here’s why you look rough after a bad night’s sleep.

How sweet is this swimsuit?!

I’m determined to practice my gardening skills even more this year and enjoyed scrolling through these ideas.

This made me laugh. We all have that coat that can be worn for just one a day a year!

Have a wonderful week!

On the Right Foot: Creating a Sense of Escapism, One-Pot Pasta Recipes, A Comprehensive Guide to Secondhand Shopping & More!

Happy Monday! I hope your week is off to a great start. Our contractor’s team is continuing to make progress on our powder room this week. Unfortunately we have a supply chain hiccup with our grout, pushing our project back a week. The tile is already laid in mortar (peek at it here), so this week will be priming and painting the powder room and getting the wood trim painted and in place around the window and part of the door. We’ll grout on Friday. Monday will be putting the final pieces of trim in around the floor and setting all of the fixtures so we can finally move to the main bathroom. The process is taking longer than we had anticipated, but it really is looking beautiful and I’m so grateful that we’re in the position to make these improvements to our home.

Even though we don’t have children, I still enjoyed this read on how a pair of toy mice created a welcome sense of escapism during the pandemic.

Last week we went to Harvey House for dinner, which was named one of Esquire’s best new restaurants for 2021. For those of you in the Madison area, it’s worth checking out. It’s expensive, but it’s by far some of the best service I’ve had, and the meal and drinks were both exceptional. Plus, they have matchboxes if you’re also into that sort of thing!

I just love glassware and treated myself to a pair of these glasses after admiring them all of last year. They’re even better in person!

16 one-pot pasta recipes.

I had no idea how tile was spaced before the introduction of plastic spacers. This was really interesting!

I’m obsessing over these oversized floral statement earrings.

Enjoy the week!

If you’d like to help Ukraine, here’s a list of organizations to support.

For fellow former Gap employees, here’s a fun trip down memory lane by way of the brand’s in-store playlists from the ’90s and early ’00s.

Here’s where things are at with our powder room remodel. The walls are going up today!

On the Right Foot: The Battiest Love is Blind Cast Member, Airport Cocktails, Why You Need to Check Your Avocado’s Origin & More!

February 21, 2022 by jessica Leave a Comment

Cocktail Glasses | Cocktail Picks

On Friday, we celebrated the end of our first week renovating — and let me tell you that it was a doozy. It wasn’t so much an issue with the project; that went smoothly enough. We decided to go ahead and replace all of our antiquated plumbing with new PVC pipes. The old galvanized pipes will continue to corrode as time goes on, so it made sense to add that to the scope of our project while the walls were open. The kicker was that I tested positive for COVID on Tuesday despite being vaxxed and boosted. Talk about the worst timing! I’m grateful that the contractor’s team was still willing to do the work so long as Dave and I stayed quarantined upstairs. (We started the renovation with our first floor powder room.) The plumbing is being finished today and the inspector comes tomorrow, so we can close up the walls and get to the pretty stuff once that’s signed off on!

A few things that caught my eye recently.

The romance of drinking at an airport bar. (Airport drinking is undoubtedly my top not-so-guilty pleasure.)

No, avocados won’t keep you from buying a home, but avocado farms may be linked to deforestation — all the more reason to make sure your avocados are ethically farmed.

Lilac and red are one of my favorite color combinations, which has put this blouse at the top of my wish list. Those unexpected cutout details are just icing on the cake!

This is neat: hard-to-recycle plastics are now being made into “concrete” blocks.

So true.

Are you watching season two of Love is Blind? It’s batty. And this spoiler-filled recap is too good not to share.

Have a fun week!

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
