15 Festive Finds for New Year’s Eve

December 22, 2021 by jessica Leave a Comment

If you haven’t ordered gifts by now, they’re not coming in time for Christmas, so let’s turn our attention to the most sparkly night of the year: New Year’s Eve. We finally get to say sayonara to the letdown that 2021 turned out to be! And, hey, I get it if we’re collectively traumatized by the last two years and unwilling to get too excited to ring in 2022 lest we jinx it, but it can’t hurt to set the new year off on the right foot! Here are 15 festive finds to celebrate the dawn of a new year:

  1. A sparkly tweed bag.
  2. This is the dress I bought for NYE.
  3. A dreamy light pink organza dress
  4. Vintage glasses with silver rims. I love this set!
  5. If card games are your thing, up the ante with a metallic set.
  6. An ice bucket is a must. Do you prefer marble and brass or wood grain?
  7. A swipe of shimmery eyeshadow.
  8. A metallic bow frame clutch that comes in a rich emerald green.
  9. Serve dessert in these darling coupes. I’m torn between the peach and blue options.
  10. Keeping it casual? Top it off with a knit beanie topped with a sequin pom-pom.
  11. Eye-catching earrings. (These are also stunning and more budget-friendly.)
  12. Sequin shirts can veer into going-out-top territory quickly. This one is elegant, however.
  13. Fancy flats. (Plus more options!)
  14. A resin and crystal bracelet that’s worth the splurge.
  15. If you’re leaving the house, this one is for you: a cozy faux fur coat to keep warm in the cold.

The Coveted: The Holiday Party Edit

December 4, 2021 by jessica Leave a Comment

ONE | TWO | THREE | FOUR | FIVE | SIX | SEVEN | EIGHT | NINE

I don’t know about you, but I am so ready to add special pieces to my closet after nearly two years of uninspired dressing for a stay-at-home lifestyle. I couldn’t resist that sequin dress (above) during the Black Friday sales weekend and it’s gorgeous in person! And, as a happy surprise, the lining is actually an A-line shape, too! (In the past, BR dresses would often have a slim lining despite being an A-line or trapeze-style dress. It’s kind of the worst for ladies with hips.) The skirt above is in the same material and would look darling with a cozy sweater!

The real star of the show in this roundup, though, is this bag! It’s definitely a splurge, but it’s one of those special occasion pieces you really will use forever.

12 Pairs of Fancy Flats for the Holiday Season

December 1, 2021 by jessica Leave a Comment

If you’ve been following along for awhile, you’ll know that my love of flats runs deep. It’s no different at the holidays when I’d rather opt for a pair of shoes I can dance in all night than wear a pair of heels that leave my feet aching a couple of hours in! My sole (pun absolutely intended) purchase over on Black Friday was this tinsel-tweed pair from Kate Spade. They’re so much fun! I can already tell they’ll be a holiday staple with both dresses and my beloved jeans-and-an-oversized-sweater combo for family gatherings. (The reviews are all over the place in terms of sizing. I found that they ran true to size for me. They’re a little snug in the toe box, but that’s to be expected for a pointed pair.)

If you’re also a fan of fancy flats, here are 12 party-perfect pairs:

Things I Bought & Loved in November

November 24, 2021 by jessica Leave a Comment

In addition to the items below, I had ordered two items from J.Crew that were huge misses: this dress that ran small in the bodice despite the smocked back (plus, the quality did not warrant the price tag); and this blouse that was the most unflattering shape on me. Oh well, they can’t all be winners, right? Here are the items that made the cut this month:

IN THE WARDROBE
See this year’s sartorial additions here.

  • Karen Walker ‘Number One’ sunglasses in tan/gold – I have these sunglasses in black and tortoiseshell and they remain my favorites, so adding another color when they were on sale seemed like a worthwhile investment in my sunglasses wardrobe.
  • Marc New York ‘Paige’ boucle coat in camel (also available here) – My goal to lose weight this year was largely unsuccessful and I needed a heavier-yet-dressy coat that I could wear this season. This one has a flattering, classic shape and runs true to size. I can’t attest to how warm it is yet, but I was comfortable in it for a long walk with a sweater underneath in 30-degree weather. (I had also tried this coat from the same brand. It’s longer and I preferred the pocket placement, but I was between sizes. The medium was too small to wear with a sweater and I was drowning in the large.)
  • J.Crew supersoft turtleneck sweater in camel – This was my favorite sweater for two years running, but J.Crew reworked the shape and added vents on the sides making it a lot less flattering than it used to be. It’s still incredibly comfortable, which is the only reason I kept it. However, if you loved the version from the last couple of years, this isn’t it.

AROUND THE HOUSE

  • Reindeer cocktail picks – I randomly came across these on Amazon and it was a quick add-to-cart moment. They’re so darn cute and are good quality.
  • Wood Christmas trees – I found these on Etsy when I was looking for a few Scandinavian-inspired Christmas decorations for our office bookshelf. I bought a large one in natural and a smaller one in green. They’re absolutely darling in person and perfect for an understated holiday touch.
  • Happy Holidays doormat – I impulse purchased this doormat at Target and for $13, it’s perfect!

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
