The Weekend Guide 09.03.16

BUDGET
I sift through my lingerie drawer approximately once a year and toss anything that’s worn out, doesn’t fit correctly, or just isn’t loved anymore. I’m just about to embark on that annual project and loved reading this post about budgeting in order to spend money on one of life’s indulgent, little luxuries: good lingerie. (And, speaking of lingerie, if you know of any great bra brands, please share. Victoria’s Secret seems to discontinue my favorites each year and I’m back to square one with shopping.)

KNOW
As much as I love Harper’s Bazaar, I can’t stand the “Fabulous at Any Age” feature. I’m delighted to know that my fashion icon Iris Apfel agrees that dressing for your age is “stupid.”

CONSIDER
When you’re tasked with shopping on a limited budget, you’re forced to carefully consider any purchase. However, shopping regrets still occur.

SIP
Spend the last weekend of summer poolside sipping frosé.

LEARN
Sales are slipping at many women’s stores and it may come down to one thing: poorly made clothing.

CAMPAIGN
I’m all about three-day weekends and I’ve always been convinced that I go back to work more refreshed and motivated to tackle just as much work over the following four days as I’d get done in five. It seems that science agrees. Now, who do we petition to make it a thing?

EARLIER THIS WEEK
Cleaning up with a robotic vacuum. (Bonus: cute photos of Bacon.)
August’s sartorial spending recap.
My new favorite cocktail dress.
A few things I have my eye on.

The Weekend Guide 08.27.16

I’m sorry I’m late with this weekend’s guide! I sat down to work on it yesterday and found myself suddenly motivated to sift through our photos from our spring vacation Denmark, edit them, and create a Facebook album to share with family and friends. I’ll share some of them here soon with the travel guide I’m working on. Hopefully, it’ll be next week!

LEARN
Nailing the perfect outfit Instagram isn’t easy, but Marianna breaks it down with ten tips for making your #OOTD stand out.

COO
These photos are probably the cutest things you’ll see all day.

KNOW
The world’s largest diamond was expected to sell for over the $100 million reserve at auction, and yet, it struggled to close at $61 millon. This article offers insights into why that may have happened, along with some background into the diamond industry.

ANTICIPATE
The Coveteur is coming out with a book this October! I can’t wait to get my hands on the coffee table eye candy.

SHOP
We’ve been keeping our eye out for furniture we’d love to buy as we continue with our house hunt. Some things, like a king-size bed and mattress, will happen now (so excited!) and others will be put on the back burner until we close. I’ve bookmarked Kirsten’s post with 30 affordable dining room chairs to reference when we’re finally ready to take the plunge.

MOURN
Fashion icon Sonia Rykiel passed away last week at the age of 86.

EARLIER THIS WEEK
Daydreamed about a tropical vacation in this outfit.
Coveted a sophisticated collection of jewel tones.
Went “Behind the Baubles” with Lisi Lerch.

GAIN
Interior designers always have the inside scoop on the best places to scout out home decor. Here are seven shops to keep on your radar.

MEET
There’s a new class of CDFA Fashion Incubator designers. Meet them here. (I can’t pick a favorite!)

READ
Have you watched Stranger Things yet? We wrapped up the season last week. I didn’t love it the way some people did, but still really enjoyed the season and its nod to ’80s horror motifs.

SHOP
Tory Burch’s Private Sale is coming to a close today. I picked up a merino wool knit cap topped with a fluffy fur pom pom. Whether we want to admit it or not, it’ll be winter eventually. (How’s that for pessimism?)

TRAVEL
I’m all about visiting local markets when I’m overseas, so I’m bookmarking this one if we ever find ourselves in Paris.

SIP
This is probably the prettiest smoothie I’ve ever seen and it’s made with natural ingredients.

EARLIER THIS WEEK
Took part in a Clutter Cleanse Challenge.
Coveted more pre-fall pieces.
Wore a wooden watch.
Added a vintage snake necklace to my collection.
Floated away with this cutie.
Headed up north to visit my parents and will be attending the Tall Ships Festival in Duluth today!

PLUS, ENTER TO WIN!
There’s still time to enter to win a travel atomizer from Travalo valued at $50!

REALIZE
This study makes perfect sense when you remember that everyone has a different definition of friendship, but even so, half of the people you consider a friend might not reciprocate those feelings. Isn’t that depressing?

CONSIDER
I’ve found myself pinning and wish listing items in this rosé-meets-salmon hue for a few months now. Apparently it’s beloved by other Millennials, too. One person’s comment sums it up beautifully, “We need a transitional color out of the neutral black and white palette of 2012-2015 and this bridges the gap quite nicely.”

ANTICIPATE
I have never been more excited about a television show in my life.

LEARN
The launch of Frances Valentine received a quieted buzz of excitement, but you would have thought the return of Kate Spade herself would have made more of a splash. As it turns out, that marketing move was very much intentional.

RENOVATE
Kelly’s post about the realities of gutting and renovating a bathroom made me less apprehensive about embarking on the project when we finally buy a home.

KNOW
In an effort to reverse slipping sales numbers, Tiffany & Co. is giving its iconic “Return to Tiffany” collection a makeover for a new generation.

EARLIER THIS WEEK
Wore the best summer-to-fall dress.
Coveted a selection of pretty pink items plus a funky calf hair clutch.
Shared how you can travel with your signature scent.
Launched a giveaway!
Celebrated International Cat Day.
Admired the dome of the Wisconsin State Capitol.

KNOW
The Zika virus has officially hit Florida and now the state must brace for the impact on its tourism industry.

PEEK
I loved going to the fabric store with my mom when I was young, and spent most of the time pouring over the vast array of possibilities in the McCall pattern book. (It was one of my motivations to learn how to sew!) Here’s a peek into the the company.

LEARN
Manu Atelier’s bags are quickly rising to It bag status. Learn more about the Turkish designer here and then shop the bags here. I’m crazy about this blue suede fringe number that’s sold out. Fingers crossed that it gets restocked!

LUST
How amazing are these?! However, I have no place to wear them — and no closet space for something so impractical! This tempting fur bag would get a lot more use.

DECORATE
Making your home look expensive doesn’t have to break the bank.

SIP
Booze and Greek yogurt? I’m in breakfast cocktail heaven!

EARLIER THIS WEEK
Got sporty with Stan Smith sneakers and a jersey dress.
Coveted the best late-summer pieces.
Enjoyed the sweetest subscription box yet.
Bought this dress. It looks so good with these.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
