The Weekend Guide

DECORATE
Update your bedroom with eight rules normally reserved for your wardrobe. I love the idea of channeling a resort destination.

KNOW
Office arguments can heat up quickly. Here’s what to say for productive confrontations — and when to keep your mouth shut.

BAKE
Pastries are going to be so much cuter with the cacti print this rolling pin leaves behind.

ADD
When I think of penguins, I think of long expanses of snow-covered tundra and icy oceans — not lush islands off the coast of Australia. Macquarie Island is home to hundreds of thousands of penguins. It’s also the only breeding ground for royal penguins on earth with an estimated 850,000 breeding pairs residing on the island.

ANTICIPATE
Starbucks’ must-have drink of autumn has a later release date this year. (Don’t shoot the messenger.)

WATCH
As a society, we’re addicted to fast fashion. This documentary shows us the real cost of cheap clothing. Read an interview with the director here.

EARLIER THIS WEEK
Getting candid about my budget.
A top with pretty little details.
A roundup of this week’s most covetable items. (I really want the cape.)
Amazing Elizabeth and James sunglasses in the week’s Five Under $55.
Finally transitioning back to sandals!

CONSIDER
For years, we’ve known that women who wear makeup are treated more favorably and earn more money. What other costs are hiding in the so-called “Makeup Tax?”

COOK
We made these spicy Thai noodles last week. So. Good. I’d like to suggest a couple of changes, however. Namely, another tablespoon of Sriracha and rice noodles instead of linguine noodles. We also made this margarita shredded chicken for tacos (equally delicious) and a cucumber radish salad (not great).

EXTEND
Gray Malin’s photographs make me almost as happy as summer does. Keep those blissful feelings for as long as possible with one of his new prints.

DIY
Transfer your herbs to these chic do-it-yourself gold leaf planters. You’ll appreciate how pretty these look when the first frost hits and you’re forced to bring your plants indoors.

CHOOSE
Buying sunglasses online can be daunting. This guide can point you in the right direction.

SHARE
Life isn’t one big Instagram filter of sunshine, lattes, and vacations. #TotalHonestyTuesday challenges people to get real.

EARLIER THIS WEEK
My favorite top to wear on vacation.
A must-have list that illustrates my end-of-summer aesthetic.
Treating myself to a new dress. (Snag it for $50 here.)
Celebrating #WorldElephantDay.
Is a $200 curling iron worth it?
This week’s top five under $55.

BUY
It’s a little early for holiday shopping, but I have Arrow + Sage bookmarked for unique gifts this year. I’m obsessed with the pretty ceramic planters.

SHOP
I’ve been going a little overboard with spending this year and not always on items I’m crazy about a few months later. Here are tips to shop like a stylist — on a budget — to keep your wardrobe in check.

ANTICIPATE
With Brad Goreski at the helm, C. Wonder will relaunch next spring on QVC.

READ
Be one of the first to read Garance Doré’s book, Love Style Life, when it’s released on Oct. 27.

LEARN
Hair doesn’t always react to heat the same way. One mechanical engineer is taking it upon herself to study the science of curly hair.

KNOW
Your DSLR’s manual mode can be a little intimidating. Get acquainted with the basics and start practicing this weekend.

EARLIER THIS WEEK
This week’s five finds under $55.
Nine acres of sunflowers.
Mini moments from July.
My favorite face care products.
Learning to embrace sneakers with dresses.
Meeting up with Fran for cocktails.
A scalloped leather bag to obsess over.

DECORATE
Here’s a fab DIY for all of you renters because white walls and beige carpet can be pretty dull.

SIP
A tropical spiked smoothie.

STOP
Do you ever get a twinge of Instagram jealousy when someone else has more followers or more likes? Do you wonder if you should post more photos of flowers, beaches, and perfect latte foam to fix that? Well, stop.

ANTICIPATE
Here’s a sneak peek at Tory Sport, debuting this month.

LEARN
I begged my parents for the American Girl doll Molly in the months leading up to my 10th birthday. I’m sure they were tired of listening to me talk about that doll every evening at dinner because they caved. While this piece insists that Molly was just a stand-in for Samantha, I knew differently. Molly was cool. She had pants.

SHOP
The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale ends on Sunday. I’d recommend picking up this necklace. It’s one of my favorites and layers well with other pieces. If you’re done with your clothing and accessory orders, it’s a good time to stock up on beauty favorites that you’ll order eventually anyway. I’m planning to replenish my supply of face lotion. I’m also thisclose to ordering this dress. I have 16 days left in sneakers before I can wear sandals and it would be such a pretty dress to celebrate in.

EARLIER THIS WEEK
I featured an adorable $29 dress.
Madewell finally opened in Madison.
Here’s where my money went last month.
Behind the Baubles with Majdan Rocks.
I met 50 Cent.

LOSE
If you need another reason to add Italy to your must-visit list, you can now wander around the world’s largest maze.

EMBROIDER
Add a tiny embroidered design to your Instagrams to make them even more special.

READ
Europe has been in the news quite a bit this summer. Read these tips before boarding your transatlantic flight.

ACCEPT
Ten truths about money. (Thanks to Rachelle for linking to it last week!)

DISCOVER
This article ponders the reasons we still love Gilmore Girls, even though it has been off the air for eight years. I’m thinking of starting the series from the beginning just so I can listen to the Gilmore Guys podcast with the episodes still fresh in my mind.

BAKE
Put that summer produce to good use with this raspberry rhubarb tart. Although, if you’re afraid of bears, you might be better off with a classic strawberry rhubarb pie.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
