The Coveted

The Coveted 06.04.18

ONE | TWO | THREE | FOUR | FIVE | SIX | SEVEN | EIGHT | NINE

When I came across this linen skirt, it reminded me so much of the dress I wore in yesterday’s post that I just had to include it this week’s “The Coveted” roundup. It would look darling with a white camisole and leather slides, like these or these, and a rich brown bag. The net tote bag above is obviously inspired by Staud’s of-the-moment bucket bag, but at a much more affordable price for those just looking to dapple in the trend. There’s also this bag if you’d like a more-than-just-inspired-by (ahem, knock off) version.

My Favorite Dress in Austin

June 4, 2018 by jessica Leave a Comment

What to Wear in Austin, TX

This dress was undoubtedly my favorite thing to wear in Austin, so much so that I wore it our first full day in the city and then again another afternoon. I bought it last year from Urban Outfitters and the cotton dress is so breezy and, better yet, doesn’t need a bra. It’s amazing how much cooler you feel once you ditch a thick layer of foam! Now, I realize that not everyone is able to pull that off (it’s one of the perks of having a small chest), so I put together a roundup of some of my favorite pro-bra and anti-bra dresses from the retailer below. (I don’t know about you, but I never think to shop at Urban Outfitters until I need an inexpensive summer dress, and they’re a gold mine of hot-weather frocks. This one is my favorite of those linked in the widget below because of the pretty green and white pattern. I’m also a fan of this one.)

What to Wear in Austin, TX

Urban Outfitters dress (old; similar, love this one) | Tory Burch tote (old; I wasn’t able to find a similar one, but it’s the “Kerrington” style if you’d like to search on eBay.) | Sam Edelman sandals (also love these) | Wendy Mink earrings (c/o; similar here and here) | Dolce & Gabbana sunglasses (old; similar)

Easy Tiger in Austin, TX

Hello! We’re back after a few days in Austin and while I’m happy to be home, I’m already missing the pastries at Easy Tiger! (Our neighborhood donut shop has nothing on their pain au chocolat.) It’s expected to be a relatively chilly weekend here with highs in the low 70s, which sounds terribly cold after simmering away in 100-degree heat with humidity, but it’ll be perfect for bike rides around town. Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Weekend Links:

  • TIME magazine’s amazing cover.
  • Grace’s photo diary of her trip to Cuba is incredible. I’d love to visit!
  • This retro-inspired suede mini dress is gorgeous. Is it too early to shop for pre-fall?
  • We’re heading to Portland at the end of the month, so this travel guide came at the perfect time! Let me know if you have any recommendations for things to see and do while we’re there! (It’s a work trip for Dave, so I’ll have some time to myself to shop and Instagram cute coffee shops.)
  • Fifteen online sources for the art lover on a budget.
  • Last Saturday, we had a “house crawl” with our friends in the neighborhood. Each house was responsible for a drink and a snack, which turned into one heck of a boozy afternoon. This recipe for a pitcher of palomas was a huge hit! (And I may have picked up a couple of packages of these flamingo swizzle sticks, too.)
  • There are some changes on the horizon for J.Crew.
  • I saw this teal ottoman in the store and it’s so pretty. (If only it would work in our mid-century modern space.)
  • We binge-watched Netflix’s Safe in two days.
  • I need more veggie-packed dinner recipes and this vegan coconut curry looks like a good one to try!

Finds Under $50:

  • This cute top reminds me of something you’d find at Madewell.
  • How cute are these bow-topped wedge espadrilles?
  • I love the colors of this striped maxi dress.
  • Haven’t found the perfect straw bag yet? How about this clutch with faux bamboo handles?
  • I just ordered a second set of these glasses. I bought the first set around the holidays with a rewards coupon and had another one for my birthday, so I figured I’d expand my collection. They look chic and have a subtle blush cast to the glass.

Earlier This Week:

  • What I added to my wardrobe in May.
  • I went to Austin where I saw the state capitol building, creeped on kayakers, celebrated my birthday, and took a dip in the pool to beat the record heat.

Wardrobe Update: May 2018

J.Crew Mercantile faux-wrap mini dress

I’m two months into my newfound budget restrictions and I’m still going strong! (Albeit with a $4 deficit.) This month was all about adding a few lightweight dresses to my collection, including one I’ve crushed on since its debut, which made my wish list go down to just one single item: this Jenny Bird pendant. I’m not sure if I’ll pull the trigger this month, though. We have a trip to Portland on the books for the end of the month and I feel like all of my disposable income is going to go to Schoolhouse Electric when I visit the store!

TOTAL SPENT: $235
(Budget: $200; $31 added from last month; subtracting $4 next month)

PURCHASED
See all of this year’s sartorial additions here.

  • Tory Burch silk scarf ($18) – I received a $50 coupon to use for my birthday month and decided to put it toward this adorable silk square. The four different patterns make it so that you can change the look from a floral design to a geometric one based on how you tie it.
  • Leith racerback shift dress in navy ($29; worn here) – I love the black version of this dress (worn here) that I had to buy it in navy. I’ve been wearing these two dresses to work just about every week. They’re machine washable, too!
  • J.Crew Mercantile faux wrap dress in fresh daisies ($60; worn here) – This little number runs true to size. The bust is a bit on the larger side, though, and it falls open if you don’t maintain good posture despite the hook and eye closure. I love it with slip-on espadrilles and sneakers, but it’s adorable with ballet flats, too.
  • Madewell denim pintuck cami dress ($128) – I had been crushing on this dress ever since I first saw it on the Madewell site. I was waiting for it to go on sale, but once I realized the size run was selling out at both Nordstrom and Shopbop, I had to hit “add to cart” to see how I felt about it in person. Love. It. The pintuck pleats and bust detailing make it so much more interesting than your run-of-the-mill sun dress. It runs true to size.
  • Warby Parker ‘Nancy’ sunglasses in pink & no-name gold and white hoop earrings in Austin ($0) – Birthday gifts! Dave bought the earrings for me while we were out and about. (I’ll post them in an outfit post soon!) The sunglasses are from my parents — sort of. They send me a birthday check each year, and this year my mom specifically requested that I buy something for myself and not the household. I put part of the check toward the sunglasses while we were in Austin and deposited the rest into my travel savings account.

DIDN’T WORK OUT
Things I tried and didn’t love.

  • BB Dakota ‘Luciana’ maxi dress – The polyester lining felt like it would oppressively hot on steamy days.
  • Soludos espadrille wedges – I’ve been thinking about buying these for a couple of years now and really hoped that they’d be a comfortable option when I want a bit of height. I followed the recommendations to go down a half size and found the toe box too tight and uncomfortable. Back they went.
  • Deepa Gurnani ‘Petaloop’ earrings – I love big earrings, but these were too much even for me.

Gucci bag

Happy Memorial Day weekend! This weekend is going to fly by for us. Today, we’re having a “house crawl” with some of our friends in the neighborhood, which is basically like a bar crawl where each house is serving a drink and a snack. We’re keeping it easy on this sweltering day and going with palomas (although, is tequila ever a good idea?) served with chips and guac. And then we’re off to Austin tomorrow! We rarely travel again so soon after a trip, but flights and hotels were cheap when we booked a few months back — and it seemed like the perfect way to celebrate my 35th birthday! You can follow along on Instagram and I’ll check back here on Friday! Enjoy the long weekend!

Weekend Links:

  • I have been such a fan of Madewell dresses lately. I ordered this one to wear on my birthday and love it. (Of course I couldn’t wait until this coming Wednesday and already wore it. I received more compliments on this dress than any other in recent memory.) I’m thinking about adding this one to my summer wardrobe, too.
  • Floating flowers in a vintage oyster dish is such a good idea.
  • Amelia Bloomer started an accidental fashion revolution in the 1850s and now her name is synonymous with pants.
  • Three spring pasta recipes to try.
  • This is why you’re getting so many privacy policy updates.
  • The cultural history of the ugly sandal.
  • I think I mentioned these enamel plates before, but they’re so cute in person! I purchased a set of dinner plates and the salad plates for summer entertaining.
  • A pina colada recipe that doesn’t require a blender.
  • A weekend playlist.

Finds Under $50:

  • A floral card case.
  • A soft pajama set. (I just purchased this set in black. It runs large.)
  • A pair of satin slides.
  • A striped midi dress.
  • A simple dress that’s best in red.
  • A feminine wrap top.

Earlier This Week:

  • An easy faux wrap dress I’ve been wearing a lot lately.
  • 48 hours in Madison.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
