Weekend Reading 10.28.17

Happy Halloween weekend! We are beyond excited for our first holiday in the house, so much so that we’re going to leave work early on Tuesday so we don’t miss a single Trick-or-Treater! We have some last-minute prep work to do this weekend, though, including pumpkin carving and finishing our costumes. (We’re going as Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf. It’s an easy somewhat-last-minute couple’s costume to pull off!) We’re also toying with the idea of getting a case of mini beer cans or bottles for the adults. (Why should the kids have all the fun?) What are you up to this weekend?

Weekend Reading

  • Celebrate the return of Stranger Things with these viewing party ideas. (Assuming you haven’t binge-watched the entire season yet!)
  • I know we’re all conditioned (pun!) to use conditioner, but I’m in the no-conditioner camp. It makes my hair look sad and limp.
  • Halloween didn’t always have treats.
  • Sorel teamed up with Chloe to make a pair of ultra chic snow boots. I’m bummed they’re already sold out!
  • How to get your home ready for a dinner party. (Our house has such a good flow between the living room, dining room, and deck. We’re hoping that we’ll have these areas at a good point next year to host a holiday gathering or two!)
  • Seeing Alicia Silverstone revisit her iconic plaid ensemble from Clueless made my day.
  • An off-the-shoulder sweater is an unexpectedly sexy way to get cozy. (Here’s another great option if that one sells out in your size. It looks like it’s popular!)
  • Is it time for Bacon to have his own bedroom furniture? Would that make me too much of a crazy cat lady?
  • This clear pumpkin pie is waiting for its Instagram moment. (There’s even a recipe for it!)
  • These are on my wish list for fall.

Five Under $50

  • Can you believe this chic mini bag is only $27?!
  • I’m loving the ruffles on this cami. (You could easily dress up the black one for the holidays!)
  • Wear dark floral palazzo pants with a slinky black cami this holiday season.
  • A pretty bell-sleeve top.
  • Earrings that look like modern art.

Earlier This Week:

  • Baubles on a budget.
  • A few items on our radar this month.
  • We took Monday and Tuesday off this week and hung out with this guy.
  • Bought a new houseplant. (I’m addicted.)
  • More weekend links over at Curated Couple.

Baubles on a Budget: Under $75

Baubles on a Budget: Under $75

Happy Monday! If you’re dragging this morning, there are two things that are guaranteed to perk up the start of the week: a Venti coffee (of course) and a new piece of jewelry at a wallet-friendly price point. I’m into bold conversation-starting pieces lately. (How amazing is that pin?! It looks even better when paired with this pout.) Here are nine of my favorite gems that all come in at under $75.

Top Row
Bauble Bar earrings | Jenny Bird earrings | Sibilia earrings

Middle Row
Jenny Bird pin | Sibilia earrings | Anthropologie necklace

Bottom Row
Bauble Bar earrings | Lena Bernard bracelet | Madewell earrings

Weekend Reading

October 21, 2017 by jessica Leave a Comment

I hate just popping in to throw some links your way and then go silent the rest of the week, but goodness, the last couple of weeks have been a doozy! I’m an events manager at a regional business publication and October is my busiest month of the year as we get ready for our annual business expo, which happened on Wednesday. There were plenty of early mornings and late nights at the office, leaving me just enough time to get home in the evening, eat dinner, watch a TV show to unwind, and head to bed. To say I’m exhausted would be an understatement! I’m taking Monday and Tuesday off next week for some R&R and to catch up on a few projects around the house (like finally installing our entryway light fixture which we did this morning and planting tulip bulbs) and plan our Halloween costumes. I can’t tell you how excited I am for a mini break! What are you up to this weekend?

Weekend Reading:

  • Alright, before we talk about anything else, I need to draw your attention to one of my favorite sales of the year. I finally snagged this wooden beaded bag that I was crushing on a few months ago. ($160 is much more reasonable than $428, right?) New items keep popping up, so be sure to check back throughout the weekend. I’m tempted to add these beauties to my collection, too!
  • Speaking of bags, have you perused Coach lately? I still have a weird prejudice against the brand after it was the designer of choice for suburban moms and high school girls. That’s so unfair, isn’t it? Anyway, I found myself browsing the site the other day and fell head-over-heels for this understated little purse. It’s the perfect size for your essentials and looks so polished.
  • A list of the best Halloween movies to watch on Amazon Prime, Hulu, and Netflix.
  • Before your close up your house or apartment for winter, tackle this cleaning checklist.
  • A festive fall cocktail that’s a cinch to make.
  • Can you teach good taste?
  • You’re not imagining it; dogs do use facial expressions to communicate with you.
  • This tiered bell-sleeve top is perfection. I love it in black.
  • Turn grocery store flowers into beautiful bouquets.
  • Don’t forget to toast your pumpkin seeds after carving pumpkins!

Five Under $50:

  • String this quirky charm onto a delicate gold chain.
  • Use code FRIENDS to take 50% off this wrap skirt.
  • Sequin earrings are equal parts ridiculous and amazing. I’m torn between black and pink.
  • This emerald dress is gorgeous.
  • Faux fur stoles are incredibly warm. Get one before winter!

New Orleans | Bedknobs & Baubles

Dave is forever catching me in the act of snapping Instagram photos on my phone! I was looking back at our travel photos from our March trip to New Orleans (the last vacation we’ve been on — I’m itching for something soon!) and laughed at the “behind the scenes” look at this Instagram. We found cheap tickets this fall to NOLA, but it’d be too soon to go back, right? In any case, daydreaming about another adventure is a nice escape from the crazy busy days I’ll have over the next week. Expect me to be just as quiet for another week, but then I’m anxious to start posting again. I have a lot of ideas in the works!

Weekend Reading:

  • It’s Kate Spade Friends & Family time! Take 30% off your purchase with code FRIEND through Sunday, Oct. 15. I usually use this as an opportunity to buy my annual day planner (very old fashioned of me).  I’m also crazy about these boots. They’d be so good with black tights and a short wool dress. These striped loafers are also pretty great, as is this striped peacoat.
  • Processed food gets an unfair bad rap.
  • The Erdem x H&M collaboration looks dreamy!
  • I came across Lauren Williams’ work last week and I just love her bohemian-inspired wall hangings. I’m also all about the velvet lumbar pillow. What a great way to add texture to your bedroom.
  • The holidays are going to sneak up on us this year like they always do! I’ve been doing some early planning by picking cookie recipes (chocolate peppermint crinkle cookies are always a hit), and thinking about decorating our house (love these modern glass trees!).
  • Seven ways to add hygge to your home this fall.
  • How cute are these bow-topped kitten heels? (The black pair is the best.)
  • A museum dedicated to the art of forgery.
  • How Jennifer Fisher packs her jewelry when she travels.
  • Have you seen this awful hack for making peanut butter sandwiches? It has to be a joke, right?
  • I’m not one to wear high heels very often, which you know. But these? I want to wear them with opaque tights and all of my fall/winter dresses! (I keep opening a tab to stare dreamily at them, which means they’ll be on their way to me shortly to at least try in person.)

Five Under $50

  • A sleek shoulder bag. I love the plum option.
  • I can’t get over how much I love the colors and print of this silk scarf.
  • Graphic gold earrings are a statement you can wear with just about everything this season.
  • This smocked halter top is perfect to dress up for the holidays with cigarette pants or wear tucked into bell bottom jeans.
  • I’m not really a sneaker girl, but I’m loving this velvet slip-on pair!

Earlier This Week:

  • Missed out on under $400 tickets to Iceland, since I had to ask permission for PTO. Hoping the low price comes back soon!
  • National Handbag Day is a thing.
  • What we’ve been up to lately. (Spoiler: buying a lot of things for the house.)

Life Lately

Life Lately

This is the busiest time for me at work, which I’m sure you’ve gathered given my radio silence so far this week. It’s hard to set aside time for a hobby when a couple of hours to get through a post means I’ll be burning the midnight oil later that night on the work that pays the bills. Instead of staying completely mum this week, I thought I’d share some of the photos on my phone from the last few weeks. Most of these aren’t edited (our living room walls are white and not that weird cream color), but, hey, I’m crunched for time. 😉 And with that, a little peek into the life of Dave and myself over the last few weeks:

  • Our bar cabinet finally arrived and we couldn’t be happier with it. We haven’t had a chance to style it, but that duck lamp is totally staying on top. (Sources: bar, lamp, pumpkin, planters)
  • Enjoying lazy weekend mornings at home. The blanket isn’t cheap, but it’s such great quality. And I’m loving my new robe.
  • Trying on Halloween masks at Target. I’m still tempted to go back and buy this one. We’ve been throwing around a few costume ideas, but we haven’t settled on one yet. This would make dressing up so much easier. (I can’t wait for our first Halloween with trick-or-treaters!)
  • I think we’ve picked out our wallpaper! We’re going to hire someone to hang it because we’d hate to screw up something so expensive, so I’m going to wait a couple of months until I feel like we won’t be straining our budget to make this happen. (During the flurry of buying things for the house, we also ordered this media console.)
  • We went out for afternoon drinks last Saturday at one of our favorite bars. While I was snapping that leafy photo, a tornado unexpectedly touched down roughly a mile from our house. I’m so thankful that our house is fine. (It was a weak tornado, as far as those things go, and most of the damage was done to trees, signs, and awnings. Phew.) The shoes are from Madewell and required no break-in time.
  • There’s a random tomato plant that sprouted up in the small grassy area between our house and driveway. It’s been producing quite a few cherry tomatoes. It’s a fun surprise, even if it’s not the best place for it!
  • I casually suggested we buy a record player some day so we could adorably play vinyl as we cook together. Apparently when you express an interest in electronics to someone who loves technology, “some day” came awfully soon. Dave bought this turntable, and we’ve now been scouring flea markets and record stores for albums.
  • That bottom middle photo is pretty much what I come home to every day now and I love it. I love when the cat runs to greet me. I love our bar. I love the floors. I love that piece of artwork … that we still need to hang.
  • And our couch arrived!

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
