Things I Bought & Loved in October

October 25, 2023 by jessica Leave a Comment

WARDROBE
See this year’s sartorial additions here.

  • Madewell cashmere oversized crewneck sweater – I’ve wanted an oversized grey cashmere sweater for the past three years, but I kept coming up short. Most sweaters were fitted and going up a size just made it seem like I bought the wrong size. I even considered a men’s sweater, but didn’t like the cut. It was always one of those items that I kept wishing I had in my wardrobe every autumn and winter. I was very optimistic when I saw the Madewell one on their site this year and ordered it during a recent sale. It’s perfect! While I normally hate drop-shoulders, it works here as an intentionally oversized piece. As far as cashmere goes, it’s on the thinner side and I can’t speak to how it’ll wear over time, but it drapes wonderfully and I’m just so delighted with it. I’m planning to buy a second one if it goes on sale again to have as a backup. After waiting so long to find The One, I’d hate for something to happen to it!
  • Tory Burch small ‘Kira’ quilt shoulder bag – Make no mistake that this was a splurge for me, but I could not stop thinking about that perfect brown hue on a supple leather bag. Tory Burch had their fall sale earlier this month, which brought the price down by 30%. Even then, it was still a bit of an investment and I dipped into my “Splurge Savings” to cover the costs. It’s a beautiful addition to my wardrobe and it fits all of the daytime essentials easily. The chain strap allows the purse to be worn as a crossbody bag or doubled up and worn over the shoulder. It feels so grown up and ladylike!
  • Amazon gold-plated hoop earrings – Grace posted about these recently and I thought they’d be a smart option to pack for our trip to Switzerland — if I lost them, no biggie! Since they’re small, they’re convincing enough to pass for fine jewelry.

HOUSEHOLD

  • Let’s Eat by Dan Pelosi – Dan’s recipes haven’t lead me astray yet, especially this pasta salad! While I haven’t made anything new in this book yet, I’m very much looking forward to digging in. The photos are beautiful and Dan’s anecdotes peppered throughout are charming.

Start Your Thanksgiving Prep in October for a Stress-Free and Memorable Celebration

October 11, 2023 by jessica Leave a Comment

Once autumn color begins to dot the landscape and the air holds a chill, it’s a sign that holiday season is fast approaching — and that includes every host and hostess’ version of “the big game:” Thanksgiving.

While it may seem early to start planning for the holiday, I firmly believe that October is the perfect time to kick off your Thanksgiving preparations. In this guide, I’ll delve into why early October planning is the key to a stress-free and memorable Thanksgiving celebration.

1. Beat the Holiday Rush

One of the most compelling reasons to start Thanksgiving planning in October is to get a jump on the holiday rush. As November approaches, stores become crowded and ingredients and decorations limited. (There’s a reason we’re all buying the best decorative gourds in the summer!) By starting early, you can avoid the eleventh-hour chaos and procure many of the items you’ll want for your Thanksgiving experience. This obviously includes decorations, a good roasting pan, and tableware (this modern gravy boat is fantastic), but it also encompasses shelf-stable or freezable groceries. It’s the perfect time to get your dried spices, nonperishables like that can of cranberries that everyone seems to like, wine, and — yes — even the turkey. You can either pre-order a turkey from a local butcher, or buy a frozen bird to tuck away in your own freezer.

2. Secure Your Guest List

Send out those invitations! Early planning allows you to finalize your guest list well in advance — and make sure someone else doesn’t make plans to compete with your own carefully planned celebration! Plus, if you have any out-of-towners, they can make travel arrangements early.

3. Menu Perfection

Crafting a Thanksgiving menu that caters to diverse tastes and dietary preferences can be time-intensive. By starting to prep in October, you have the luxury of time to plan meticulously, experiment with new recipes, refine your menu, and nail down timing. If you’re going to do a potluck, early planning allows your guests share what they’re bringing well in advance, giving you time to fill in the gaps.

4. Decorate with Care

It feels like the best seasonal decor is sold out well before the holiday rolls around. While I know that retailers don’t want that stock to sit around for post-event sales, it’s discouraging to simply wait until the month of a holiday to already find shelves bare. Personally, I don’t think you need a lot in terms of Thanksgiving decorations. It’s really just time to let the most beloved pieces of your collection take center stage. Think taper candles set in beautiful holders, a simple tablecloth (love this affordable linen-blend option), refined glassware, and your favorite serving pieces — bonus points if you have any heirloom pieces to use.

Find some of my favorite pieces for your table setting here.

5. Manage Your Budget

Let’s face it, Thanksgiving celebrations are expensive! Spreading your budget out across several weeks will feel a lot more manageable instead of having one sky-high grocery bill the week before the holiday. And, you have time to look for any early sales on food or wine you can store in you pantry until Thanksgiving.

6. Reduce Stress and Savor the Season

Arguably, the most substantial benefit of early Thanksgiving planning is stress reduction. Nothing kills that holiday mood quicker than standing in long grocery store lines. By tending to preparations well in advance, you can actually enjoy the holiday season without the burden of last-minute tasks and errands.

So, there you have it. My plea to begin your prep early and make this Thanksgiving your most memorable — and stress-free — one yet!

On the Right Foot: Thanksgiving Desserts to Make Early, Fall Foliage in California, Why American Front Lawns Look the Same, & More!

October 9, 2023 by jessica Leave a Comment

I made this Bundt cake yesterday. It’s a riff on a glazed old fashioned donut. Bake on the lower end of the time range. Mine was done at the 40-minute mark.

After spending $13 on cardamom for the aforementioned cake, I looked up why it’s such an expensive spice.

Tory Burch’s fall event runs through the end of the day tomorrow. I used it as an excuse to dip into my “splurge” savings and add this bag to my collection.

It’s by design that most American front yards look the same.

The holiday season is fast approaching and while I know it feels early to be talking about Thanksgiving, here are some of my picks for entertaining essentials if you’d like to get a jump on planning.

Molly Baz’s new cookbook comes out tomorrow! I enjoyed reading this interview with her.

A reminder to try to be mindful of fast-fashion consumption. We’re all guilty of it, so let’s make sure the purchases we do make have some longevity and aren’t trend-inspired.

Admittedly, I’ve never considered California for a fall foliage getaway.

25 Thanksgiving desserts to make ahead and freeze.

I just bought this sweater in gray and I love it so much.

Enjoy your week!

I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
