On the Right Foot: Shoe Theft, Swedish Death Cleaning, A Cheerful Striped Sweater & More!

September 11, 2023 by jessica Leave a Comment

image credit: Jason Leem

Did you see this absolutely bonkers story of a woman’s Tinder date stealing her Maison Margiela Tabi’s?!

A few Etsy favorites.

A brief history of popcorn ceilings.

Swedish Death Cleaning: a thoughtful concept, despite the morbid name.

Second-hand shopping mistakes.

Some of my recent Amazon purchases include: a poncho to pack for Switzerland that doesn’t take up a lot of space in a backpack in case we have a rainy hike, a pair designer-dupe earrings, and a tissue box cover that fits over a Costco-size box of Kleenex.

I typically shy away from anything that involves deep-frying at home, but I might give it a whirl for these apple fritters.

Do you remember this plotline from The Babysitters Club movie?

This striped sweater has such a cheerful color combination!

I love a good cookbook. Here are some of the best new releases this fall.

Enjoy the week!

8 Home Decor Finds on Etsy

September 8, 2023 by jessica Leave a Comment

I miss the early days of Etsy when it was a platform for artists rather than mass produced items masquerading as handmade. However, with a little bit of digging, there are beautiful pieces to discover. Here few that recently caught my eye:

  • A pair of stoneware mugs;
  • Trays made from agricultural byproducts;
  • A walnut magazine rack;
  • This beautiful plug-in sconce;
  • A chic firewood holder;
  • A charming print of a pair of sardines;
  • Brass shelf brackets; and
  • A trio of wooden candlestick holders.

On the Right Foot: A Highly Anticipated Cookbook, Charming European Cities for Day Trips, Peak Fall Foliage & More

September 4, 2023 by jessica Leave a Comment

Happy Labor Day! I hope you’re enjoying some well-deserved R&R!

We’re making progress in our bedroom (above) and have new lamps on the way! We had been using a pair of inexpensive Target lamps since we moved in six years ago. They were great for what we needed at the time, but it was time to upgrade to a nicer set. (Bedroom sources: bed, pillow case, quilt, night stand, white vase, similar faux maple leaves.)

Secretary Buttigieg has put pressure on airlines to strengthen their customer service commitments. Bookmark this dashboard to reference if you have a flight delay. It outlines what airlines will offer.

A few fall items to add to your wish list. (The earrings are on mine and that monogrammable bag is so good!)

Indiana will have a beer festival inside of a corn maze.

Dan Pelosi’s cookbook is released this week!

European cities worth a day trip. I’ve been to three of them (Salzburg, Ghent, and Bruges) and can absolutely vouch for their charm. We might have to add Lausanne to the itinerary for this year’s trip to Switzerland.

Things I bought and loved last month.

Use this interactive fall foliage map to find when peak color will happen in your area.

I’m not much of a movie person, but I am looking forward to this rom-com starring Meg Ryan.

Interior designers share what items you don’t need to splurge on.

Things I Bought & Loved in August

August 31, 2023 by jessica Leave a Comment

WARDROBE
See this year’s sartorial additions here.

  • Barbour stretch ‘Cavalry’ quilted jacket – We’re going to Switzerland this October and I wanted a waist-length puffer jacket that would keep me cozy on our Alpine days but could easily be packed away in a backpack if the weather warms up. Not only did this Barbour jacket check of my must-haves, it’s also extremely flattering for a puffer with the knit paneling on the sides to give it shape and the chevron quilting. I also love that it has a double zipper and snaps on the back to allow for some give around the hips if needed. Go up a size if you think you’ll be wearing it with thicker sweaters. My regular size was great with a long-sleeve t-shirt, but got too snug when I put something more substantial underneath.
  • Warby Parker ‘Augusta’ sunglasses – I can’t walk into Warby Parker and leave without a pair of sunglasses. What I loved about the frame isn’t just flat across the front. Instead, the frame is concaved between the edges of the frame and the lenses. It’s a fun refresh for my sunglasses collection, especially since I’m never going to get on board with the tiny sunglasses trend.
  • H&M rib-knit sweater with collar – I’m going to wear this all fall with jeans. It’s cozy, but still pulled together enough to wear to work. I went down a size.
  • Madewell ‘Lucie’ floral print dress – I’m on the fence about this dress, even though I’ve kept it. We bike a lot with our friends to go out for happy hours or dinner and I don’t always love wearing shorts to do so — I’m not graceful enough to bike without shorts under a dress. I’ve been adding a few dresses to my wardrobe that are dark enough that I can wear bike shorts underneath that stay concealed. This dress seems a bit twee for my style, but it’s pretty cute paired with strappy sandals, a woven bag, and ’70s-inspired sunglasses. I went up a size for length since the smocked top fit similarly in my regular size.
  • Target crewneck cashmere-like pullover sweater – This is such a hit from Target! It’s so soft that it has me eager for sweater weather. I went up a size because it’s cropped and I preferred the extra length to half-tuck into my waistband.
  • J.Crew seaside short – I have these in black and wear them all the time, so I added navy to the mix this summer.

HOUSEHOLD

  • Target woven pumpkin – Target does such a great job with its annual pumpkin lineup. Mine was actually from the “Dollar Spot” for $3 and is slightly different. I have this one from last year, though, and I love that it’s autumnal without being garish.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
