The Weekend Guide

The Weekend Guide 07.01.16

COO
Farm animals wearing expensive jewelry is one of my favorite things of the week. (Most of their gems cost more than what’s in my jewelry box!)

SPEND
We all know that spending time outdoors is good for you, but it could be better than we ever thought possible with a measurable reduction in stress, higher levels of creativity, and spiritual and emotional benefits. Just 10 to 15 minutes a day is enough to start reaping the benefits.

LEARN
Honeymoon history is as surprising as the word’s etymology. (On a related note, how cute is that photo from Danielle’s wedding? Her vintage dress is gorgeous, too.)

SNAP
Fourth of July weekend means an influx of firework Instagrams. Make yours the best of the bunch with these tips.

MEET
You know how much I love learning more about jewelry designers. New-to-me designer Ina Beissner has caught my attention with this interview. Browse her collection here.

BRING
Potlucks and cookouts are usually code for unhealthy meals, but that doesn’t have to be the case. Here are two recipes to try next time you’re asked to bring a dish to pass.

Finally ponied up for a Tory Burch Fitbit bracelet, now on super sale.
I also ordered a skort for cycling, since I’m just not on board with shorts.

Budget Update: June 2016

June 29, 2016 by jessica 8 Comments

Jenny Bird Large Edie Hoops

I was all about the budget buys this month with each item coming in under $100. This led to a sartorially scatterbrained month with items ranging from a tropical off-the-shoulder number I haven’t yet worn to an ultra-girly dress that’s not totally my style to a faux fur scarf I can’t wait to wear this winter to a preppy button-down shirt I’ve donned at least a dozen times already. It’s amazing to see how quickly those little purchases added up, though! I came in at $250, which is right on the money if my quarter budget was divided evenly over the three-month span.

I don’t have any holes in my wardrobe I’m looking to fill next month. I do have this bag on its way to me (a steal with the extra 50% off, reward coupons, and a birthday discount code that brought the price down to a whopping $27). I’m also eager to try a few things from Ann Taylor, specifically this pair of heels, this top, and this skirt. I might finally add a Tory Burch Fitbit bracelet to my accessories collection now that this leather-wrap bracelet is on sale for $68.

BUDGET*
Summer Budget (June – August): $750
Spent in June: $250
Added: $0
Amount Remaining: $500

Winter Budget Recap: December, January, February
Spring Budget Recap: March, April, May

*I don’t add money for tax and shipping into my budget, nor do I add athletic clothing or sleepwear. Most of the money I earn from the blogging goes into my general savings account or is earmarked for travel, but I’ll move some to the clothing budget when needed.

Wardrobe-Update-June-2016

PURCHASED
See all of the year’s wardrobe additions here.

  • H&M floral off-the-shoulder blouse ($25; not pictured): I adore this, but I actually haven’t worn it yet because the top is awfully sheer. I need some sort of tube top to wear underneath. Any ideas?
  • J.Crew Factory linen-cotton blend shirt ($35; worn here): The linen-cotton blend of this shirt makes it a comfortable, no-fuss option for breezy summer days. It runs true to size.
  • J.Crew Collection faux-fur striped scarf ($36): I’m so happy I patiently waited for this! I adored it last winter and almost pulled the trigger many times, but I didn’t want to spend $165 on it and it was often excluded from discounts. As much as I don’t like winter, at least wearing this scarf is something to look forward to!
  • Zara flounce sleeve dress in blue ($70; worn here): In retrospect, I probably shouldn’t have kept this. On one hand, the lace is pretty, I love the color, and I’m all about the waist-nipping seams lately. On the other hand, I’m really struggling on how to style it. It’s such a girly dress that I don’t want to wear it with ultra feminine accessories because that’s just not my style. It’s also too large. Zara’s sizing is always so hard for me to figure out. I ordered both the medium and the large. The smaller size was a half inch too small around the waist. On the large dress, I can gather at least an inch and a half of fabric in the back. Eventually I’ll take it to the tailor.
  • RACHEL Rachel Roy frond-print dress ($34): I stayed home sick for a day a couple of weeks ago and used it as an opportunity to catch up on magazines. I spotted this frond-print dress in InStyle (I think?) and immediately placed an order for it. I love the graphic black and cream print and the flattering cut. The fabric is stretchy. If you’re between sizes, you can probably get away with the smaller of the two. (I see that it’s now on sale for $42 with an additional 20% off with code FOURTH. Macy’s honored a price adjustment for me, which brought the price down from the $59 I previously paid.)
  • Who What Wear x Target apron slip dress ($33; worn here): This was an impulsive purchase when I went to Target in search of cycling clothing. The fabric is lovely and feels like it should cost way more than it does. The box pleats hang straight down so it doesn’t add too much extra bulk too your figure.
  • Merona black knot belt ($17; worn here): I purchased this belt the same day I purchased the slip dress from Target. I love the design. It’s been great for belting loose casual dresses this summer. I also love how it matches the bag I have en route to me.
  • Jenny Bird large “Edie” hoop earrings (birthday gift): These were from Dave for my birthday! Aren’t they fabulous?

DIDN’T WORK OUT
Things I tried and didn’t love:

  • dRA “Henriette” dress ($92): Oof, this thing was dumpy on me. The bust was tight (and I don’t have much to fill it out to begin with), the baby-doll waist was too high, and the extra fabric around the waist made me look pregnant. Now, let’s pretend the fit was great. Would I have kept it then? Nope. The quality was pretty bad for $92.
  • ASOS floral skater dress with contrast tipping ($62): I thought the background of this dress would be more of a pink hue, but it was a weird tan color instead. That said, the cut of this dress is incredibly flattering. It’s made of a stretchy knit fabric, so you could go down a size.
  • Betsey Johnson lace trim cotton tunic dress ($148): This looks like a nightgown or, as Dave pointed out, a grandmother’s tea cozy. Don’t do it.
  • Zara guipure lace dress in white ($70): The lace on this dress is gorgeous! The waist seam and halter-cut top are both flattering. The only drawback is that the lining of the skirt is incredibly tight on me. I didn’t love it enough to take it to the tailor to see if they could add triangle insets to the sides of the lining so that it didn’t keep riding up. It’s definitely worth checking out if you’re placing an order or swinging by a Zara store, though.

Cult Gaia Ark Bag

June 27, 2016 by jessica 12 Comments

cult gaia ark bag

Happy Monday! We had a fun-filled weekend, which is making it especially hard to get back into the swing of things this week. We watched pro golfers at the American Family Championship (a PGA seniors event), went on a 20-mile bike ride (which may have been too much for my second time out this year!), spent a few hours in the pool, enjoyed a doner kebab sausage (a convincing substitute for the real thing, which is impossible to find here) at Madison’s O.S.S., and finally brought this bag on its maiden voyage.

I bought the tote a few months ago, before its popularity led to a sharp price increase. (The large size was $48 last year, I bought it at $58, and now it rings in at $98!). The rising price doesn’t seem to deter fashionistas, given that there’s a wait list to purchase the piece. The bag is a replica of a vintage Japanese picnic basket and I’ve actually come across a few on Etsy. They’re now sold out, but it’s worth keeping an eye on if $98 seems like too much to spend on a wooden, slightly impractical bag. The slats are close enough together where most things won’t fall out, but I still corralled my necessities in a cosmetic case.

The Weekend Guide 06.24.16

SIP
I’m a huge fan of gin-based cocktails. I can’t wait to mix up these rhubarb, fennel, and vermouth drinks this weekend.

WATCH
Sarah Jessica Parker is returning to HBO. She’s leaving Carrie Bradshaw — and her quest for marriage — behind with her new show Divorce.

LAUNCH
Have a heartbreakingly adorable pet? Read on for insider info on the world of Instagram-famous pets and their endorsement deals.

GOSSIP
The Devil Wears Prada is still one of my favorite movies, even though it came out 10 years ago. (Can you believe it’s been that long?!) Here are 17 little-known facts about the movie and its production.

KNOW
The UK voted to make its Brexit from the EU yesterday. It’s a long process, expected to take two years for the conscious uncoupling to occur. Here’s a guide for what this means for Americans. I try to stay away from controversial topics — and my opinions on them — on my blog, but this was a terrible decision fueled by racist, anti-immigration talking points (oh, wait, it’s called “nationalism”). Americans can’t even be too judgmental about it, given that Trump is the presumptive Republican nominee and we’re well on our way to alienating ourselves, too.

SURVIVE
Being an Airbnb host doesn’t seem easy — and it’s even harder to be reviewed harshly for things beyond your control. Just reading this essay has made me more conscientious about overnight stays.

NOTABLE SALES
An extra 30% off sale items at Tory Burch with code EXTRA30. (Tempted by these.)
An extra 25% off sale items at Shopbop through Friday with code 25EXTRA. (Debating this.)
An extra 30% sale items through July 5 at Kate Spade with code SUNSHINE. (Stock up on wine totes for the holidays, and this little red crossbody is perfect.)

EARLIER THIS WEEK
Picked up a budget-friendly black maxi from Target.
Wore a little blue dress.
Daydreamed about what I’m going to wear for the July 4th festivities.
Decided to head to Nashville in October. (I’m already pinning ideas! Let me know of any must-dos!)
Purchased tickets to see Hamilton in Chicago this March. (So excited!)

It also inadvertently became the weekend I made Dave eat a cheeseburger every day, between @redhotranchchicago, @eatmottst, and @smallcheval. There are worst ways to spend a weekend.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.
