Review :: Try the World Paris Box

February 18, 2015 by jessica 11 Comments

TryTheWorld2

A few weeks ago, I mentioned that I signed up for Try the World, a subscription box with gourmet goodies from different cities around the globe. In full disclosure, I think subscriptions boxes are kind of stupid. I also hate grab bags. I like knowing what my money is buying and I suspect many of you are the same way. I was intrigued by Try the World because they give you a sneak peek of what’s inside your box before you commit. (Be aware, however, that Try the World works with small producers and each box may vary slightly due to product availability.) I like traveling and I like food, so I forked over $39 for my one-time box of treats from Paris. Oh la la!

TryTheWorld5

So, what does $39 get you? Not much and not the fleur de sel the stock image boasted (read: the item I was most excited about), but I do like the unique mix of products I probably wouldn’t have purchased otherwise. (Dave joked that Try the World is for people who are too lazy to go to World Market.) Here’s what was inside and the approximate values taking into account the net weight of the items compared to full-size products:

  • La Mere Poulard sables: $3.50
  • Maison D’Armorine salted butter caramels: $5
  • Domaine des Vignes whole grain mustard: $4
  • Charles Antona fig jam: $3.50
  • Clement Faugier chestnut spread: $4
  • Flagrants Desirs dark chocolate bar: $4
  • Francois Doucet fruit jellies: $2
  • A card explaining each product
  • A culture guide

That’s $26 worth of product for $39. I had signed up during a promotion, so my Paris box came along with a second box of treats from various countries. That’s the only reason I’m not too irked about this. I would have been much happier with a total value of $33-35. I realize that some of the money needs to go to packaging costs and overhead, but I don’t think it’s expecting too much for the value to be closer to the amount paid. Will I try it again? Maybe if there’s an Amsterdam or Brussels box and I’m feeling nostalgic. It’s such a fun idea and I’m disappointed that this wasn’t a slam dunk. I would have been happy to sign up for a full year if the value was there.

Get the Look

February 17, 2015 by jessica 13 Comments

GetTheLook5

Every now and then, I come across a pin so good that I can’t wait to replicate the outfit. This is one of those times. The outfit is effortless, timeless, and really easy to recreate. A white dress with a relaxed silhouette and lacy details anchors the look. (Unfortunately, the English Factory dress featured here is sold out. Keep this link bookmarked in case a return pops back. This dress has a similar vibe.) Top it off with delicate gold jewelry, simple sandals, and a pair of classic Clubmaster sunglasses. A crossbody saddle bag keeps your essentials at hand. (I know it’s a total Chloe knockoff, but it’s only $50.) A vibrant manicure adds just the right amount of color.

Ever since I purchased this bag for spring, I’ve been obsessed with adding more white to my wardrobe in preparation for the warmer months ahead. In fact, the English Factory dress featured here is already on its way to me along with this Rebecca Minkoff bag (white with the gold hardware). It’s a welcome refresh after this dreary winter.

Bauble of the Week

To say I’m obsessed with Lulu Frost’s latest collection would be a bit of an understatement. Each of the Egyptian-inspired tassel pieces are irresistible, but the Eternal Life Tassel Necklace is undoubtedly my favorite of the bunch. The lapis scarab slides up and down the chain to customize the look for your outfit.

Weekend Guide

ENVY
One man earned major points this Valentine’s Day when he commissioned an artist to paint his girlfriend into iconic Disney scenes.

[spacer]

LEARN
A historic candy called a cockle inspired the ubiquitous Valentine’s sweet. (If you’re crafty, you can make these leggings.)

[spacer]

WATCH
Here are five British shows to add to your queue. I’ve already watched Luther starring Idris Elba. I’d like to start The Fall next.

[spacer]

KNOW
By now you’ve probably heard that Pinterest is stripping away affiliate links. Personally, I’m excited to see bloggers put more effort into wish list boards with pinnable collages rather than stock images of individual pieces.

[spacer]

AWW
Australia’s oldest gentleman knits sweaters for penguins affected by oil spills. Basically, it’s the cutest thing you’ll see all month.

[spacer]

WEAR
Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse to wear all the pink things! I’ve been on the lookout for an ultra girly pink bag and I love this one from Rebecca Minkoff.

FITNESS UPDATE
Ugh, I’m so discouraged because I gained back the .4 pounds I lost last week. I know it’s silly of me to be this obsessed with the scale because my measurements are showing huge changes. This week, I lost another half inch from my hips and from my waist. I know that the measurements are what count the most and indicate that I’m probably building lean muscle, but I’d really like to see my efforts reflected on the scale.

IN OTHER NEWS
The sandals I posted the other day are all kinds of adorable. I also ordered the white English Rose dress I posted here. I’m not sure of the sizing, so here’s hoping the medium fits! Finally, there’s an extra 25% off sale items at Tory Burch this weekend with code SALE25.

It also inadvertently became the weekend I made Dave eat a cheeseburger every day, between @redhotranchchicago, @eatmottst, and @smallcheval. There are worst ways to spend a weekend.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.
