Life Update & This Week’s “On the Right Foot” Link Roundup

October 24, 2022 by jessica 2 Comments

Hey, friends, so I didn’t anticipate being away from the blog for over a month, but a lot has happened since I last checked in here. The most gut-wrenching was that our cat, Oliver, passed away. Without getting into the details, it was completely unexpected. He went from being himself to being whisked to the emergency vet in a matter of hours. It turns out that he was FIV-positive, which is a lot like HIV in humans where his immune system was weakened and he was unable to fight off an otherwise treatable infection. We were blindsided by the news and are deeply mourning the loss of our furry best friend. I had the image above printed and framed at Framebridge. We did one for our previous cat, Bacon, too and it helped me grieve the loss — and eventually made me smile when I looked at it.

Our loss, unfortunately, overshadowed the post-vacation excitement from our recent trip to Europe. We visited Munich for Oktoberfest (and met up with friends there); then went to Salzburg, Austria; and finished the trip in Amsterdam. I have a lot of photos to share, which I’ll get to when I’m feeling like I’m in a better headspace. Getting back into a routine is helping me cope, so I thought I’d kick things off with a Monday link roundup:

How marigolds became integral to Mexico’s Day of the Dead and India’s Diwali.

I just love this kitchen renovation/relocation.

This is a gorgeous use of tile.

We just finished The Watcher on Netflix, which most already know is inspired by a true story, but there’s another true crime that’s woven into the show.

Malachite earrings.

The holiday season is made for charcuterie boards. Here’s how to assemble a good one.

This is my new favorite sweater. I’ve already purchased it in gray and beige. It’s so soft and fits true to size.

Your posture matters when you take pills.

Tips for shopping final sales.

On the Right Foot: A Must-Watch Documentary, Reflecting on the Queen’s Reign, Statement Necklaces Return & More!

Recent snapshots (clockwise from upper left): I bought a new coat, and Oliver got a new box to lounge in; Saturday morning pastries from Batch Bakehouse; a stroll through the botanical gardens; it’s beginning to look like autumn at home.

I enjoyed reading this reflection on Queen Elizabeth II’s reign.

Attention Wisconsinites: here’s a list of the best restaurants to visit in the southern part of the state. (I can vouch for all of the Madison recommendations.)

There’s a new Girl Scout cookie in next year’s lineup.

Crushing on these chunky, wear-with-everything earrings.

Get your decorative gourds ready for the season!

Daxxify, a competitor to Botox, was just approved by the FDA and claims to last for six months (twice the average length of Botox).

If you haven’t already watched Netflix’s Trainwreck about Woodstock ’99, add it to the queue immediately.

I love how this home brings in the serenity of its waterside location.

What I bought and loved last month.

Statement necklaces are back!

Things I Bought & Loved Last Month

September 8, 2022 by jessica 0 Comments

It feels like summer was gone in a blink of an eye this year — and beyond that, how are we almost a third of the way through September?! I’m usually good about sharing some of my favorite purchases of the month when they’re timely enough to purchase, but that’s not the case this time around with two Boden sale picks. (I’ve really become a fan of Boden this year. Their pieces are beautiful, well made, and timeless.) Regardless, read on to learn more about what made its way to my closet this year.

Not mentioned below: the dirndl I purchased for Munich’s Oktoberfest later this month. Prost!

WARDROBE
See this year’s sartorial additions here.

  • Birkenstock ‘Madrid’ sandals in white – I have these in black and the big buckle version in cognac. The white was a natural addition to my collection. I’d been waiting for them to be restocked for the better part of the summer.
  • Boden ankle tile pointed flats in tan – I’m sorry to share that these are sold out because they’re gorgeous and a unique alternative to a standard pair of ballet flats. They’re perfect for the summer-to-fall transition. I usually wear a size 7 in American sizing, but went with a 38 in these (the 7.5 equivalent). They fit perfectly. I also have my eye on this pair.
  • Boden cashmere sweater in tan – This sweater is wonderfully plush with a slightly oversize fit that manages to remain flattering. I can already tell that I’ll be reaching for this on repeat once it gets cooler out.
  • H&M rib-knit cardigan in beige melange – H&M is always hit or miss for me (and more often a miss), but I was intrigued by this cardigan that’s getting a lot of love online. It runs excessively large. I bought a small, which is more than generous. I don’t find the fit particularly flattering, especially with the wide-cut arms that only look good slightly rolled. However, it’s very cozy. I’m keeping it to wear with black yoga pants and this black tank top on our flight to Europe. It’ll also be wonderful for work-from-home days.
  • J.Crew demi-boot cropped jeans – I love a cropped jean! With cooler days on the horizon, I thought I should at least have more than one pair of jeans.
  • J.Crew seaside linen-blend shorts in black – I have the older version of these in olive, but this year’s version is so much better. They managed to improve the cut to make it more flattering and the material doesn’t get as baggy as the previous iteration did. It’s definitely worth snagging a pair.

HOUSEHOLD

  • Target linen-blend cloth napkins – These are just $10 for a set of four! The color is a beautiful, rich pumpkin brown that’s perfect for autumn table settings. Don’t sleep on these.

12 of the Best Decorative Pumpkins for Autumn

August 24, 2022 by jessica 0 Comments

ONE | TWO | THREE | FOUR | FIVE | SIX | SEVEN | EIGHT | NINE | TEN | ELEVEN | TWELVE

I know it’s early for autumnal content and I promise not to go full bore into it just yet. However, I’ve been getting a lot of fall promotions recently and if past experience is any indication, the best decorative pumpkins get swept up quickly once those emails start rolling out. My suggestion is to shop your favorites now and tuck them away until mid-September. I have No. 2 from last year, which is a steal at just $5. This year, I have my eye on No. 1. (You won’t see any jack-o-lanterns in this roundup, though, as I prefer to spend my money on pieces that are versatile enough to keep on display through Thanksgiving.)

Upcoming changes for our bedroom.

I made this blueberry crumb pie yesterday and it’s so good! However, I’m going to add two tablespoons of cornstarch to the filling next time. It’s awfully runny.

The dull HGTV-ification of American homes.

The latest home account to catch my eye.

I purchased this pair of ankle-tie flats in the brown woven leather. They’re beautiful!

This top-handle bucket bag is a stunning splurge.

Have a wonderful week!

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
