12 Home Decor Ideas for a Springtime Refresh

March 18, 2021 by jessica Leave a Comment

Spring 2021 Home Refresh

We had another round of snow earlier this week, coming right after a string of 50-degree days that melted everything that was on the ground previously. Hopefully it was the last winter blast before spring because I am so ready for warmer weather after being cooped up during a pandemic winter (and, you know, the rest of the year). Since it’s not quite warm enough to spend much time outdoors, I’m setting my sights on making the indoors spring-ready with lighter colors and plenty of fresh green hues. I’ve already picked up a pair of those striped pillows, which are a steal at $20 each for a zippered pillow and insert. I also recently placed an order for a new lamp! I almost went for that green one above, but decided to go with a different statement-maker instead. I can’t wait for it to arrive next month!

  1. Striped Pillow, $20
  2. Outdoor Dining Chair, $129
  3. Platter, $98
  4. Acrylic Drinkware, $5.50 – $88
  5. Mini Serving Bowl Set, $52
  6. Sateen Sheet Set, $58 – $228
  7. Four-Piece Place Setting, $43.80
  8. Mushroom-Shaped Lamp, $299
  9. Throw Pillow, $47.95
  10. Basketweave Throw Blanket, $135
  11. Striped Runner, $115
  12. Planter, $37

Great Gadget: Candle Shaver

March 11, 2021 by jessica Leave a Comment

As I shared with you last week (along with a roundup of taper holders I love), I’m a huge fan of candlesticks. However, not all candlesticks fit nicely into a taper holder. For the holders with openings that are too large, there’s an adhesive for candles so they don’t wobble. When the opposite is true: there’s the candle shaver. It acts just like a pencil sharpener, whittling down the end until it fits nicely into the opening.

Honestly, I didn’t know this gadget existed until earlier this year when I was struggling to fit a candle into my new — and extremely delicate — holder from CB2. Scraping down the sides of the candle with a knife was working, but it wasn’t as efficient as I’d like. Then, I remembered an offhand comment in Jenna Lyon’s recent show about a candle shaver and took to the internet to buy one of my own. There are plastic versions (here and here), but I opted for a metal one I bought directly from the manufacturer for just $8.20 after shipping. It is well worth it to avoid forcing a candle into a holder and risking breakage — of either the holder or the candle itself.

On the Right Foot: #FilterDrop, The Spring Bag I Love, Cooperative Overlapping & More!

The anticipated Simone Rocha x H&M collection launches this week on March 11.

Two indoor/outdoor pillows I’m loving for warm weather: this striped lumbar and this jute-inspired option.

Make-up artist and model, Sasha Pallari, has spearheaded a campaign called #FilterDrop to expose the unrealistic expectations of beauty that filters create — especially when it’s used on an Instagrammer’s skincare or makeup post.

I adore this canvas bag for spring.

Late-stage pandemic is messing with your brain.

Watching Jersey Shore: Family Vacation has been one of my guilty pleasures, so I especially loved this piece.

Shopping Guide: Candlestick Holders

March 3, 2021 by jessica Leave a Comment

I don’t know what it is about candlestick holders, but I can’t resist new sets whenever I find them traveling or at an antique store. They’re practical and they don’t take up a lot of space, which probably fuels the obsession! And that doesn’t begin to cover the mood-setting capabilities of a candlestick or the décor opportunities of candlesticks in pretty colorways like those above. (Since those candles are on the pricier side, use it as inspiration for mixing and matching less expensive tapers like this, this, and this.)

Here are nine candlestick holders I love:

  1. Asha Taper Holder, $29.95*
  2. Jadeite Glass Candlestick Holders, $72/set of 2
  3. Roundable Taper Candle Holder Set, $39.95*
  4. Simple Candle Holder in Brass, $76/set of 2*
  5. Duo Candlestick Holder, $58
  6. Lorin Taper Holders, $12.95 – $19.95
  7. Stoneware Taper Candle Holder, $35
  8. Elko Small Ceramic Taper Candle Holder, $18.95
  9. Modern Brass Metal Candleholders, $30 – $180

*I have each of these! No. 4 is probably my favorite of the bunch. They’re substantial and elegant, and the price isn’t too bad for the quality. I also adore No. 1, but that one is very fragile. It’s almost better off as a sculptural piece.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
