Things I Bought & Loved in March

March 30, 2023 by jessica Leave a Comment

I channeled some of that January shopping restraint this month and refreshed my closet and home with just a couple of new additions.

WARDROBE
See this year’s sartorial additions here.

  • RIXO ‘Lorena’ Dress – With a mandarin collar, Missoni vibes, and a body-skimming silhouette, this dress is different than what I typically reach for. That’s what makes it so much fun! I wore it with black tights and these Mary Jane flats at an event recently. I went up a size so it wasn’t hugging too tightly. I was a bit concerned that the knit fabric would snag, but it held up.

HOUSEHOLD

  • West Elm linen pillow covers – I already have these in olive and they’re beautiful, but I wanted a lighter color for spring and summer and ordered a set in “natural.” I especially love the contrast edge. The pillow covers are 20″ square, but I use these 22″ inserts with them.

Things I Bought & Loved Last Month

March 1, 2023 by jessica Leave a Comment

Goodness, I may have been too busy to blog and make an appearance on social media last month, but I certainly made time to shop. I thought I’d continue into 2023 as picky and streamlined about my purchases as I was in January — and it was true for the most part with items that I’m enamored with — but I was definitely less conservative about adding things to my cart.

As I alluded to in this post, we’re also making strides in giving our bedroom a bit of a facelift. I’m not adding those purchases in these roundups and will plan to do a full post once I share photos of the room.

WARDROBE
See this year’s sartorial additions here.

  • J.Crew cotton voile cover-up – I’m not surprised this striped cover-up is almost sold out. It’s incredibly cute and those green stripes give it vintage Beverly Hills Hotel vibes. I went with a size up for extra room around my hips.
  • J.Crew metallic ball earrings – These eye-catching earrings are versatile and lightweight. They’ll definitely be a staple this spring.
  • Nike ‘Pegasus’ trail running shoes – We’re going to Denver for a long weekend later this month and are hoping to for nice weather that will allow for a bit of hiking. I felt like my regular Nike sneakers don’t offer enough traction on trails, so I ordered a more practical pair for hikes this year. I went with my regular size.
  • Boden tiered dress – Our niece is getting baptized this month and while I’ll be sitting a pew for the duration of it, I still wanted a new day dress with church-appropriate sleeves. (I’m not religious in the slightest and this is the first baptism I’ve been invited to. Let me know if I’m off base with this dress.) I thought this one was just so cheerful with that pretty shade of yellow, and it looks cute with ballet flats as well as sneakers. I can see myself wearing it quite a bit this spring. It ran true to size for the most part — perhaps a little generous, but it’s on sale and a size smaller wasn’t available to try.
  • Kate Spade cocktail ring – It’s been awhile since I’ve fallen this hard for a cocktail ring that I just had to have! It’s absolutely stunning in person and I love the variegated sizes of the rhinestones and faux pearls. (I keep a “Splurge” savings account open where I put around $25 per paycheck, so I can pull cash out of that fund whenever something I can’t otherwise justify sweeps me away.)

HOUSEHOLD

  • Vego raised garden beds in ‘pearl white’ – I’ve toyed with the idea of raised garden beds for a couple of years now and finally took the plunge with a couple of these 2′ x 5′ beds. I had a lot of success with tomatoes and habaneros last year, and I’m eager to expand my little garden this spring!
  • Art print by Jess Franks – This print reminds of me vintage paint-by-numbers and I just love the color combination the artist used. I bought this for our half bath, meaning it’s finally time to take and post reveal photos — just a year late!
  • Target faux shagreen box – I have a difficult time staying focused when my workspace is messy and this impulse buy was just the thing to corral miscellaneous clutter on my desk at home.

Things I Bought & Loved This Month – Plus $20 to East Fork Pottery

January 25, 2023 by jessica Leave a Comment

I’m kicking off the year staying true to the “fewer better things” mantra with just a handful of purchases that earned their spot in our home. I’m enamored with each of these, but especially the mugs. I look forward to using them every morning for our mid-morning latte break! We bought this Breville espresso machine during the pandemic. It was well worth the investment and makes working from home a lot more enjoyable.

If you’ve had an East Fork pottery piece on your wish list, you can use this link to receive $20 off your first purchase. There’s no minimum purchase for the $20 discount. (And, nope, I don’t receive a commission or anything on this. It’s a fun program they have to spread the love for their ceramics!)

  • H&M pleated dress (worn here) – This is such a fun dress and looks a lot better in person than it does on the model. You’ll want to buy your normal size so it fits correctly at the shoulders. I wore it to an event last week and received a ton of compliments.
  • Birkenstock ‘Arizona’ sandal in gold – I still think it’s crazy that Birkenstocks went from being reserved for the most “granola” of people to earning a spot in every fashion-forward person’s wardrobe. I’ve always liked the gold “Arizona” slide on other people, so I figured I’d give them a whirl this year given how often I wear my other Birkenstock sandals.

HOUSEHOLD

  • East Fork mugs – I love our new mugs! They’re beautiful and an absolute joy to use for our lattes in the morning.

Things I Bought & Loved This Month

WARDROBE
See this year’s sartorial additions here.

  • J.Crew vintage slim-straight jeans – I’m at a weird in-between size right now and my go-to jeans were a bit too loose, so I bought these for the time being. Honestly, I’m tired of raw hems, but they’re good enough for now. The best part of these is that they don’t stretch out much during the day.
  • Mansur Gavriel Checker Mini Volume Clutch – eBay find – I finally got my hands on my white whale of a purse! I’ve loved this Mansur Gavriel bag since it debuted in 2018, but I didn’t want to pay full price. I deeply regretted it for the past four years. Patience — and a saved eBay search — paid off this month and I welcomed the bag into my wardrobe.
  • Cole Haan Mary Jane flats (also available here) – These are the prettiest grownup take on Mary Jane flats! The elongated, squared-off toe is flattering and sophisticated, and they look lovely with both dresses and pants. However, the back is very stiff and cut into my ankle. I’ve since purchased padded insets to offer some cushioning.
  • J.Crew crystal and pearl drop earrings – The photos online don’t do these earrings justice. In fact, I passed them up online until I saw them in store. The sparkly crystals are a fun pairing for the real freshwater pearl drop. I bought them for around $16 on sale and that felt like a steal.

HOUSEHOLD

  • Target small faux shagreen box – I love the sage green hue of this storage box. It’s a great size to put keys and sunglasses on an entry table.

Things I Bought & Loved This Month

WARDROBE
See this year’s sartorial additions here.

  • J.Crew rollneck sweater in ‘Supersoft’ yarn – I have a few of J.Crew’s “Supersoft” turtleneck sweaters from a few years ago. I adore how cozy they are and added this chocolate-colored sweater to my wardrobe. It runs large, so go down at least one size. I bought a small and it’s still roomy.
  • J.Crew triple crystal drop earrings – Even if you don’t have a special occasion to wear these earrings, get them for your collection. They’re gorgeous in person and look a lot more expensive than they actually are. Plus, they’re not nearly as heavy as you’d expect for such a large bauble.
  • H&M balloon-sleeve crepe dress – Finally a dress that feels like my pre-pandemic self! The quality is what you’d expect for an H&M piece, but the pattern is just so cute. I recently wore it with black tights and flats. It doesn’t get as staticky as other polyester dresses, which is amazing when you have to wear a coat over it. It runs huge — as does everything at H&M these days. I ordered the XS and the small to try. They both fit with plenty of room, but the XS was too short.

HOUSEHOLD

  • Schoolhouse ‘Moraine’ wool throw – I’ve had my eye on this throw blanket for a year! Schoolhouse had a recent sale, giving me the motivation to finally purchase it. I love it so much. It’s so darn cozy and beautifully made. The heirloom-quality piece would be a wonderful holiday gift!
  • Crate & Barrel bistro bowls – We had been using these bowls that I bought at Anthropologie in white years ago. They were great when we bought them, but they started getting hairline cracks under the glaze shortly after. While they never did break, they looked terrible and I had been fed up with them for a few years now. I decided to replace them with these classic bowls from Crate & Barrel. They’re elegant and generously sized without being too large.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
