Weekend Links 01.12.18

Weekend Links:

  • A money strategy that makes more sense than a strict budget.
  • Anthro’s shoe selection is to die for this season. I’m crazy about these kitten heels and these tasseled pumps, but I’m absolutely head-over-heels (pun!) for these flats. That oversize bow just gets me!
  • Gucci is opening a restaurant.
  • If Emily Henderson says that wood paneling adds character to a home, then I’m even happier about our decision to paint it in our bedroom and office.
  • Nine ways to stay happy in winter.
  • A 12-hour closet makeover.
  • This should be your next TV show to binge.
  • I try not to get political in this space, but I did want you to be aware of the fact that you’ll need to double check your own paycheck for accuracy next month because of the hastily passed tax law.
  • Learn how England’s Crown Jewels were hidden during World War II.
  • Ikea’s latest ad is brilliant.

Style Steals Under $50:

  • A dose of color with bold earrings.
  • A simple crepe dress that comes in nine colors. (It’s a great backdrop for oversize jewelry!)
  • A dress with a fantastic mod print. (I’ll be obsessing over this until my shopping ban is over.)
  • A sweet blouse with bell sleeves and a feminine tie-front detail.
  • I didn’t want to overwhelm you with dresses this week, but I love this one, too!

Earlier This Week:

  • Style steals under $50 and under $100.
  • Nine swimsuits to consider if you have an upcoming beach getaway.
  • Now that the holiday decor is gone, freshen up your home with a new houseplant in a pretty planter.
  • This book makes coffee tables look better.

January No Shop Update: We’re a third of the way through January and I’m happy to report that I’m still holding steady with my spending freeze on unnecessary items. Spring items are becoming a bit more tempting, though, like the aforementioned shoes. But waiting a few more weeks will be good to determine whether or not they still capture my fancy. We did go out for drinks on Sunday and ordered Thai food for dinner, but as I mentioned, we had already figured we’d eat out two or three times this month instead of completely turning into hermits. And, I had my brakes replaced today, which is obviously a necessary expense. (I’m just a bit annoyed that this “cheap living” month became as pricey as it did!) The only thing I anticipate buying this weekend (groceries aside) is another gallon of paint to continue working on the trim in our house. There’s 30% off at Sherwin-Williams this month, so I’d rather get it now than wait until next month as possibly pay full price.

Weekend Reading 12.29.17

There are two more days left of 2017 and I can’t wait to bid adieu to the year. Sure, there were some fantastic moments that I’ll cherish when I look back at 2017, namely buying our first home, visiting New Orleans (even if we were both sick the entire time), and being featured as one of the city’s most stylish in Madison Magazine. However, 2017 wasn’t one of my favorite years. And judging from my Twitter feed, many of you seem to be in the same boat. So, let’s raise a glass this weekend to welcome 2018 with open, optimistic arms!

Weekend Reading:

  • I love Kirsten’s bedroom makeover.
  • One of the ways we’re saving money is by having date nights at home where we try new recipes. Kimchi udon with scallions is on deck this weekend.
  • Vogue’s best backstage moments of 2017.
  • Eleven champagne cocktails for NYE.
  • I’m considering this simple light fixture for our office. The price is right at just $99, too!
  • The fashion trends you’ll be wearing in 2018.
  • I tend to create in depth itineraries for each trip we take. This is a good reminder to plan a bit less in advance.
  • Thanks to Ella Hansen, Danish Modernism’s most iconic designs were saved.
  • The New York Times recaps a year of style through photographs.
  • Twenty-five New Year’s traditions around the world.

Five Under $50:

  • The perfect t-shirt to wear on NYE.
  • A polka dot blouse.
  • If you love Bauble Bar’s ‘Criselda’ drop earrings, snag this set ASAP. The set includes the blue and pink version for just $28. Even if you don’t like one of the colors, it’s still cheaper than buying them individually.
  • A pretty floral mini dress. (It will look good with tights, too!)
  • Mod flower earrings.

Earlier This Week:

  • Wishing you a very merry Christmas.
  • I’m all about the most colorful ornaments.
  • #2017BestNine
  • My favorite looks of the year.
  • The last wardrobe update of 2017.

Weekend Reading 12.23.17

It’s here! Christmas weekend is here! We have last minute prep work and cleaning to tackle this morning before we host Dave’s parents, sister, and brother-in-law today, but we have holiday records on the turntable and plenty of sugary treats to keep us going! Later this weekend, we’ll head up north to visit my parents for Christmas where it promises to be a winter wonderland with plenty of snow. If you celebrate, I hope you have the happiest of holidays! And if not, I hope you have a relaxing and fun weekend, too!

Weekend Reading:

  • One of my coworkers brought in an orange cranberry bread this week. It was amazing and it’d be perfect for Christmas morning. The recipe looks similar to this one.
  • Twenty-six of the safest cities for solo female travelers.
  • Are you hosting New Year’s Eve? You need to add this punch bowl/wine chiller to your arsenal. It’s stunning, isn’t it?
  • We watched A Christmas Prince at the recommendation of my coworker for an awful(ly amazing) Hallmark-esque holiday movie. It’s worth the watch for the best-worst moments alone.
  • The challenges faced by fine jewelers as customers move toward fashion-forward pieces.
  • We’ll be spinning all of our Christmas albums today! If you’re not as well prepared with your musical selections, try Tory Burch’s playlist.
  • I bought this dress and it’s so flattering! I also ordered this one to try. (I really hope it fits. I have two cocktail events in February and I’d love to wear it!)
  • A great reminder to know your worth.
  • Did you know that Iceland has a horrifying Christmas witch?
  • Six things to do on Sunday to prep for the week.

Five Under $50:

  • How cute are these blue and white striped sneakers? Buy them now and tuck them away for spring.
  • Cozy up with a faux fur throw.
  • An extra 20% off sale prices with code EXTRA20 brings these beauties down to $47.20.
  • This sweater looks perfect for the coldest days in January.
  • A ladylike skirt.

Earlier This Week:

  • The easiest way to give back this holiday.
  • A simple last-minute gift that you can still pull off today.

Weekend Reading 12.01.17

And just like that, it’s December! Dave and I are off to Chicago this weekend for the annual Christkindlmarket, which has become our tradition over the past four years to kick off the holiday season. There’s nothing like a warm mug of mulled wine to get you in the holiday spirit, and to encourage you to buy more ornaments that you possibly need! In addition to soaking in the festive atmosphere and tackling some holiday shopping, we have dinner reservations at The Publican (we’ve been meaning to go for years) and are planning to explore Logan Square during their holiday festivities on Saturday. I have to admit that I’m also pretty jazzed that the forecast puts the days’ high temperatures in the low 50s. Sure, brisk weather and snow flurries would add to the holiday scene, but this is the first year I won’t have to bundle up with multiple layers!

Weekend Reading:

  • We’re hoping to make a trip to Iceland work next year, and these gorgeously designed Airbnb rentals would make for incredible places to stay!
  • The architectural impact an arch can have in your home’s design.
  • Grace shares her favorite podcasts. I can vouch for The Daily!
  • New Orleans’ Cafe du Monde is one of the most Instagrammed restaurants of 2017. #Guilty
  • The best Ikea news from 2017.
  • How to fix a broken makeup powder or palette.
  • The IRL version of Instagrammers’ homes.
  • Nike’s failed attempt to resurrect its vintage Cortez-style shoe and challenge Adidas’ dominance of the old-school market.
  • There’s a beer named after Queen Bey.
  • Best books to read this winter.

Five Under $50:

  • Embroidered mules for $35. They’re best in black.
  • A crisp white blouse is a wardrobe staple. I love the loose silhouette of this one that would look great untucked with a pair of jeans.
  • These earrings are incredible, aren’t they? Plus you can save 25% with code GIFT25.
  • Earmuffs with a plaid headband.
  • A sweatshirt that’s more fun than your standard athleisure gear.

Earlier This Week:

  • The dress I’m obsessed with.
  • November’s sartorial confessions.

Weekend Reading 11.25.17

And just like that, the holiday season is in full swing! We drove back from my parents’ house yesterday and as much as I wanted to do Black Friday justice when we got home, I didn’t get any holiday shopping done other than a few things for myself: a sculptural watering carafe, four smokey glass cordial glasses, and a flirty black skirt. I’m hoping that I can find a few gifts today during the Small Business Saturday festivities downtown. And then, we’d like to buy our Christmas tree! I can’t wait to cozy in with spiked eggnog and a holiday record as we decorate the tree.

Weekend Reading:

  • Tips to create the perfect cheeseboard.
  • Combat chapped lips with a gentle exfoliant.
  • I’m excited to see the new film adaptation of the Murder on the Orient Express and loved reading this piece on Agatha Christie’s likely inspiration for the book.
  • Do we need to let traditional retail die in order to save the industry?
  • Small boutiques that have great online shops.
  • This handpainted ornament is a gorgeous gift to hand on hand for unexpected holiday gifting. (This keyring is a great alternative for guys.)
  • Tips on lighting your Christmas tree. (Although, I’ve never started stringing lights from the bottom. You?)
  • The origins and escalation of the holiday shopping season.
  • A look at Chanel muses throughout the years.
  • Twenty-three ways to use up all of your Thanksgiving leftovers.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
