We’re looking at going to Chicago this weekend for the Christkindlmarket and, judging by this week’s colorful Covetable post, my mood is becoming more cheerful now that the holidays are right around the corner. I’d love to prance through the season is those glittery Kate Spade pumps, but my pocketbook would prefer that I opt for the coordinating polish instead!

I did splurge on the Cameo dress, which is backordered until December. I fell in love with it on Damsel in Dior back in September and was thrilled to see it part of Piperlime’s new arrivals. I used a 25% discount and a few reward coupons to bring the price down to the $130 mark. Let’s just hope that it fits!

I’m obsessing over this bag, which shares my name. Must be fate! Really, though, I like it enough to make it my Tax Return Splurge this year if it’s still available in February (and if the price goes down a bit).

Refinery by Gerard Yosca

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]F[/dropcap]ew things are more exciting than new jewelry, especially when those gems come in the form of hammered metal with thoughtfully placed rhinestones, as in the case of Gerard Yosca’s newest collection. Appropriately named “Refinery” the pieces are a bit more understated than seasons past, but they’re no less eye catching. I could go on and on about the collection, but I think you’ll agree that it’s more meaningful to hear from Gerard himself about his inspiration, his thoughts on the statement piece and, for fun, what’s on his holiday wish list.

WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION BEHIND REFINERY?
Time for a fashion reboot. Dress a little more simply and grownup. I wanted a collection that reflected a taste for quality. And, I’m still feeling a ’70s jet setter influence.

[spacer]

WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE TRAJECTORY OF THE STATEMENT PIECE?
If everyone wears a big statement piece, all we see is noise. I love when someone stands out by dressing less obviously. Everything we say doesn’t require “!!!!!”. Save them for when you mean it. The big earring just feels particularly fresh right now.

[spacer]

HOW IS THE CHANGE IN SCALE REFLECTED IN THESE PIECES?
Most of the collection is really a lot smaller than a year ago! And I’ve used repetition of simple geometric shapes to make the pieces easy on the eyes.

FOR SOMEONE KNOWN FOR COLOR, WHY ALL METAL?
I thought I might be able to create pieces that would be grab and go if they were easier. I created the texture by hammering the metal with a ball tip I had filed down. Here, the texture really creates the interest that color would normally do.

[spacer]

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WINTER LOOK?
Cleaned up and polished as always, but for heaven’s sake, keep your sense of humor! Wear that scarf with jingle bells or a silly hat. We want a mix of sophistication and childlike joy.

[spacer]

WHAT IS ON YOUR HOLIDAY WISH LIST?
Time to really focus on hauling out all of the vintage Christmas decorations to deck the house.

Bauble of the Week

I clicked over to Lulu Frost this weekend to drool over the code ring I’ve been obsessed with this year and I was happily distracted by the gorgeous pieces Lisa Salzer created for her resort collection. I want everything, starting with this porcelain-like pair of earrings. I grew up in a Victorian house and the casting on the earrings reminds me of the intricate embossed designs on the home’s radiators.

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]P [/dropcap]earls may have stole the show this year, but I’m in the mood for something more opulent now that the holidays are fast approaching. Forget glitzy rhinestone layers and reach for this season’s most luxurious trend: the tassel. Whether you opt for a budget-friendly bauble or splurge on this asymmetrical beauty, you’re sure to make a statement.

Beetle Mania

BeetlePin-1

[dropcap custom_class=”normal”]I[/dropcap]f you’ve been a longtime reader of my blog, you’ll remember how giddy I was to acquire this piece from the Coach x Tony Duquette collection. The lapis and malachite stick pin still remains a favorite in my jewelry box. I don’t wear it often, but that might have to change now that I’ve scored this beetle-print shirt by Tory Burch. It was hanging by its lonesome at Nordstrom Rack today and I was all too willing to bring it home to its sartorial sole mate.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
