Weekend Links 02.02.18

Today marks seven years that Dave and I have been together! We’re heading to Milwaukee this weekend for a little getaway to mark the occasion where we’ll be hunting for vintage furniture, scouring record stores to add to our vinyl collection, wandering around the Third Ward, experiencing the ice bars, and meeting up with friends at Mitten Fest. In other news, we booked a trip to Austin for my 35th birthday at the end of May! If you have any recommendations, let me know!

Weekend Links:

  • Over five years, a waiter collected 8,000 origami sculptures left by customers.
  • What you need to know when buying furniture.
  • Ten anniversaries worth traveling for.
  • How cute is this planter?
  • All of the 2018 Super Bowl ads that have been released thus far.
  • Thoughts on how to save shopping malls.
  • Does data science work when it comes to dating?
  • Try these breathing techniques the next time you’re feeling overwhelmed.
  • The science of swearing.
  • There’s a ceiling fan at the top of our stairs and it’s pretty much the stupidest place for one. We’re likely going to replace it with this beauty.
  • Menswear revenue is expected to outpace the womenswear market.

Finds Under $50:

  • Vintage-inspired glasses to update your home bar.
  • A sweet gingham dress.
  • Pick your favorite shade of Pantone’s Color of the Year for your next manicure.
  • A romantic and flattering wrap dress.
  • A pair of geometric statement earrings.

Earlier This Week:

  • Reflecting on a month of [almost] no shopping.
  • The sunglasses in this week’s “The Coveted” are ridiculous in a really fun way, and they’re only $16.
  • I lost four followers on Bloglovin’ after posting this outfit. Meh. I like the top! 😉
  • I can’t resist a selfie when there’s a sunburst mirror around.
  • This is why I can’t always hate on winter in Wisconsin.

Reflecting on a Month of [Almost] No Shopping

February 1, 2018 by jessica 5 Comments

J.Crew Majesty Peacoat

At the beginning of January, I was reeling from an expensive December with holiday and car-related spending. I needed a month to take a step back and get my financial act together before heading into the rest of the year. It was a lofty challenge and I wasn’t entirely successful at curbing unnecessary purchases, falling victim to this shirt and a vase. Yet, spending just $35 on these things was still a pretty big financial win for me and I was able to get my budget back on track. I wrote about my spending freeze strategies at the beginning of the month, and the one that helped the most was wish listing everything. It’s really shocking to see how many things lose their luster after sitting on a Pinterest board for a few weeks. (Granted, this only works if you’re willing to add it to your list and then try to forget about it the rest of the month. It’ll be much harder if you keep going back to daydream about it.) Below, I’ve listed the things I thought I’d buy once February rolled around and where those things now stand.

No longer want:

  • Jeffrey Campbell ‘Irina’ flats – I spotted the black version while I was mindlessly scrolling through Instagram and thought they were ridiculous, but in a really fun way that would play nicely off of a black dress. Now I just find them ridiculous in a juvenile way that doesn’t work with my wardrobe or my aesthetic.
  • Zara mini frilled dress – I really wanted this at the beginning of the month, but I’m glad I held out. I’m tired of dark floral now that spring is nearly here.
  • Madewell t-shirt – As cute as this one is, I realized that I’m just not one to wear t-shirts regularly enough to add this to my collection.
  • Cult Gaia ‘Eva’ earrings – These seem expensive for what they are. I love the design, though.
  • Zara mini bucket bag – Why spend money on a subpar purse when I’m saving up for the Gucci bag of my dreams?
  • Sam Edelman ‘Lior’ loafer in black – These had been on my wish list for awhile, but after the sleek pointy-toe Madewell loafers came out (listed below), I no longer want this pair.
  • David Yurman ring – I’ve had this on my wish list for a couple of years now. However, this month I realized that I just don’t want to save up for it and would rather spend my money on other things. I have a gold-plated Monica Vinader ring that I wear every day and I’d rather buy a no-name real gold band to replace it with than go with the David Yurman ring.

On the fence:

  • LOFT shimmer tile ruffle blouse – I need to see this in person. It’ll either be adorable with jeans and I’ll reach for it over and over again on nothing-to-wear days, or it’ll be too voluminous and look sloppy. I don’t really need more bulk on my frame. Has anyone tried it?
  • Cult Gaia mini ‘Cupola’ bag – Do I really need this when I already have the Ark bag? Plus, it’s hard to spend that much when I paid less than $50 for my large Ark bag before the brand became popular.

Still love:

  • Line & Dot ‘Adelene’ dress – Alright, I have to confess that I ordered this last night. I have another dress from Line & Dot that I’ve worn almost weekly for three summers now, and I still love it as much as I did the first time I put it on. This is such a pretty option for spring. Plus, you know how much I love loose mini dresses.
  • Leigh racerback shift dress – I’m really eager to try this on in person. It seems like a versatile option that can go from work to weekend with ease.
  • Gap skinny black jeans – Every few weeks I find myself wishing I owned a pair of black jeans. It’s probably time to just try a pair in person and see how I feel about them.
  • Madewell ‘Francis’ loafer – I have a pair of brown Madewell loafers and they’re incredibly comfortable. I’m hoping this pair will be a good option for our trip to London when I want something nicer looking than a pair of sneakers.
  • Paravel crossbody capsule bag – I’m sure I’ll own this within the next few months. It’s been on my wish list since last summer and my crush on it hasn’t waned, especially given how much I love the quality of the brand’s backpack.
  • Gucci small ‘Marmont’ bag in black – Obviously this is still on my wish list. I’ve been putting aside $25 per paycheck over the last year, along with blog revenue that doesn’t get earmarked for something else. I’m $33 away. OMG.

So, what did I learn?

  • First things first: I’m going to be much better about curbing impulse spending, and not fall victim to sales and free shipping offers. Those are by far my Achilles’ heel. I always tell myself that I can return the item if I’m not crazy about it, but I’m usually too enamored once I try it on at home.
  • There are a lot of pieces I added to my wish list and then cast aside! I’m going to continue wish listing items to make sure they’re things I actually want a month later. I’m thinking of giving myself a two- to four-week waiting period between the initial spark and finally pulling the trigger. That should be plenty of time to see if something falls into the “meh” category after the first rush of excitement wears off.
  • I found myself becoming much better at creating lists of the holes in my wardrobe, as evidenced by the third list above. Many of those items are things that I’ve wanted for awhile, but they took a backseat to more exciting purchases. I’d like to prioritize those items to mix into my existing wardrobe.
  • High quality, classic styles capture my fancy for much longer than trendy pieces do, and I’m a sucker for a short dress. Instead of throwing money at trends or trying something different, it’s better for me to put my money toward the things that I actually love and wear frequently.

Your turn!
Did you try something similar this month? Have you ever tried a no-shopping challenge? How did it go? What lessons did you learn?

Weekend Links 01.28.18

I didn’t expect to take almost a week-long hiatus from the blog, but the days got away from me! Like many of you, I lose a lot of ambition in the winter when it’s dreary outside, and then I’m too eager to relish the nicer days that I let the blog take a backseat. Sometimes those breaks are nice, though, and offer a chance to come back to things with a fresh perspective.

One thing I wanted to share before we get to the best finds around the ‘net is the Madison Reading Project’s READ(y) to Wear fundraiser that’s happening on Feb. 10. (Think of it as an evening devoted to a Project Runway-inspired unconventional challenge with fashion created from paper.) I was selected to be a judge this year, so if you’re in the Madison area, this is your opportunity to see me live out my fantasy of being Nina García. Proceeds from the evening go toward literacy programs and enable Madison Reading Project to purchase books for the children in their partnering programs.

Weekend Links:

  • Joy Cho’s luggage collaboration with Calpak is so bright and cheerful!
  • A look at some of the trends fashion editors are giving up in 2018.
  • I’m all about houseplants lately. Here’s a roundup of some of the year’s chicest plants.
  • This kitchen remodel is gorgeous.
  • The 50 best fashion tips of all time.
  • How to freestyle tomato sauce.
  • I wish I had a place for this lamp.
  • Highlights from the couture jewelry presentations.
  • Nine decor items that will elevate your home.

Finds Under $50:

  • Black pointy mules.
  • An airy blouse.
  • A cross-body bag with a trendy handle.
  • A simple black shift dress.
  • Eye-catching earrings.

Earlier This Week:

  • Images of our house’s exterior over the past 10 years as seen on Google Maps.
  • A peek into our living room progress. (I shared one image on Instagram yesterday, but you’ll find more pics here.)
  • Another roundup of neutrals for spring.

January No Shop Update: I shouldn’t have gone to Target last week when I was feeling dissatisfied with our living room because a walk through the Project 62 aisle had me tucking this vase between the La Croix and cat litter. The quality of the vase is great and looks like it was purchased from an artisan, but for an insanely affordable price of $13. So as far as unnecessary purchases go, I’ll be finishing up the month with the vase and this shirt for a total of $35. It could have been a lot worse and I’ll share some of my thoughts on the month later this week.

Weekend Links 01.20.18

Man, January is kicking my butt. First I had car issues with the tires I recently had replaced (they wouldn’t hold air), I needed my brakes replaced, Dave’s grandfather passed away (at the very impressive age of 95!), and our furnace went out Tuesday night. We opted to wait until morning to have it fixed despite the overnight low of three degrees to save on after-hours fees. So, we bundled up, added more blankets to the bed, wished we had a space heater, and let water run overnight so our pipes didn’t freeze. (This is homeownership, folks!) The house was a brisk 50 degrees when we woke up (down from 65 when we turned in for the night), which isn’t terrible and probably speaks highly of the insulation in the place. It was still awfully cold, though, and a steamy shower was such a treat in the morning. I felt bad for Bacon who kept burrowing under piles of blankets to keep warm until the repair guy arrived in the afternoon. Anyway, that’s enough complaining! We had the funeral yesterday morning, a Destroyer concert last night (it’s Dave’s favorite band and I gave him tickets for Christmas), and absolutely no plans the rest of the weekend.

Weekend Links:

  • Victoria’s accidental experiment with minimalism is such a great reminder that we don’t actually need (or later want) many of the items we covet. I’ve been saving all of my possible purchases to a private Pinterest board, but I love the idea of keeping a list that doesn’t have photos included.
  • I’m obsessed with this cuff bracelet.
  • Who knew that Lowe’s could turn into a glamorous photo location?
  • A gorgeous photo essay offers a peek into one of America’s last pencil factories.
  • It probably comes as no surprise that Sketch is on my must-do list for London. I loved Nicole’s photos and tips for snagging that coveted reservation.
  • Instagram’s algorithm is such a mess. Here are the changes on the horizon.
  • Clare V. added her signature prints to wallpaper. I’ve tried to convince Dave we should put this one in the half bath off of our kitchen.
  • Creamy kimchi dip sounds amazing.
  • You don’t have to spend a fortune for large-scale artwork.
  • I came across a gorgeous matte black ceramic vase on Etsy. Isn’t it striking?

Style Steals Under $50:

  • If you’re heading someplace warm, consider this dress. The copper colorway would look gorgeous with a woven bag and nude sandals.
  • I, ahem, “love” this t-shirt.
  • Use code COZY to take 50% off this cute swing dress.
  • Add a burst of color to your winter wardrobe with this sweater. The green one is my favorite.
  • Slip’s eyemask gets a flirty update in time for Valentine’s Day.

Earlier This Week:

  • Debuting my Paravel backpack.
  • Coveting neutral colors.
  • Baubles on a budget.

January No Shop Update:  The furnace was kind of the last straw and sent my stress levels through the roof, so perhaps it was no coincidence that this week I caved and made an unnecessary purchase. At 50% off and a rare free shipping offer from LOFT, this shirt was too tempting to pass up without trying it on. I can’t tell you how guilty I felt after I placed the order and I figured I could always return it and no harm done. And then it arrived. I’m so freaking in love with it. It’s cute tucked into an a-line skirt. I love it with jeans and my favorite red flats. And it’s adorable underneath a sleeveless crewneck dress. I guess as far as impulse purchases go, $22 isn’t terrible after months of spending 10 times that on unnecessary things. Plus, at least it wasn’t an expensive foray into the bell-sleeve trend if I don’t end up wearing it past spring. Anyway, I’m a little disappointed that I wasn’t able to hold out another 11 days until the end of the month, but I’m not going to beat myself up over it as long as it’s the only thing that makes its way into my closet this January!

Weekend Reading 01.05.18

Happy first weekend of the new year! I hope your 2018 is off to a great start, despite the bone-chilling weather sweeping the nation. We have one more holiday gathering today with my dad’s side of the family and then we can finally leave Christmas (and all of those sweets) in the past. Other than that, our weekend should be fairly relaxed. I want to finish up painting the doorframe and closet trim in our office, and we’re hoping to get out for a long walk on Sunday. The temperature is expected to reach the mid-30s, which is 40 degrees warmer than it has been. We can’t miss out on that heat wave!

Weekend Links:

  • Five easy financial goals to accomplish this year.
  • Why saying “um” isn’t such a bad thing.
  • Madewell’s newest loafer silhouette is gorgeous. I’ll likely purchase a pair in black after my no-shop month is up. Hopefully they’re just as comfortable as these. I’d love a pair of black loafers to bring to London with me.
  • I joke that my dream job is to have been a jewel thief, but I don’t think I could ever pull off something as stealthy as this heist in Venice a few days ago.
  • How Instagram-famous handbag companies like Cult Gaia created a new formula for success.
  • I didn’t think I could love an umbrella stand.
  • Kick off the new year on a healthier foot with Bon Appetit’s “Feel Good Food Plan.” The recipes look incredible and a lot more satisfying than some of the dietary restrictions bloggers put themselves through at the beginning of a new year!
  • Tips to organize your kitchen this season.
  • Did you know that Netflix is filming an updated version of Sabrina the Teenage Witch? Can’t. Wait.
  • Closet organization tips for the new year. I’m definitely purchasing some sweater boxes to store knitwear in the off season.

Style Steals Under $50:

  • The pearl detail on the sleeves of this blouse is so pretty.
  • I usually think that spending $40 on a t-shirt is ridiculous, but I can’t stop thinking about this one after seeing it in person.
  • A gingham wrap dress is adorable for spring.
  • A striped bell-sleeve sweater.
  • Will someone please try this printed dress and let me know if it’s as great as I hope it is?
  • Refresh your bathroom with a stylish new bathmat. (I always forget about H&M for housewares.)

Earlier This Week:

  • My 2018 goals.
  • A springlike wish list.
  • Seven strategies to get through a spending freeze.

January No Shop Update: The first week of my no shopping month wasn’t that difficult. I didn’t leave the house on Jan. 1 and I worked at home on Jan. 2, so I wasn’t tempted by impulse purchases and dining out. I had already purchased groceries for the week’s dinners and work lunches, so we were all squared away there. But, I did buy two non-essential things: a yoga mat and a latte from Starbucks. I’m embarrassed to admit that Tuesday was the first time I’ve exercised since moving in, and I didn’t realize how much wood floors would hurt during a work out! I thought about using a towel for the month so that I could adhere to my self-imposed shopping ban until February rolled around. Dave correctly reminded me that health is essential and I shouldn’t feel guilty about spending $20 to make myself more likely to continue exercising this month. And that latte? I was going stir crazy at work on Thursday and needed to get out in the middle of the afternoon to get fresh air. Had it not been below zero degrees, a walk would have sufficed. Twenty-five days left to go!

I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view.
