Wardrobe Update: December 2017

December 28, 2017 by jessica 1 Comment

Jenny Bird Ziggy Drop Earrings

I never intend to spend quite so much on myself in December, especially since it’s such an expensive month to begin with, but I can’t resist adding a few new things to my collection to round out the year. My favorite purchase of the month is one I’ve had my eye on for awhile: this Paravel backpack. I had originally been crushing on the capsule bag, but the size wasn’t practical for actually traveling with it. Finally splurging on a pricier item and being so incredibly thrilled with it is a good reminder to step back and carefully plan future purchases. I’ll talk about this more in my upcoming New Year’s goals post, but I’m working to be more mindful of purchases in the new year — and I’m actually kicking things off by not buying anything at all in January. I don’t want to call it a “shopping ban” and attach any negativity to it. It’s more of a reset button to allow myself time to sift through my collection and figure out what I actually need.

Below, you’ll see what I snagged this month before my self-imposed challenge. I also received a few sartorial pieces from Dave this Christmas: feathery earrings, these Jenny Bird stunners, and a black sweater.

Wardrobe Update December 2017 :: Bedknobs & Baubles

PURCHASED
See all of this year’s sartorial additions here.

  • Madewell ‘Woodside’ pullover sweater in heather rust – This sweater is ridiculously cozy. I’ve barely wanted to take it off since I received it. Admittedly, the boxy shape isn’t the most flattering, but I don’t care. It’s warm and perfect for weekend lounging. Go down a size.
  • Madewell long-sleeve poppy dress in peacock feathers – The shape of this dress is exactly what I need more of in my wardrobe with its flattering v-neckline, cinched waist, and swingy skirt. It runs true to size.
  • Kate Spade linear drop earrings in gold (smaller version) –  I bought these at the Kate Spade boutique in Chicago earlier this month and have worn them almost every day since. They’re large, but surprisingly versatile.
  • Paravel 3-in-1 motorist backpack in black – I still can’t believe I bought this! I had been eyeing it up for months because it looks perfect for travel. I can’t tell you how annoyed I get by shoving my camera into a cross-body purse for our adventures. It doesn’t always fit well and the shoulder strain starts to bother me after a few days of lugging it around. This is going to be so perfect for our trip to London in the spring. There’s more than enough room for the camera, wallet, and any other treasures we collect during the day. I love that it transforms into a shoulder bag, which will be great for visiting museums that don’t allow backpacks. I’ll do a full review in a dedicated post soon.

DIDN’T WORK OUT
Things I tried and didn’t love.

  • Madewell ruffle-tier cami dress – It fit everywhere but the very top of the bust. It would be way too large if I went up a size. It’s really cute, though!
  • Madewell ruffle-edge skirt in peacock feathers – I end up hating every elastic-waist skirt I try because it bunches oddly. I think it’s time to stop buying them.
  • Cece crepe flounce skirt – I’m on the lookout for a new black skirt, but I hated that this one didn’t flare out right at the waistband. The pleats are stitched down for the first couple of inches making it fit snugly across my midsection. Pass.

DAYDREAMING ABOUT
The items I just might add to my wardrobe next month.

  • I still need to get my black flats resoled.

Weekend Reading

December 23, 2017 by jessica Leave a Comment

Weekend Reading 12.23.17

It’s here! Christmas weekend is here! We have last minute prep work and cleaning to tackle this morning before we host Dave’s parents, sister, and brother-in-law today, but we have holiday records on the turntable and plenty of sugary treats to keep us going! Later this weekend, we’ll head up north to visit my parents for Christmas where it promises to be a winter wonderland with plenty of snow. If you celebrate, I hope you have the happiest of holidays! And if not, I hope you have a relaxing and fun weekend, too!

Weekend Reading:

  • One of my coworkers brought in an orange cranberry bread this week. It was amazing and it’d be perfect for Christmas morning. The recipe looks similar to this one.
  • Twenty-six of the safest cities for solo female travelers.
  • Are you hosting New Year’s Eve? You need to add this punch bowl/wine chiller to your arsenal. It’s stunning, isn’t it?
  • We watched A Christmas Prince at the recommendation of my coworker for an awful(ly amazing) Hallmark-esque holiday movie. It’s worth the watch for the best-worst moments alone.
  • The challenges faced by fine jewelers as customers move toward fashion-forward pieces.
  • We’ll be spinning all of our Christmas albums today! If you’re not as well prepared with your musical selections, try Tory Burch’s playlist.
  • I bought this dress and it’s so flattering! I also ordered this one to try. (I really hope it fits. I have two cocktail events in February and I’d love to wear it!)
  • A great reminder to know your worth.
  • Did you know that Iceland has a horrifying Christmas witch?
  • Six things to do on Sunday to prep for the week.

Five Under $50:

  • How cute are these blue and white striped sneakers? Buy them now and tuck them away for spring.
  • Cozy up with a faux fur throw.
  • An extra 20% off sale prices with code EXTRA20 brings these beauties down to $47.20.
  • This sweater looks perfect for the coldest days in January.
  • A ladylike skirt.

Earlier This Week:

  • The easiest way to give back this holiday.
  • A simple last-minute gift that you can still pull off today.

Inexpensive Last-Minute Holiday Gift

December 19, 2017 by jessica 2 Comments

Last-Minute Holiday Gift: Mini Champagne

I can barely believe we’re in the holiday home stretch with just six days to go until Christmas! I wrapped up my shopping on Saturday, but it feels like there’s always someone I neglected to shop for and with time running out to meet shipping deadlines, I need an easy go-to gift that I can put together in just a few minutes. Behold: the festive booze. I’m actually giving these mini bottles of bubbly to my coworkers today and thought the idea was worth sharing if you have any last-minute gift exchanges to partake in. (If you like the recipient enough, spring for a full-size bottle.)

Everything you need (alcohol excluded) is available on Amazon Prime if you’re not keen on going to the store the week before Christmas:

  • Curling Ribbon
  • Gift Tags (I bought these.)
  • Stir Sticks
  • Mini Bottles of Champagne (Korbel looks just like the champagne emoji, which is a bonus!)

Write a cheerful message, add plenty of ribbon, and tuck in the stir sticks. Ta da! An Instagram-worthy gift that cost a few bucks.

Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until la Our guest room wasn’t a design priority until late last year when we finally bought a bed, mattress, and a set of sheets. We used some of our own extra bedding (tucking in the generous overhang of our king blankets under the queen-sized mattress) and old bedside lamps from our bedroom: functional, but not quite the charming space I’d envisioned.

That started to change when I purchased the Popcorn Grid Coverlet from Schoolhouse — an item I’d been eyeing for years — plus some graphic floral pillows. Then came a bright blue round cushion and the sweetest Teig lamp, both generously gifted by Schoolhouse, and the room finally started to come together. Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hi Growing up in northern Wisconsin, lilacs always hit peak bloom right around my birthday on May 30. My mom would fill a large crystal vase with fresh-cut stems, and their scent would waft through the house.

Now that I live a few hours south and lilac season wraps up earlier, the blooms actually mark the start of my birthday month.

I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog I’m challenging myself to get through a backlog of travel photos before we book our next trip. First up, photos of the gothic York Minster. I’m not religious in the slightest but I can’t resist stunning architecture and the opportunity to climb hundreds of cathedral stairs for a city view. This one only had a single rest stop about halfway up the flight of 275 steps for a closeup view of the flying buttresses — and a waiver you had to sign before your ascent to promise you’re healthy enough to make it.
